Small Hydropower (SMH) turbines are rotated by a relatively low-pressure head and usually generates low energy output usually referred to as mini, micro or Pico energy range. Pelton Turbines are generally found to be amongst the most suitable for a low flow power generation. This study focuses on the design of a model Pico size Pelton Wheel modified to use the velocity of water harvested from rooftops during rainfall for the purpose of supplementing energy supply. By the design, the rainwater from the building rooflines are collected and passed through the downspouts into an elevated tank and then the height of the bottom of the tank gives the required head (pressure) to spin the microturbine and then generates a Pico level energy. The Pico size hydropower system directly connected to a small, variable speed, an electric generator which is capable of supplying the power needed for some minimal but very essential functions like charging handsets, mini gadgets and low energy lighting purposes. Specific design calculations, as well as analysis of the model Pico size energy system, was performed to ascertain the feasibility of the design meeting some specified energy needs, thus reducing energy poverty.

The corrosion rates for each sample were examined using gravimetric method and polarization measurement. The samples were immersed into E40 fuel grade ethanol containing NaCl concentrations of (0, 8, 16, 24 and 32 mg/L) for a minutest of 10 days and a maximum of 40days. Results obtained from both gravimetric and polarization measurements show that as chloride concentration amplified from 0 mg/L to 32 mg/L, there was an increase in corrosion rate of the carbon steel with the exception of a slight decrease at 24 mg/L on the 30th and 40th day. Corrosion rate was observed to be dependent on exposure time.

The furnace was made of a casing of low carbon steel sheets inside which the refractory bricks were moulded, forming the furnace cavity to prevent heat loss. The pyrolysis capsule was made of high carbon steel tube with flanges which can be opened for batch loading of the precursors and evacuation of products. The furnace was designed to be gas-fired due to high efficiency and cleaner nature of gas energy. The pyrolysis capsule is installed along the centre of the furnace cavity where combustion takes place. The heat energy accumulated around the capsule is being absorbed into the pyrolysis chamber where precursors are being loaded, the regulation of the temperature of the combustion chamber via the installed feedback mechanism to monitor and control the system. The derived differential equations, solved using the Dormand-Prince pair numerical formula, was then used to simulate values of displacements as affected by damping coefficients and the sky-hook constant. The simulated results showed that the maximum amplitude of the sprung mass, which is linked to ride discomfort, increases while those of unsprung masses, which affects the road holding ability, decreases with increasing depth of pothole. Furthermore, displacements for both sprung and unsprung masses varied directly with damping coefficient. Finally, as the sky-hook constant of the semi active system model increases, values of amplitudes of unsprung masses decreases while those of sprung masses increases. It was, thus, shown that the vertical displacements of vehicle bodies and wheels are dependent on the depth of potholes, dam...

They were designed to produce feedstocks for the country’s plastics, rubber and detergent industries. The poor performance of the three state-owned plants and the unsuccessful outcomes of other proposed petrochemical plans discouraged the government from establishing new ones. This situation led to both losses in revenue and low capacity utilization. The Eleme petrochemical complex was later sold to Indorama, a private concern, which surprisingly turned around the fortunes of the plant within three years. This paper gives an in-depth insight into the present condition of the Nigeria petrochemical sector and examines the causes of the suboptimal performance of the state-owned petrochemical companies based on previous reviews. Finally, the cause and effect tool (Ishikawa or Fishbone diagram) summed up all highlighted factors under the seven M’s (Material, Method, Me...

Micro-milling is a fast and cost-efficient threedimensional fabrication method with the ability to achieve good accuracy, low surface roughness and extraordinary material removal rate (MRR) compared to some other micro manufacturing processes. Given the need for components with high dimensional integrity, identification of appropriate machining conditions is very vital to getting good surface finish. It is also required to couple different complex dynamics which are associated with this machining technique. Chatter during milling and micro-milling process bring adverse effects in surface quality, dimensional accuracy and in tool life. There is need for versatile modelling of micro end-milling dynamics in order to understand how chatter affects the micro end milling operation and to advance the synthetic application of several chatter stability parameters to overcome the lim...

