Mohamed Enani, one of the Arab world’s most significant translators, was also a prolific writer o... more Mohamed Enani, one of the Arab world’s most significant translators, was also a prolific writer on translation theory. Though he—like most practitioners of translation—often expressed a skeptical attitude towards translation theory per se, he admired theoretical perspectives on translation which depart from dry linguistic approaches to view translation as a human activity that cannot be separated from its sociocultural context. For example, he believed in the Functional theories of Reiss and Vermeer, which put emphasis on the nature of the text type as well as the purpose of translating, making them the main factors which should be taken into consideration during both the process of translation as well as assessing a translation. This paper investigates Enani’s translation theory as expressed in his books and as applied in his actual translations in light of Reiss and Vermeer’s Functional theory, in an attempt to highlight similarities and differences between Enani’s views and Reiss and Vermeer’s views. This study argues that Enani’s theoretical assumptions are generally in line with those of Reiss and Vermeer. Enani’s literary translations, however, occasionally depart from his theoretical belief in a way that shows that decision making in translation is not a straightforward process, but one in which various factors come into play, including changes in the translator’s view of his/her own role as well as changes in his/her conceptualization of the target readers

DESCRIPTION The study is an examination of a number of Arabic translations of Shakespearean drama... more DESCRIPTION The study is an examination of a number of Arabic translations of Shakespearean drama in the light of Venuti's concepts of domestication and foreignisation. It investigates the different strategies used in handling culture-specific terms, imagery, syntax and prosody in the light of the aforementioned concepts. The analysis shows that though translators sometimes have clear views of what translation must be like they usually end up adopting an eclectic approach that cannot be described as totally domesticating or totally foreignising. They seem to apply, probably unconsiously, Levy's "Minimax Principle", where the translator opts for the strategy that would bring about a maximal effect with a minimum of effort (and time).

Domestication can be defined as the attempt to produce a target text that conforms to the expectations of the target reader about text writing and translation through employing whatever strategy capable of making the target text "look like" an original. Foreignisation involves producing target texts that resist all the target reader's attempts to conceive them as texts originally written in his/her own language by depending on any strategy likely to stress the fact that the target texts are essentially different from texts originally written in the language of the target reader. In other words, in domestication the translator sees to it that the target texts' identities as translations be concealed, while in foreignisation s/he does his/her best to bring into focus the fact that the target text is a translation, not an original.
