The interesting ingredient of bhelpuri is the puri (a wafer), which is edible and serves as a spoon. Bhelpuri though associated with city of Mumbai, has found its variants all across India and in fact the globe.

Metaphorically, Bhelpuri can also map to the French word “potpourri”, a veritable collection of odds and ends. The ingenuity of the bhelpuri server lies in adding different ingredients into the sauce createing unique flavours. It also could reflects the multitude of activities that is a part of life. Our disordered thoughts when they get manifested and expressed, potentially could be unique, tangy and mouth watering - most important - fulfilling and meaningful.

I hope you will get a taste of Bhelpuri – reading this small book and savor the flavors slowly!

Let us meet

Thoughts that arise inside my mind are so diverse and are influenced by so many triggers that it is impossible to capture them all. Surprise that they became stories and poems over a period of time in my life. Further, many of these started as questions in my professional work as a scientist, researcher in applied software science and then as an entrepreneur and an innovation consultant. Most of these were unplanned – perhaps therefore real and pure – from deep inside me. The small poems that I call thought-snippets are windows to my mind and feelings over multiple years of passing through life. The stories – some of them happened because of specific events, some my mind imagined and created. The articles on innovation and starting up on developing an idea are part of potential ways and means to achieve your goals and ends. The key is these are not straight forward as steps in a process or an algorithm. All these are interlinked in ways that you - dear reader - have to find on your own.

The question is why these thoughts occur and why I expressed them in these articles, poems and stories? It is a mystery and a personal journey to understand myself. Who am I? Why am I? What am I? Why do we exist? Why does the universe exist? The questions remained unanswered to me. Experts were ignorant of my questions

The methodology is based on (1) a decomposition of the problem into a few main controversial issues, (2) systematic interviews of subject area specialists to obtain a specification of the decision setting, consisting of a list of stakeholders with their capabilities, positions, and salience on each of the issues; (3) computer simulation. The computer simulation models incorporate only the main processes through which differences in positions and salience are accommodated in binding decisions: management of meaning through the provision of convincing information, challenges, and exchanges. The methodology generates insights into the likely outcomes of the process, the amount of conflict involved, and the stability of the outcomes. These insights and the investigation of the effects of strategic moves provide major strategic advantages to the user. This is likely to lead to a better representation of the user's own position in the decision outcome and the creation of a broader political and social support behind the decision outcome.

Incidence and prevalence of OSA is on the constant rise ever since this entity came to forefront three decades ago. Precise treatment of underlying OSA is extremely important in major NCDs like diabetes mellitus, hypertension, endocrine disorders and vascular diseases. OSA is subcategorized in to mild, moderate and severe based of apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI). Based on the severity grading, treatment of OSA ranges from life style modifications to oral appliances, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and surgeries. AHI system of severity grading in OSA has several inherent shortcomings and using AHI system for severity grading as the holy grail is likely to be counter-productive. AHI system equates apnoea and hypopnea as equal events, whereas physiological effects vary significantly. AHI system does not account duration of apnoea or body position during apnoeic events. We discuss at length the pitfalls of AHI system of severity grading in OSA.

Time-Temperature-Indicator (TTI) labels available today can indicate the remaining shelf life of these perishable products. This technology can change the way perishable goods inventory is managed today, from a First-In-First-Out (FIFO) and Fixed Sell-By-Date basis to Least Shelf Life First Out (LSFO). In this paper a futuristic solution combining TTI and wireless technologies is proposed. Although the TTI and wireless based solution proposed in the paper is considered better, the benefits of the proposed solution have to be analyzed in quantitative terms. These have been analyzed using a Petri Net based approach for system simulation. The analysis shows that a retailer of perishable goods can reduce the losses suffered due to the expiry of perishable items before they can be sold, by more than 90 % and increase the net profits by more than 10 % in the test scenario. Thus we can c...