The manufacturing industries of Nigeria are in a state of comatose, just as research activities in her ivory towers of learning is at a low state because of the epileptic electricity supply. There are approved licenses for electricity generation to the tune of 26,000 MW as of 2015, and the current available capacity is in excess of 6000 MW of the installed generation capacity of about 12,000 MW. An average of about 4000 MW is what get distributed to the populace partly due to the constraints on the transmission and the distribution network, however, the manufacturing industries demand stands in excess of 13,000 MW. Decentralized generation in line with some of the windows of opportunity provided by the National Electric Regulatory Commission will allow for the supply of t...

To ensure constant power supply and avoid complexity of changing batteries for wireless electronics and sensors, especially in the case of usages in remote areas, self-energy generating devices have become a necessity. The authors briefly review alternative to batteries; options such as electrostatic generation, dielectric elastomers and piezoelectric materials which are considered very promising for their capacity to change stains in the material into electrical vitality and be incorporated into electronic gadgets. The paradigm shift in the technological world towards producing electronic devices with focus on reduction in size, cost and energy consumption have constantly considered the generator based on Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). This article highlights the impacts and challenges of using MEMs based generators for providing power sources in small wireless sensor nodes, in place of batteries.

The world fossil fuel reserve is fast depleting, and also, it dissipates unhealthy emissions, this, has led to researches to seek sustainable alternatives in biofuels production. The authors experimented with the production of biodiesel from refined, bleached and deodorized palm olein (RBD) extracted from unrefined palm oil (UPO). Despite being considered as a feasible biodiesel feedstock, scanty reports had been found on the processing of biodiesel from palm olein compared to other oils from the palm tree. The transesterification of RBD palm olein with methanol and potassium hydroxide (KOH) as catalyst yielded biodiesel with an average yield greater than 50% in this experimental work. The derived biodiesel has a density of 0.884 g/ml and a flashpoint of 208°C, which is equivalent to ASTM D9...

Tumour sizes of about 3 cm are now been effectively treated with thermal ablation therapy using either microwave ablation or radiofrequency ablation. The impact of the slot position on a coaxial antenna on the extent of thermal lesion at the tumour site was investigated numerically in this study by varying the slot distance from the antenna tip using COMSOL Multiphysics as the modelling tool. The coaxial antenna size investigated has a diameter of 1.79 mm, with a central conductor diameter of 0.29 mm and Tefzel ETFE as the catheter material. The coaxial antenna performance was optimized at a slot distance of 6 mm from the antenna tip. The total power dissipation density and hence, the degree of thermal lesion created during the procedure is dependent on slot position of the coaxial antenna.

The OPMF collected was treated with deionized water and NaOH, and then grounded to a particle size of 354 microns. The composite was then produced by adding different quantities of the OPMF (weight % of 40—10 in steps of 10%) to unsaturated polyester resin to obtain comp. 1--comp. 4. Test specimens for the various mechanical tests were prepared for the different compositions and the tests were carried out following standard procedures. SOLIDWORKS was used to simulate the actual behavior of the helical gears. Results obtained showed that the biocomposite material for all composition can be used for designing helical gears for paper shredding machine and comp. 3 had the best properties in terms of displacement.

The objectives of this paper are to investigate the process variability and evaluate the impact on output as well as to identify assignable variables, estimate variability indices and develop matching solutions for improved performance. The paper adopted method of variability pooling for a job shop operating in a non competitive environment with zero buffered inventory policy. Structured questionnaires were administered on the plant workers. Data collected from the plant production records for 2012, 2013, 2014 and in seven production lines were analyzed. Prior to this study, the coefficient of variation (CV) for Awka, Gwagwalada, Lagos and Lagos State Plants showed that measured variability level of the plant were 0.62, 0.67, 0.60 and 0.78, respectively. Comparatively, results obtained after the study showed a significant reduction in process time, cycle time, machine utilization, queue length and waiting time on queue, leading to increased production rate in all the plants. The main contribution of this work from a process efficiency perspective is the low CV achieved that enables 40% increase in net annual income for each plant.
