Since India gained independence from the British rule in 1947, entrepreneurship started gaining popularity and many traditional stigmas were broken. Startups were beginning to be encouraged and supported by the government, the occupational immobility due to the caste system was broken and women started participating in business. Today, digital startups have changed the way business is done in India. Zomato has revolutionized the food and beverage market. OlaCabs has revolutionized the public transport sector. PayTM has become the main payment gateway in India. Flipkart, recently purchased by Walmart, has revolutionized shopping for the Indian consumers. LimeRoad is an example of women empowerment and how digital startups can help promote small local businesses. BYJU’S is revolutionizing pre- college education by digitalizing it and Hotstar is the largest online video streaming platform in India, with a user base similar to that of Amazon Prime. This is a topic which would be interesting to carry further into a PhD research.
