WHFS 99.1: The True Alternative

WHFS 99.1 has been around for over 30 years. It is aired primarily in the DC Metropolitan area, including Maryland and Virgina. Starting in the late 60's, HFS has been an important part of the music scene in the area. Three generations have grown up on this station.

January 12, 2005 WHFS was abruptly taken off the air, due to reports of slipping ratings, leaving rock music fans with rival stations, 98 Rock, and DC 101. Both respectable stations but they both lack the legacy and reputation of 99.1.

Spanish Broadcasting partnered with Inifity Broadcasting to create EL Zol, to reach out to the Hispanic population of D.C.

WHFS sponsered such events as, HFSmas Nutcracker, and the HFStival. The HFStival in particular brought 65, 000 people to RFK Stadium this past May, which has been a tradition since 1991.

Fans of WHFS were as shocked and outraged as the DJ's who recieved only 2 hours of notice that their station would be taken off the air.

In attempts to get our station back petitions and protest have been started. And it worked!

Because they're back!
Friday, January 21, 2005, after a whopping 10 days off the air. WHFS 99.1 returned to the air waves. Now in two locations. Infinity teamed up with AOL to have continuous radio play on AOL, and Infity owned 105.7 picked up the station for a significant part of thier programming.