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2008

The challenges of designing the needed Ultra Large Scale (ULS) systems are beyond the methods and... more The challenges of designing the needed Ultra Large Scale (ULS) systems are beyond the methods and techniques that humanity currently knows of. These systems are characterized by extraordinary decentralization, inherently conflicting, unknowable and diverse requirements, continuous evolution and deployment, heterogeneous, inconsistent, and changing elements, erosion of people/system boundary, normal failures and new paradigms for acquisition and policy. Today the largest systems being designed are what in the US military parlance are called System of Systems (SoS). The current cutting-edge SoS are characterized by operational and managerial independence of elements, evolutionary development, emergent behavior and geographic distribution. ULS will be SoS at Internet Scale. This is not a simple matter of extending the current approaches as P.W. Anderson in his 1972 classic paper described More is Different. We have definitely come a long way from that time in our approaches to design systems. Yet predominantly our approaches continues to be constrained by the analytical and logical thinking (analogical thinking) that we have perfected over past centuries. The research agenda proposed to design ULS systems includes-Human Interaction, Computational Emergence, Design of all levels, Computational Engineering, Adaptive System Infrastructure, Adaptable and Predictable System Quality, Policy, Acquisition and Management. In this paper we explore the suitability of different thinking dimensions for designing ULS Systems-these are Lean Thinking, Inventive Thinking and Systems Thinking. Our hypothesis is that these thinking dimensions need to play a much larger part than the current analogical thinking that we are used to, in order to design these highly complex systems of the future. We propose our framework named the Lean Inventive Systems Thinking (LIST) as a possible approach to design such ULS Systems.

That it is changing rapidly is also becoming painfully clear. However, what is shocking and difficult to comprehend is that the world is changing rapidly in multiple dimensions, in multiple ways from multiple directions impacting each dimension. This is unprecedented. The scale of change and the speed of change are conspiring to make it exceedingly difficult for us to respond to the new – as the new arrives rapidly, more frequently and from unknown directions, these days. What further compounds the problems are our existing methods of responding to these challenges are failing – failing miserably. We need new ways. These may be evolved from the existing known ways to solve problems, imagine a new future or improve an existing system. This evolution may lead to new set of tools, techniques, methodologies and frameworks for us to think, imagine and execute the new or ways of responding to the new. Alternatively, these methods may be radically different from the existing ways. In this paper we propose and articulate a new framework to respond to the globalizing complexity. The framework is based on integration of five thinking dimensions – Analytical, Logical, Value, Inventive and Systems Thinking – the ALVIS thinking. It also proposes tools and techniques borrowed from existing methods besides proposing some of its own. The key learning and message, if one may say so, from this integrated framework of thinking and responding to the new challenges, is to amalgamate creativity, decision-making and innovation, as a comprehensive capability by empowering ideas together.

Information Technology has been changing the rules of the game rapidly in all spheres of life. Information Technology (IT) business itself the change is not only uncertain but has proven to be unforecastable. Rapidity of change due to advances in IT and in the IT-business has created an extreme level of competition that has been unprecedented as IT has eliminated various types of barriers for anyone to start a new business. The newer technologies like cloud, mobile, analytics, machine learning/artificial intelligence, and internet-of-things, are enforcing IT services companies to transform themselves to deal with the newer challenges as they are creating newer companies. As of 2017, a quarter of organisations are spending 15 percent or more of their IT budget on machine learning capabilities, and we expect the number of machine learning examples to rise in the near future. In this scenario, Companies should not only focus on ‗building new competencies' but also developing new business models. These challenges are accelerating the search for innovative business models. Business model will be useful in distinguishing one business from another and identifying the resources necessary to implement them. Business model converts innovation to economic value for the business. The mushrooming of technology-based start-ups indicates a new threat and opportunity. In this scenario, business model innovation has become the key to competitive advantage. For example, in the Aviation industry-No-frill Business model‖ had made huge impact around the world. According to this model, Airlines will offer generally low fares in exchange for eliminating many traditional passenger services This study identifies the recent disrupting trends in IT. This paper develops the Business model matrix representing the innovative, non-linear business models for IT industry.

This book shares unknown aspects of Toyota Motors, the Toyota Production System (TPS) and the Toyota product development process. The "elegant solution" discussed in the book and TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) share many commonalities. The Elegant Solution Sakichi Toyoda, the founder of Toyota Industries, is often referred to as the father of the Japanese industrial revolution and the "King of Japanese Inventors." Toyoda's three principles for innovation are: ingenuity in craft, the pursuit of perfection and how the innovation fits into society. The elegant solution focuses on the idea that business innovation is about satisfaction and value, not new gadgetry. Elegance as defined by May is "simplicity found on the other side of complexity." The chief executive officer for JetBlue defined innovation as "trying to figure out a way to do something better than it's ever been done before." Innovation is solving the problem of how to do something better and this closely aligns itself with TRIZ, which is about solving problems. "

Over the years there has been an increasing call for understanding, measuring and managing value ... more Over the years there has been an increasing call for understanding, measuring and managing value of IT in the overall business context. Increasing adoption of IT with its ever expanding influence on what the enterprises can do with new technological pieces has increased the value of IT to such an extent that most enterprises now regard IT as central to their business strategy. However, in the world driven by measurement and quantitative financial benefits, value of IT has remained in the realms of perception. The problems lie in a not so overt connection between IT adoption and direct business benefits. This paper describes a framework for measuring the impact of various IT initiatives using the well-established balanced score card (BSC). Since IT measurement has expanded into measuring IT value and alignment with enterprise vision the framework described here uses the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to establish the linkages between IT initiatives and enterprise vision as reflected in the BSC. Further there is a need to include judgments of multiple stakeholders for which this framework provides a structured approach for generating consensus.

