This study reflects the exonyms viewed in the Arab world. It starts with Arab world identification, with the two groups of Arab states: in Africa and in Asia. Very important seems to be The availability of maps and the quality of the toponymy are both important considerations (I do not understand the meaning of quality in this context). French, Italian and English are the main languages, but a particular situation appears in Israel where almost all geographical names were renamed in Hebrew. For Arab users the names are based on Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), with all Arab coutries using the same Arabic literary language. But most of the Arab world also uses "parallel toponymy" involving various languages. The change from Arabic into Latin is pronounced in various ways. A special case arises in the Maghreb coutries, while opposition to standardisation is also a reality in the Arab world. Rezumat. Exonime în l...

It is a list of more than 300 titles of various Arabic books, a sort of a catalog, which the author proposes to study in detail at a later stage. Now, the basic information on the document is given, resulting from the study of the manuscript itself.

Research paper thumbnail of Late Appearance of Early Arab Cartography. A 19th C. Manuscript Map by Az-Zayyānī: Its Toponymy and Its Vision of the World

The question of survival of the Ptolemaic cartographical tradition in the Arab World, all through... more The question of survival of the Ptolemaic cartographical tradition in the Arab World, all through the Idrisian transmission chain and down to the modern times, is the subject of this article. A handwritten map found in Arabia, which – in this author’s opinion – was authored by a Moroccan intellectual Az-Zayyānī at the break of the 18th–19th cc., is apparently the last pre-modern Arabic cartographical creation. It’s history is obscure, but the physical shape bears strong resemblance to the other two published maps by the same author (whereabouts of those two manuscript specimens, unfortunately, are unkown at present). The map is analysed in respect of its geographical contents as depicting the world, as well as of the intellectual horizons the map presented to its users at its time, and questions about its relevance are asked.
