Instead, I shall primarily concentrate on a close reading of Vergil's second Eclogue. The role of ecocriticism, the school of literary theory devoted to the study of nature and the environment, will be subtle; in challenging easy distinctions such as town and country, or human and natural, it has inspired me to ask new questions about the imaginative world of Corydon, Alexis, and Iollas.
