Introduction to the temporary exhibition in the new museum of Aigai

It is, in fact, a typical quarry of limestone which during the second half of the 4th c. BC was converted to a sanctuary or the Nymphs. There is a strong chance that this is the area which the residents of Mieza of the 2nd c. AD correlated with the most glorious times of their city, though the historical facts indicate that the pupillage in Mieza for Alexander and the scions of the Macedonians was not an era of leisure and idyllic walks contrariwise a period of intense pupillage and hard practice of body and mind, in order to become competent to lead men in battle and staff the offices of the kingdom. The training of young people in the Greek cities is provided in the gymnasiums, the fighting arenas (palaistrai) and the stadiums that people begin to organize during these times, with a clear typical architectural development with the stoas (covered porticos) and colonnades, areas for training, baths, restaurants, etc. Regardless of the charm of the area it is clear that in Nymphaion there have never been such constructions. There have been else-where though, in the plain, northeast of the theatre, in an area quite close by, though outside the ancient city of Mieza. A building complex has been identified here, covering an area of about 35.000 m2. In the northwest side a very large (about 4000m2) perysyle was located, including twin androns, oblong platforms, areas of various uses and generous provision of water that can be identified as a palaistra,
while lengthwise to its north side, on a lower level a stoa of 600 feet is developed, the so called “xystos”, a typical feature of the gymnasiums of the era. The findings of the excavations and the similarities to the palace of Aigai provide us with a dating of the complex in the beginning of the second half of the 4th c. BC, while the uncommonly large size and luxury or the whole body strongly suggest a connection with Philipp II. If that is
the case, then this must be the royal gymnasium, where the scions of Macedonians gathered in 343 BC, the area where Aristotle educated Alexander and the people destined to change the world. And it is obviously not at all coincidental the space correlation of the complex of the gymnasium with the appearing theatre and the royal palace of Aigai. Having embraced the Platonic dictates, ac-cording to which the outstanding education is the only guarantee for the optimal governance, Philipp II becomes a great benefactor and donor, launching the
model that will be followed by the Hellenistic rulers and invites Aristotle, the most distinguished philosopher and scientist or the era, to take over the administration of his gymnasium, thus creating the ultimate model for the education of the ruler and the nobles.

Τhe central unit (New Museum) of the Polycentric Museum of Aigai is in the final phase of its completion and it will open for the public in the next months. Believing, that the museum of Aigai, the royal metropolis of Macedon, can and should open new paths in the approach and research of antiquity and particulary that of the Hellenistic Oikoumene, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Imathia with the cooperation and assistance of leading experts and scholars from the world's most important universities and research institutes prepared and organized a major international conference. Sixty renowned researchers will present fifty six papers summing up their research from May 27 to June 2, 2022 at the New Museum of Aigai.
Entitled: "Beyond Macedonia. The multifaceted Hellenistic Oikoumene reconsidered" the conference focuses on the investigation of complex phenomena such as the economy, the architecture and the landscaping, the evolution of artistic and cultural trends, but also on the presentation of syntheses of excavations and findings in the vast Hellenistic world, from Pakistan to the western Mediterranean. Our intention is to enable the presentation of different approaches and of new scientific methods.

The new ideas and trends that defined thw course of the Hellenistic world over time generated in the environment of Philip II and left priceless traces in thw soil of Aigai.
Thus, the initiative of the John S. Latsis Public Foundation tales on special significance, as this book provides the opportunity -30 years after the fascinating first publication of Manolis Andronicos' discovery of the royal treasures- to present for the first time, to the public and experts alike, all the finds revealed during the enormous task of restoring the palace, to the royal tombs that have come to light just this year (2013). These finds consolidate the picture, confirming the initial identification, while at the same time paving the way for an overall re-assessment of the Macedonians' contribution to Greece and to civilisation.

In the form of an ancient tumulus and encasing the monuments, this Museum-Mausoleum is dedicated to the memory of illustrious historical figures familiar to all.
The Guide to the Museum of the Royal Tombs takes the reader step by step on the tour of this particularly spare and austere, yet simultaneously atmospheric exhibition of the treasures from these tombs, as these are displayed in units. Impressive photographs amplify the interesting historical information and the presentation of the exhibits, transporting the visitor through space and time, in the footsteps of the remarkable flowering of culture in the land of Macedon, during Classical Antiquity.

A new museum in Greece raises questions about the arc of ancient history—and the legacies of empire
..... As a panel in the new museum puts it, Alexander’s expeditions “would transform the age-old clash between Europe and Asia into the most creative synthesis and coexistence of cultures that the world had ever seen”.
