_4:07 pm_[bluesgunner] | Alright blues dudes, let's get the old mojo workin'.Is the blues still relevant to life now? If so, why? And how. This quote from an article from The Independant (UK newspaper) sparked the thought:_"These days, with a few notable exceptions, you have to search pretty thoroughly to find the last skeletal vestiges of the blues poking through the accumulated layers of puppy-fat and clutter of piercings on pop's plump, satiated body. At times, it seems as if the form has more to do with the unnatural experiments of some fiendish cultural Frankenstein in a dust-free, sterile Swedish laboratory. What else could explain Britney Spears? It's almost as if the blues became emotionally out-of-date, the deep core of pain which it bequeathed to pop having been replaced by the bland, anthemic melancholy of Coldplay and their ilk. It's a virus that has also seeped back into the blues itself, which for the most part has retreated into a Sunday lunchtime pub session sort of existence, in which bands of ageing musos hack out deracinated versions of standards bearing only the most tenuous relation to the blues."_Discuss. _9:13 am_[andabusers] | Mornin'.So, here's my introductory thingy, but I am afraid you will find it poorly filled out, as I have been lurking here to learn more about folky/bluesy/leadbelly-esque type music, as what I have heard I like, but I am too damn poor to go off and buy albums galore. And to add insult to injury I am *very* bad at categorising music. It tends to fall into either 'Yes' or 'No', for me. I would appreciate any suggestions.( Let the educatin' begin.Collapse ) (Comment on this) |

_6:48 pm_[beatnick138] | Old fashioned rockabilly dance tunes by Sun recording artists. By now, you probably all should have heard of Sun Records. There's no other single place on the planet that can be credited with giving so many world class, hit musicians their start in the 1950's than this little, dingy studio in Tennessee. When you look at the written roster on a typical day at Sun Records, you're blown away by some of the names. Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley and many others never would've been the famous musicians they were without the initial promotion and suggestions on sound from Sun Records owner and engineer Sam Phillips. This week's music features a few Sun Records recording artists at the top of their game. These songs were not necessarily recorded at Sun Studios, but each one of these men have had something to with Sun Records at one point of their career, usually their upstarts. I hope you enjoy them. 1. Charlie Feathers - Everybody's lovin' my baby 2. Charlie Feathers - One hand loose Charlie Feathers was the unsung king of rockabilly. He was around at the same time all of the greats were, he just never had the same kind of promotion (or the kind of polished, marketing class) that they had. His career spanned several decades, but his best material was put out in the 50's when rock and roll music was still fresh and dangerous. Take a listen of these two tracks and you'll hear the distinct sound that Charlie Feathers had for his music. 3. Charlie Rich - Lonely weekends Charlie Rich was a piano madman. He had every bit of technical skill at the keys that Jerry Lee Lewis had, he just never had the same kind of firey energy (but then again, who does have the same kind of energy as The Killer?). Charlie Rich, aka "The Silver Fox" was primarily a country and western musician, but he was never afraid to show his rock and roll side, or his cooler gospel influence. This track is his first hit single for Sun Records and it shows all of those influences, and as a result, is one of his best. 4. Elvis Presley - ( Now and then, there's ) A fool such as I Elvis Presley needs no introduction. His reputation however, does need a bit of clearing up. He wasn't always the plump, slosh of a man that you see in the cheesy polyester suits onstage in 1970's Las Vegas. For many years, Elvis Presley was an amazing entertainer and musician. He was in fact, a great rhythm guitarist and he came up with all of the vocal harmonies on his songs. The great Scotty Moore once said "Elvis could play everything on guitar", and from Scotty Moore, that's quite a compliment. This particular track is a very hip tune that was cut just before his movie career really took off and things got a little watered down. Dig the snakey lead guitar lines picked out by Scotty Moore and the neat vocalizations that The King came up with. I'd like to see you hit some of those notes. 5. Warren Smith - Red Cadillac and a black moustache Warren Smith had a very patchy output during his career. His best songs were made when he just calmed down and stopped trying so hard to be tough and modern. Some of his demos feature him burping, cursing and flubbing up simple guitar solos with his slow fingers. This song here, has none of those things, and you won't even detect a trace of his trademark sloppy drunkeness. All you get here is a very simple tear-jerker about a girl doing wrong and leaving him for a man in a red Cadillac. CLICK HERE to download these tracks (6 Comments |Comment on this) |

_1:48 pm_[beatnick138] | Application. Name: Nicholas Wilson City: I live in Berkeley, California. I'm originally from Phoenix, Arizona. Age: 20 Top Five (or more) Blues: Here goes... 1. Howlin' Wolf / Hubert Sumlin ( the most underrated musical partnership in history, I say )2. Robert Johnson3. Leadbelly4. John Lee Hooker ( that cocky bastard )5. T-Bone Walker6. Screamin' Jay Hawkins ( this on may be pushing the limits, but you've gotta love him )7. Bo DiddleyTop Five (or more) Folk: I'm not too big on folk music right now. **I usually get my fill with Dylan, and Leonard Cohen. I haven't delved too far into straight ahead folk as yet. Maybe this community will help me broaden my horizons a bit.**Top Five (or more) rockabilly / 50's Rock N' Roll: Oh, now you've gone and asked the sacred question. Here it is... 1. Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore, Bill Black and DJ Fontana, They were the kings. Enough said.2. Jerry Lee Lewis ( he was called the Killer for a reason )3. Johnny Cash ( He is my God )4. Fats Domino 5. Carl Perkins ( So yes, he started the whole rockabilly thing, but his follow through was a bit lacking due to that car accident. I don't think his momentum ever fully recovered from that ).6. Chuck Berry7. Eddie Cochran 8. Buddy Holly 9. Charlie Rich10. Charlie Feathers11. Roy Orbison12. Gene Vincent13. Warren Smith **I've left off all signs of rockablly revivalists, even though I truly enjoy music of the Blasters, The Reverend Horton Heat ( ahem... the CRAMPS ) and even some Stray cats here and there, I decided to stick to the roots instead of opening that whole can of worms.**Top Ten (or more) misc.: What's that? You want to hear my top Deathrock and Post Punk bands? Alright, here they are! 1. The Damned2. The Sisters of Mercy 3. The Smiths / Morrissey 4. The Birthday Party / Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds5. Bauhaus / Love and Rockets / Tones on Tail / Peter Murphy ( I can lump these into one if I want to! )6. True Sounds of Liberty7. Christian Death ( Rozz Williams only please )8. The Cure9. The Gun Club ( you look just like an Elvis from Hell )10. The Lords of the New Church11. Siouxsie and the Banshees12. Alien Sex Fiend About Yourself: I'm a music snob, but a music lover at the same time. I'm usually open to most different areas of music as far as genres are concerned, but I will absolutely not consider rap, modern country music (actually anything that has been considered mainstream country for the past thirty or so years has been mostly shit), cock rock, or death/grind/black/noise/shit core. I also don't like music that involves screaming or growling in place of actual vocals. I doesn't take talent to growl like an animal.Pictures: (if ye got 'em) (1 Comment |Comment on this) |
