An important component of the institutional framework supporting investment in new technologies i... more An important component of the institutional framework supporting investment in new technologies is venture capital institutions. A group of developing countries, especially from Asia has been rather successful in establishing and nurturing this way of financing new technologies. The present paper attempts to survey the efforts of these countries towards using venture capital institutions as financiers of new technologies. In specific terms, the paper, based essentially on secondary source material, maps out the ways in which these countries have gone about promoting venture capital based new technology firms. In addition, we analyse the VC investments in these countries in terms of stage, technology and source. The paper also develops an index of venture capital development across the selected developing countries. The index allows the ranking of the VC industry in any particular country according to its level of development.
