Diagnostic criteria
for Anorexia Nervosa
From the DSM-IV
A. Refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height (e.g., weight loss leading to maintenance of body weight less than 85% of that expected; or failure to make expected weight gain during period of growth, leading to body weight less than 85% of that expected).
B. Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight.
C. Disturbance in the way in which one's body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of the current low body weight.
D. In postmenarcheal females, amenorrhea, i.e., the absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles. (A woman is considered to have amenorrhea if her periods occur only following hormone, e.g., estrogen, administration.)
Diagnostic criteria
for Bulimia Nervosa
From the DSM-IV
A. The patient repeatedly eats in binges. In a binge episode the patient has both of:
--Consumes much more food than most people would in similar circumstances and in a similar period of time
--Feels that the eating is out of control
B. The patient repeatedly controls weight gain by inappropriate means such as: fasting, self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise or abuse of laxatives, diuretics or other drugs.
C. On average, both of the above behaviors (binge eating and inappropriate control) have occurred at least twice a week for at least 3 consecutive months.
D. Weight and body shape unduly affect the patient's self-evaluation.
These symptoms do not occur solely during episodes of Anorexia Nervosa.
Specify whether:
Purging type: The patient often induces vomiting or misuses diuretics or laxatives. This is the more common type.
Nonpurging type: The patient fasts or exercises excessively but does not often induce vomiting or misuse diuretics or laxatives.
This is not a community for people to learn how to develop an eating disorder nor is it a wonder diet community. Eating disorders are a disease, not a lifestyle choice. Please don't come here looking for tips or how to lose 50lbs for prom. That's not what this community is for. It is for people who are currently living their eating disorders, that are not in recovery, but do need support. I only say "not in recovery" because i think for people that are going through that this community will be quite triggering. No constant worshipping of celebrities such as MK SHE IS NOT THE REASON PEOPLE HAVE EATING DISORDERS AND IT IS OFFENSIVE. If you self diagnose please read the above criteria. 170lbs at 5'5 is NOT anorexia.
