BIM (building information modelling) emerged and appeared as a means to store all relevant data generated during the life-cycle of the facilities. But this upstream view of the built environment, arising from the design and construction stages, extended to the downstream operations where building and industrial facilities appeared more and more as huge dynamic data producers and concentrators while being operated. This created new challenges leading to what is referred to as ISCs (intelligent and smart constructions). The current state of the art is that final constructions still contain various and increasingly versatile control and service systems, which are hardly standardised, and not interconnected among themselves. Monitoring, maintenance and services are done by specialised companies, each responsible of different systems, which are relying on customised software and techniques to meet specific user needs and are based on monolithic applications that require manual configuration for specific uses, maintenance and support. We demonstrate in this paper that the early promises of integration across the actors and along the lifetime of facilities have gone a long way but will only be delivered through enhanced standardisation of computerized models, representations, services and operations still not yet fully accomplished 25 years after work started.

We identify thirteen characteristic 'ICT-related' Trends which, together, have the potential to address the identified Priority Areas (Knowledge Management, Legal & Contractual Aspects Management, Quality & Performance Management, Total Life-cycle/Supply-chain Management and Human Aspects Management) and satisfy in our view all associated identified business process -related requirements of the various stakeholders identified in [ROADCON-D3]. These trends have been classified according to the "Change Level" dimension of the ROADCON Cube.

However, smart city projects should never be seen in isolation, but as one element in a city's (or a region's) continuous effort to find the next best way of operations. This paper evaluates the problems associated with the systems development of Agile technical practices for developing IoT solutions for sustainable urban environments. As part of this analysis; this paper investigates the traditional methods of generic lifecycle stages; iteration and recursion, sequential methods, and incremental and iterative methods for developing urban informatics. The functional design of a distributed automated system architecture is presented based on the theory that team members such as software engineers, data specialists, security engineers, testers, and other specialists need to be self-organized and embrace the certainty of failure. The authors' identify that by using Agile techniques to decrease fear of failure and embrace the notion that the goal should be to experiment constantly, fail early and often, and learn as much as possible in the process can produce a more integrated service. The end result is a hybrid model presented as part of a process analysis practice for IV&V in order to develop value added solutions for Smart Cities.

This infrastructure must rest on new emerging technology for product modelling (e.g. STEP), remote access to information through distributed infrastructures (e.g. CORBA), and the WWW with all its de facto standards. This paper aims at investigating the integration of STEP, CORBA and Virtual Reality technology for the computer support of the future VE. The proposed approach relies on STEP information models, on a middleware supported by an Object Request Broker as introduced in the CORBA specification for distribution purpose, and WWW facility for shared 3D viewing services. The use of this infrastructure is illustrated through the distribution of STEP-based geometrical product instances in order to provide 3D viewing of objects previously designed under a CAD tool in a shadow simulation of an industrial building construction project sufficient enough to appreciate the benefits of technology like STEP, CORBA and the WWW in the deployment of concurrent engineering within future manufacturing processes. This work has been partially undertaken in the context of the VEGA project 1 .

The requirement attributes of FP7 “Topic 6.5 Information Communication Technology (ICT) for energy positive neighborhoods ‘Open Dynamic System for Saving Energy in Urban Spaces (ODYSSEUS) is the main research focus of this paper. The paper outlines the projects objectives in three levels; 1) Operational – developing an open dynamic system to enable “holistic energy management” services for urban areas, 2) Strategic – focusing on four key goals; integration scenarios, open integration platform, holistic energy management and validation, and 3) Physical - design a solution space architecture “dynamic Energy Profile Card (dEPC)” that will be used to support the holistic energy management system and sensor applications configured by the following interoperable services; 3D Geospatial Information System (GIS), Web technology, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Device Profile for Web Services (DPWS) and rule-based optimization engines featuring Genetic Algorithms (GA). Overall, this paper will analyze the various techniques that will be undertaken to support the quality requirements for verifying and validating the ODYSSEUS projects objectives.

The final educational component of 'assessment' is the main focus of this paper. The authors will seek to demonstrate the various purposes of assessment through utilizing the visual, parametric and cross-discipline coordination attributes of Building Information Modeling on a Construction Management module. The principle objectives of this paper is to identify both the challenges of assessing students in a real-time learning environment and emphasize the benefits of constructing a virtual model designed to harmonize the learning outcomes. The theory of assessment is based on the process of evaluating how much the student knows in order, to form judgments which, in turn, are to be used in decision making. The technique used to investigate student learning difficulties and improve the educators teaching methods was reflected in observation as a necessary tool to increase the validity and reliability of the assessment procedures. Through providing a BIM model based on intelligent object architecture and shared information (collaboration) the findings of this paper highlights the positive student driven learning path which, in turn, improves the teacher's feedback analysis.
