The function of building products is witnessing a huge leap to extend beyond mere functional requirements to account for the environmental benefit as well. Piezoelectric flooring tiles are amongst the most promising for indoor energy generation especially in public buildings with great occupancy patterns and intensity. Hence, this study presents a comprehensive review of literature for the use of piezoelectric. The next step deducted parameter integration for the proper selection of piezoelectric tiles. This determined its successful application in the building industry-especially the transportation section which has a notable contribution to energy consumption and emission release. These were divided into factors related to the project type and location, as well as proper selection of the piezoelectric tile product. This hypothesis was tested in the case study. Hence, the application of piezoelectricity was investigated in a Metro station in a core urban area in Egypt, with an estimate of almost 57,000 daily passengers. The selection of the metro line and station as well as the location of installing the tiles was based on the highest passenger density class which provided the greatest step-footage. Furthermore, the selection of the number and type of piezoelectric tiles was determined based on the current project's energy consumption. The study compared the two shortlisted types of tiles in terms of their power generation capacity, initial capital cost, lifespan and expected savings. The results showed that twelve tiles were needed to generate the station's needs for electric energy using Sustainable Energy Floor tiles while only eight tiles were needed using Waynergy piezoelectric tiles. More than 50,000 children die every year from the shortage of fresh water. In Egypt, the need for fresh water is increasing daily due to the high demands from the growing population. Moreover, Ethiopian dam put Egypt and Sudan in a very risky situation. Egyptian North coast urban settlements are located far away from the River Nile and regular methods for seawater desalination is highly expensive as well as transferring fresh water from River Nile to north coast urban settlements is not an option. This research intends to present cheap system for seawater desalination by integrating solar glass pyramid tank with building sanitation system and replacing it with the regular building water tanks. The presented research used experimental method to investigate the efficiency of solar glass pyramid tank. The research built solar glass pyramid tank in hot arid climate region which is Cairo-Egypt, and measure the amount of seawater desalinated and compare it with the amount of water consumed in single residential house. This tank will desalinate the seawater using the solar radiation to evaporate the seawater and turn it to steam, the steam will be stored in another tank as fresh water. According to the presented research, SGP will satisfy almost 3% of the basic needs for fresh water in single-family unit in which it can satisfy the drink and cooking activity in middle class single family home. The percentage of desalinated water will increase if SGP tank were linked to heater system that accelerate the evaporation process.

Research paper thumbnail of A digital tool for integrating renewable energy devices within landscape elements: Energy-scape online application

Journal of Cleaner Production

Abstract There is a major shift toward integrating renewable energy (RE) within the urban context... more Abstract There is a major shift toward integrating renewable energy (RE) within the urban context to create zero energy buildings, passive buildings and smart cities. Landscape approximately occupies 65% of the urban area, which nominates landscape to play a major role in generating energy from renewable sources (e.g. solar, wind, etc). In order to achieve this objective, “Energy-scape” elements have been introduced to generate clean and efficient energy by integrating renewable energy (RE) devices with landscape elements. Previous research presented Energy-scape database to help landscape and urban designers to replace landscape with Energy-scape elements and to focus on integrating renewable energy (RE) within the urban environment. Several architects and landscape designers still lack the basic knowledge of RE, never to mention, the complexity of Energy-scape database that is continuously updated. Furthermore, the lack of computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools that can help architects, designers and decision-makers to swiftly integrate RE devices with the urban environment is another barrier to spread the implementation of similar projects. This research attempts to overcome this challenge by introducing a new web-based application to design landscape while integrating Energy-scape elements in urban environment. The algorithm of this web-based application analyzes existing landscape based on existing resources to select suitable Energy-scape elements, required area, and the best suitable locations of these elements within a specific project. The proposed algorithm enables the users to modify suggested locations and area of the Energy-scape elements to meet the project’s needs in term of the available budget, area or the required energy production. Further, the new algorithm calculates the impact of integrating Energy-scape elements within the project in term of cost (e.g. capital and running costs), lifetime, and total energy saving. Moreover, the current paper introduces a simplified user-friendly web-based tool of the proposed new algorithm that will help architects and landscape designers to use Energy-scape elements efficiently within their projects. The efficiency of the presented web-based application will be tested in a case study of Al-Azhar Park in Cairo, Egypt to validate the software capabilities in a real-case scenario. The research concludes that the proposed software application is an effective tool for landscape designers to use Energy-scape elements through identifying the optimum type and location of them within landscape design projects and calculating the impact of using them in terms of energy-savings and carbon emission (CO2) reduction.

Creating a clean and healthy environment is an essential goal to protect the planet and human race. The environmental changes became a great issue all over the world especially in the developing countries such as Egypt, lately the electricity generation process and the heavy usage of fossil fuel increased the numbers of children infected by asthma and lung problems due to the air pollution. In order to have clean and healthy environment, these countries must reduce the use of non-renewable sources and replace them with clean renewable sources. Relying on non-renewable sources for electricity generation is not a suitable option anymore for the developing countries that suffers from economic problem, has no medical insurance policy and has high pollution rates such ...
