In 2006, the leading brand in the travelling clocks’market Seiko wished to refurbish it supply, in order to adpat it to suit new typologies of cutomers.
The travelling clocks’market is mostly masculine, classic and conventional. Thus, the main issue of the study has been to find new lines of interest for that kind of product. We wished to anticipate the expectations of the usual customers, which are generally functional aspects: precision and reliability of the mechanisms, efficiency of the displays, easiness.
Our first thinks quickly established that a strictly aesthetic design research could not arrive at a satisfying and well-founded product. This is why we decided to adopt a semiotic approach: give an original meaning to that daily object, associate new motions with it use. Our design team defined several user types. For each one of them, a concept has been imagined, that conveyed a particular way of life and a specific connexion between the user and his object.
By introducing rarely used materials, combining surprising colors and patterns, playing with original shapes and proportions, we especially expressed the sense of touch. A particular research has also been made about the way to use the clock. We used the innovation not only in the traditional features, but in a poetic, symbolic or emotinal approach.
The sensuous aspect quickly took the advantage on the aesthetic one. This permited us to propose original and well-founded solutions, giving a both human and technical view, simple but full of new meanings.
