Written by Kang Eun-kyung, Gyeongseong Creature is a South Korean historical horror drama series set in 1945 during the occupation of Gyeongseong (the old name for Seoul) by Japanese forces. Starring Park Seo-joon, Han So-hee, Claudia Kim, Lee Moo-saeng, and Bae Hyun-sung, the series’ first season was directed by Jung Dong-yoon and Roh Young-sub, and Season 2 was directed by Jo Yeong-min. The show explores horrific experiments conducted on civilians by the Japanese army and the rebels who rise up against them, all while a monstrous creature is born of the experiments. Gyeongseong Creature premiered on Netflix in December 2023, hitting Netflix’s Global Top 10 lists in multiple countries. The second season, released in September 2024, was the second most-watched series on Netflix’s global list of non-English TV titles. Critical reception to the show was also quite positive, with praise for its costumes and production. With a genre-bending story full of suspense and drama, Gyeonseong Creature is a highly entertaining watch with a dark tone and high production value.

Mike Flanagan’s third Netflix miniseries, Midnight Mass, follows a small community on Crockett Island as a supernatural presence takes root in the town. Strange things start happening after the young priest, Father Paul (Hamish Linklater) replaces Crockett’s pastor – dead cats are found along the beach, people disappear, and the ill and injured are miraculously healed. Some believe it to be divine intervention, but others see more sinister forces at play. Like its predecessors, The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass is a haunting yet beautiful look at humanity through the lens of the horror genre. Flanagan balances the spooky and the spiritual effectively, producing equal moments of terror and revelation for the people of Crockett.
