Kisspeptin, a hypothalamic peptide encoded by the KISS1 gene, is widely reported as a key factor in the regulation of luteinizing hormone (LH)/follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion, which may be potentially involved with the development of PCOS. The aim of the study was to estimate the serum kisspeptin level in PCOS patients and evaluate the association of kisspeptin with other biochemical, and hormonal parameters in women with PCOS. Methods: This case-control study was conducted at the department of reproductive endocrinology and infertility, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh from August 2020 to July 2021. A total of 90 patients between age 18-30 years were enrolled in this study. Data was collected on variables of interest by using the structured questionnaire designed for interview, observation, clinical examination, an...

Insulin resistance (IR) is a common disorder, which may impair female fertility by causing ovulatory dysfunction. Lifestyle modification and insulin sensitizers are commonly used in the management of IR. This study aimed to compare the effects of metformin plus myo-inositol versus metformin alone as pre-treatment in ovulation induction in polycystic ovary syndrome with insulin resistance. Methods: This prospective quasi-experimental study was conducted in the department of reproductive endocrinology and infertility, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, from July 2020 to June 2021. A total of 52 insulin-resistant infertile PCOS women were included in this study, who were allocated into two groups by using odd-even numbers and given two different treatments. Results: Mature follicles and mid-luteal serum progesterone levels were significantly higher in metf...

Traditional protocol of letrozole includes administration of letrozole for 5 days in first half of follicular phase which induces ovulation in 61.7% cases. Few recent studies have shown that extended letrozole protocol causes more follicles to grow and induces more ovulation than the traditional protocol. The aim was to compare the effects of low dose-extended letrozole protocol and double dose-short letrozole protocol for ovulation induction in infertile PCOS patients. Methods: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted in the department of reproductive endocrinology and Infertility at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on seventy infertile polycystic ovary syndrome patients. Low dose-extended letrozole group or experimental grou...

Typically, the ovaries are entirely normal, although one or both also may be undescended, hypoplastic, or associated with an inguinal hernia. Affected patients often also have urologic anomalies (15-40) % (unilateral renal agenesis, ectopic or horseshoe kidney, and duplication of the collecting systems) and skeletal malformations (5-10) %, (e.g., hemiverterbrae and scoliosis, or the Klippel-Feil syndrome). The cause is unknown, although some cases are associated with chromosomal translocations or occur in familial aggregates, suggesting a genetic basis. Logically, müllerian agenesis might be attributed to an activating mutation in the gene encoding AMH or its receptor, causing excess AMH activity, but none have been identified. Aim: The aim of this study was to analyze and present rare cases of partial...

As the patients are mostly asymptomatic and diagnostic tests have low sensitivity and specificity, diagnosis of genital tuberculosis is very much challenging. The aim of this study is to evaluate the patients of genital tuberculosis diagnosed at laparoscopy. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 12 patients who underwent laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. Cases were analyzed according to history, relevant pre surgery investigation findings, laparoscopic and hysteroscopic findings, histopathology, MTB PCR and Acid-Fast Bacillus (AFB) tests reports. Results: Mean age 25 years, range (22 -33), ten (83.3%) with primary subfertility and two (16.6%) with secondary subfertility. Two had secondary amenorrhea, two women presented with scanty menstrual flow and seven women with regular cycle with average flow and duration. Two (16.6%) had previously comp...

Urogenital infection accounts for about 15% of male factor infertility. Sexually transmitted infections can impair fertility in men by organ damage, cell damage via mediators of inflammation, obstruction, binding to spermatozoa. There may be inflammation of the tissues of testis and genital tract such as orchitis and epididymitis, partial or complete obstruction of genital tract, reduced viability and motility of spermatozoa.

Methods: This cross sectional analytical study was carried out in 50 women diagnosed as polycystic ovary syndrome on the basis of Rotterdam Criteria (group I) and 50 women of reproductive age group without polycystic ovary syndrome (group II) attending the outpatient department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka during the period of July 2013 to June 2015. Results: The mean total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL were significantly (p<0.005) higher in group I but mean HDL cholesterol was not significantly (p>0.05) associated with PCOS. Patients with raised total cholesterol : HDL ratio having the risk of developing dyslipidemia estimated to be 11.16 (95% CI = 3.9-33.1) times higher in PCOS patients than that in the group II. In multivariate logistic regression analysis of...
