The "Berufsverband Information Bibliothek", an organization of German librarians, hosts a database (2) with detailed information about the educational programmes of these institutions in the areas of libraries, archives, and documentation. Part of this database is a list (3) of all German-speaking universities with corresponding study programmes. This currently encompasses ten universities in Germany, one in Austria, and one in Switzerland. Four of these 12 universities offer courses for future music librarians, which will be described later on in this article. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The Commission on Service and Training of the German branch of IAML, in conjunction with the German IAML Board, has published recommendations for the content of music librarianship courses (4) and also hosts current information on the music librarianship courses in different German universities (5) (see Illustration 1). In the description of the university courses on the next pages, the term "SWS" will be used. SWS is the abbreviation for "Semesterwochenstunden" ("hours per week and semester") and denotes how many hours this course will last during one semester. A course with 4 SWS meets four hours per week and adds up to 60 hours overall in a 15-week semester. Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin The Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin is the only university in Germany with a Ph.D. programme in library science. All other German universities with library programmes are universities of applied sciences (Hochschulen fur Angewandte Wissenschaften) which offer Bachelor's and Master's programmes, but not Ph.D. programmes. The Humboldt-Universitat does not offer any specific courses in music librarianship, but the students have the possibility of combining the areas of library science and musicology during their studies. Students participating in the Bachelor's degree programme of "Library and Information Sciences" (6) (six semesters) must choose a second area out of fifty offerings where "Music and Media" is one of them. At the Master's level, the Humboldt-Universitat offers two different programmes (7): a full-time Master's degree programme in "Library and Information Science" with a duration of four semesters and a part-time Master's programme with e-learning modules and on-site courses in Berlin one weekend a month. Students of the part-time Master's degree programme need a university degree as prerequisite (e.g., a degree in musicology). University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hanover School III (Media, Information and Design) of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hanover offers a Bachelor's degree programme in "Information Management" (8) and a part-time Master's degree programme in "Information and Knowledge Management" (9). Since its accreditation in 2010, the major field of study, "Music," has been re-introduced to the Bachelor's degree programme. It consists of the modules "Formal Cataloguing of Music Supplies" and "Music Theory for Information Managers" and is being taught by lecturers with both library and musicological backgrounds. The first module is based on three fundamental modules on formal cataloguing and consists of the course "Theory and Practice of Formal Cataloguing of Music Supplies" (4 SWS) where knowledge about the German cataloguing rules for music documents (RAK-Musik) is taught. The second module encompasses two courses: "Introduction to Music History" (2 SWS) and "Music Theory and Musical Forms" (2 SWS). University of Applied Sciences in Leipzig In Leipzig, the Media School of the University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule fur Technik, Wirtschaft und Kultur) offers the programme "Library and Information Science" both as a Bachelor's and as a Master's degree programme (10). …

Based on the FRBR approach, we propose a novel work-centric metadata model for organizing the document collection. The primary data contained in the repository currently consists of scanned sheet music and digitized audio recordings. The repository can be searched using both classical and content-based retrieval mechanisms. To this end, we propose a workflow for automated content-based document analysis and indexing.

The main goal is to contribute to all parts of the Digital Library work flow from content acquisition over indexing to search and presentation. While not limited in terms of supported document types, reference support is developed for classical digital music and 3D architectural models. In this paper, we review the overall goals, approaches taken, and lessons learned so far in a highly integrated effort of university researchers and library experts. We address the problem of technology transfer, aspects of repository compilation, and the problem of inter-domain retrieval. The experiences are relevant for other project efforts in the non-textual Digital Library domain.

The proposed framework will integrate different types of content-repositories - each one specialized for a specific multimedia domain - into one seamless system and will add features such as automatic annotation, full-text retrieval and recommender services to non-textual documents. Two multimedia domains, 3D graphics and music, will be

The project considers all steps of the processing chain in libraries ranging from repository compilation, semi-automatic, content-based indexing, to visual-interactive search and presentation, and operational aspects. In this paper, we describe the chosen approach, specifically detailing on experiences and lessons learned up to now in the course of this project.