Once it is described, ideality is defined as function achieved without cost and with no negative impact on the system. Typically this trigger leads to strong solutions whereby the system achieves the desired function on its own – may be through the use of existing resources. Defining ideality in such terms for software products is inherently difficult due to evolutionary nature of the software systems. It is rarely the case that software system remains to the confines of functions that it was initially designed for. Invariably a software system evolves through addition of multiple functions or capabilities throughout its life. In fact, the graceful degradation of performance specific to the existing function of an evolving software system is more of a norm rather than exception. Further, it is really the evolution of its structure that helps th...

The review work is commonly persuaded before patent drafting/filing or new novel research area or new business. Presently the review work is conducted based on journal publications, published patent documents, open web sites, etc. This review work typically depicts past innovations in technology or business. On the other hand Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) approach can help to map inventions in the past, present and future time frame. Further it can help to expand inventions at component level, sub-system level or system level. This helps to identify new opportunities, for science, technology, or business. In this paper we are analyzing prior publications in perfusion imaging by applying systematic approaches such as Patent Citation Analysis and TRIZ, to study the growth trends and explore new improvements. Next Generation Networks (NGN) are characterized by increasing complexity, intelligence, heterogeneous technologies, multitude of vendor products and increasing user expectations from the networks. Simple and empirical Network Management (NM) of the previous years was replaced by homogeneous standards using the Manager/Agent (Client/Server) approach proposed by International Standards Organization (ISO). Afterwards new principles of management by delegation, peer-to-peer management and Web-based approaches emerged. However, carrying out the Fault, Configuration, Accountmg, Performance and Security (FCAPS) functional areas for Network Management in NGN will require new approaches. In this paper, we have presented OpenVision Service Management System (OVSMS) based framework for the Next Generation Networks. OVSM...

The innovation crafting framework has been culled out of experiences of solving problems at strategic, operational and tactical levels in various domains of military, governance and business. It integrates different methodologies in a seamless manner to help structure the complete innovation life-cycle. These are the Scenario Planning, Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ), Edward de-bono’s Six Thinking Hats, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Dependency Structure Matrix (DSM). The key elements of the framework, various phases and relevant techniques are described in this paper. The paper also describes various case studies where the framework has yielded robust results.

Effective management of perishable goods is a major problem faced by the retailers of perishable ... more Effective management of perishable goods is a major problem faced by the retailers of perishable goods. TimeTemperature-Indicator (TTI) labels available today can indicate the remaining shelf life of these perishable products. The analysis shows that a retailer of perishable goods can reduce the losses suffered due to the expiry of perishable items before they can be sold, by more than 90% and increase the net profits by more than 10% in the test scenario. Thus we can conc...

This broad definition has “creation” as its key activity. When you are innovating the most prevalent form of activity that you will be involved in is “creation”. What will you be creating? You will be creating change. What change? The needed change. How will you create the needed change? It will be through ideas. What are ideas? Those thoughts that bring in genesis of change. How will you get those thoughts that brings in the genesis of change? Needed change, actually. What change is needed, when? That is the main question we need to answer.

Discovering, defining, describing, designing, developing, deploying, and deducing (7Ds) of CISS will have unprecedented demands, stresses, unknowable future impacts and failure potentials. Increasingly CISS will be safety, security, business or mission critical. CISS have substantial decentralization, higher embedded/ambient algorithmic intelligence, inherently conflicting, unknowable and diverse operational needs and requirements, continuous evolution, deployment and learning; heterogeneous, inconsistent, and changing elements and erosion of people-system boundary. We propose that antifragile mechanisms should be conceived, designed and built into these systems ab-initio. CISS lifecycle aspects including Value, Inventiveness, Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T), Computational Emergence, multi-level Design, Computational Engineering, Adaptive System Infrastructure, Adaptable and Predictable System Quality-need an integrative thinking framework. Classical thinking dimensions-Analytical, Logical, Value, Inventive, and Systems thinking (ALVIS) need to be synergized with the sixth wave of innovation dimensions of Scale, Computational, Algorithmic and Network (SCAN) thinking. We also speculate the emergence of a need of Quantum and Nano (QN) thinking within this decade. We propose and describe ALVIS-SCAN-QN thinking framework for 7Ds of CISS for achieving antifragile criticality (AFC).
