On the economical side, the benefits of FDI outweighs the negatives, but on the social side, things might be complicated. In this paper, I would like to talk about the FDI activities beginning in the Ottoman era, continuing with the early Turkish republic, and its effects on the economic and social development of late Ottoman and early Turkish republic. In that sense, I think it is fair to assume the late Ottoman empire as a country in decline, both economic and social wise, whereas we can think of the new Turkish republic as an emerging economy and a country who is trying to westernize it’s social and economic outlook.

OPDA, while easing the flow of FDI to the empire has lead to development and prosperity in the inner regions due to its effect on the establishment on the railway network, it also lead to increasing borrowing from foreign powers and ultimately to the demise of the Ottoman economy. The second institution, which I believe had an impact on the growth and development of the empire, is the Sublime Porte, which was a central figure on how the empire was run by the sultanate, but also has seen important reforms in the 19th century.

Institutional Theories of organizations give a rather complex understanding of the organizations ... more Institutional Theories of organizations give a rather complex understanding of the organizations in the modern era. Compared to other theories, they are more strictly based in theory, and thus more difficult to apply to the practical world. “Institutional theory is inherently difficult to explicate, because it taps taken-for-granted assumptions at the core of social action.” (Zucker, 1987) Institutional theories of organizations deal with the external and internal pressures that shape the organization. As mentioned, these influences, which are normative in nature, may be external, such as the state, or internal, such as structure. In this paper, I try to look at the sources of institutionalization, and why certain elements of the external and internal environments cause such pressures on organizations. On the other hand, I try to tie the sources of institutionalization to the degree of institutionalization of the organization, thus examining certain actions and strategies of organizations in order to survive.

The first MANOVA was conducted on a sample of 13,000 managers from 142 organizations in the United States. The second MANOVA measured the nestion organizations within industries. The results of these tests are discussed below. When talking about a complex analysis like MANOVA, we should discuss the sample of the analysis first. The authors required personality data from " multiple members of multiple organizations " They achieved this by gathering a sample of 12,739 managers from 142 organizations. When we look at the analysis that the authors have conducted, we see that they have conducted a MANOVA " using organizational membership as the categorical independent variable and the four continous MBTI dimensions as dependent variables. " The first MANOVA was conducted in order to " examine the degree to which organizations differ with respect to the personality characteristics of the managers in them " The second MANOVA was a factorial one, with industries and organizations nested within industries as independent variables. Resultwise, the authors found that " there was a significant main effect in the one-way MANOVA for organization membership on the four MBTI dimensions " The interpretation suggests that organizations differ from one another by the personality characteristics of their members. For the second MANOVA, the results show significant industry effect. As a result, we could say that the experiments support the hypothesis that organizations are very equally distributed according to the managers within them.

The authors claim that in order to effectively measure an organization's performance, it is essential to capture the perception of the employees within the criteria: Efficiency, quality, quality of life, quality of work life, productivity and profitability. They measured this perception using the Structural Equation Modeling approach. The study was conducted in a line pipe manufacturing firm in India. " The basic goal of Structural Equation Modelling is to provide a quantitative test of a theoretical model that is hypothesized by the researcher and in order to fulfill its goal, it uses different types of models to depict the relationship among the observed variables " (Schumacher and Lomax, 2010) The items in the survey were selected on the basis of a prior research and were distributed to 30 employees. The questionnaire included " 28 items under five constructs " A 5 point Likert scale was used ranging from 1-Strongly Disagree to 5-Strongly Agree. The survey carried out 200 responses. The results show that one of the hypothesis presented by the authors is not supported.

