Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States

IF YOU APPLY FOR ACCEPTANCE INTO THIS COMMUNITY, POST SOMETHING THAT STATES YOUR NAME, MAJOR, AND GRADUATING YEAR. THANK YOU!

{CAPA stands for Creative and Performing Arts}
This is the information from the CAPA homepage:

Pittsburgh was one of the first urban districts in the nation to include the creative and performing arts among its magnet school programs. CAPA opened its doors in 1979 in the Baxter Elementary School with an enrollment of 35 part-time students. The full-time program began in 1983 with 50 students and has grown steadily over the years. As we start the 2004-2005 school year, we anticipate the projected enrollment of approximately 500 talented students.

Our unique program is the result of the hard work of a passionate group of school and community leaders who came together with a vision of an arts magnet school that would provide new opportunities for young people with artistic talent. CAPA is an example of a growing trend of schools across the country realizing the value of an arts-centered education to prepare students for successful lives and careers.

In 2000, a similarly inspired group of educators, parents and leaders came together to plan the relocation of CAPA into the Downtown Cultural District. Due to their collective efforts and the extraordinary generosity of Francois Bitz, a leader in the technology business who donated land and a building for the new school, we are able to relocate the program to a state of the art facility. CAPA opened last fall as a regional high school serving eligible students from Pittsburgh, the surrounding communities, and the tri-state area.

CAPA has had only four principals during its 24 years--Dr. Harry Clark, Ms. Normandie Fulson, Mr. Ronald Thornhill, and Mr. Michael T. Thorsen, who is currently serving as principal.

Michael T. Thorsen – Principal
Antonia Vigil – Vice Principal