The main tested hypothesis is that collectivistic beliefs influence the incident of social loafing. In the study, 48 managerial trainees from the US and China worked under conditions of low or high accountability and responsibility. A regression analysis was then made on the results. In this paper, a hierarchical, moderated regression analysis was conducted on performance. The predictor variables in this case were Step One: " Shared Responsibility, Accountability and Collectivism " Step 2: SR X ACC, SR X COLL and ACC X COLL, Step 3: SR X ACC X COLL and Step 4: Country. On Table 3, we see that the hypothesized interaction of shared responsibility and accountability with collectivism. It is fair to say that in order to better understand the interaction, " scores for collectivism were dichotomized based on a median split and two additional analyses were conducted " The authors hypothesized that interaction would occur for shared responsibility and accountability for the individualistic sample, and the results support their hypothesis. In the figures, we can see that highly individualistic people performed poorest under high responsibility and low accountability situations whereas collectivistic people didn't show this kind of tendency and performed better under shared responsibility regardless of accountability. Also as a result, it is supported that collective Americans didn't exhibit social loafing while individualistic Chinese people did exhibit social loafing. Some main and two way effects were also observed: The beta for shared responsibility in the collectivistic group shown different results as there is a negative beta for the individualistic sample. When looked at the general regression, we see that it demonstrates an interaction of accountability and collectivism

They base their theory on 2 well-established prior theories: Technology-organization-environment framework and institutional theory. They tested their hypothesis with data collected from 2500 largest companies operating in Portugal. The first methodological test that the authors ran on the data was a t-test for equality, which provided evidence that: " EPS adoption is positively and significantly related to: 1. Firm size 2. Technology competence 3. The perception companies have about the EPS success of their competitors 4. The extent of adoption among competitors 5. The readiness of the trading partners to perform electronic transactions The paper inclines towards interpreting the results of the regression coefficients. It is explained that one of the coefficients SOC " showed a sign opposite to what the hypothesis and the correlation coefficient would suggest " As a result, as the authors suggest: " Negative regression coefficients lead to odds ratios less than 1. For example, if a1 =−0.735 and exp(a1)= 0.479, then a company whose main activity is manufacturing has less chances of adopting an EPS than a company that does not belong to the same industry. "

The main sample in the study was 5 group of Israeli teachers (secular, orthodox, kibutz teachers, Druze and Arabs) The research method will be discussed further on. When analyzing factor analysis, we should introduce the predictor measures that were used in the study. Cultural groups: which was used as a dummy variable included four groups that were defined as a dichotomous variable, with 0 (not a member of the group) and 1 (member of the group) The reference group in this case was the Jewish population Commitment foci: An eight item scale was used to measure affective organizational commitment. Occupational commitment was also measured by an eight item scale. Job involevement, 10 items and work involvement (6 items) were other groups within the predictor measure Cultural dimensions: " Collectivism–individualism (six items), power distance (five items), uncertainty avoidance (five items), and masculinity–femininity (five items) " And Organizational citizenship behavior were the four predictor measures in the study. The one measure that applies to our subject is Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB), where the researchers used factor analysis on. The data on OCB was collected from principals in each schools. A 32 item list taken from OCB scales developed earlier in the literature was used and some items were modified for this specific research. The principles were asked to evaluate the teachers on these 32 items, on a scale ranging from 1 (never) to 5 (always). After the scale development, the items were subjected to a factor analysis. The result of the analysis revealed four factors. When we look at the first factor, we see that it includes 11 items regarding helping a specific person. Researchers labeled this scale as altruistic OCB, which also uncovered the 21% of the variance. The second factor, which explained 17% of the variance had nine items and was labeled in-role performance. The third and fourth items represented the 11 and 9 percent of the variance, respectively. The third item represents civic virtue while the fourth factor is related to conscientiousness. The authors have also included the results of the factor analysis which was conducted using AMOS: Solution=0, 98 Comparative Fix Index=0, 98. Other than factor analysis, several other methods were used such as correlation analysis, ANOVA, Scheffe Test and Regression Analysis. The correlation analysis was applied to the interrelationship among variables, in order to detect multicollinearity. ANOVA test was used to test the subjective cultural dimensions among the five groups examined. Regression was used to test other hypothesis.
