AKSADUL ALAM
Professor of History, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

I joined the University of Dhaka as a lecturer in 1999 and became a professor in 2016. I graduated with a degree in history from the same university and obtained my Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India, in 2011. My dissertation focused on the broader theme of the geographical factors in the history of early Bengal.

I have authored and edited seven research books and published 45 scholarly articles in academic journals both in Bangladesh and internationally. Additionally, I have presented research papers at numerous international conferences and seminars in countries such as the USA, Belgium, Japan, Norway, Italy, Thailand, Nepal, India, and Bangladesh.

My research interests include:
- Historical Geography (Bengal/Bangladesh/South Asia);
- The search for the identity of Bengal/Bangladesh;
- Assimilation processes and syncretic traditions in Bengal;
- Religious Processes in Bengal and relevant theories;
- Connectivity issues between Bengal and surrounding regions during the ancient and medieval periods; and
- Institutional history.

I have received fellowships from various organizations, including the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), South and Southeast Asian Studies Research (SSEASR), and the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India, as well as grants and awards from the World History Association (WHA) in the USA, the International Centre for Bangladesh Studies (ICBS) in Japan, and the International Centre for the Study of Bengal Art (ICSBA) in Bangladesh.

In recognition of my contributions to academia, I was honored with the UGC Gold Medal Award in 2017 by the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Dean’s Award in 2018 by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Dhaka. We cannot advance if we do not critically examine existing knowledge. Keeping this fundamental principle in mind, this paper will focus on a challenging theme in South Asian history: the socio-cultural traditions, assimilative processes, and changes through continuities in the eastern part of the Indian Subcontinent, specifically Bengal, from the 5th to the 13th century AD. Many commonly held views about the ancient past of Bengal require critical interpretation, as our understanding of the past is central to comprehending the present.

This theme arises from several reasons, questions, and perspectives. For example, why is it important to establish a theoretical basis for studying geographical factors in early Bengal history? What challenges might arise when writing such a history without clearly defining the geographical features of a specific territory or region? Is it true that historians are influenced by personal biases when investigating the past, shaping how they select and present specific facts to tell their “chosen story”? Why do societies, cultures, or religions depict their past in certain ways while overlooking diversities and pluralities?

This research will investigate the processes of cultural change and transformation in the history of Bengal up to AD-1300, with special attention to the challenges encountered during this process and an examination of the existing historiography commonly studied in Bangladesh.

বাংলা এবং দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়ার মূল ভূ-খণ্ড, সমুদ্র উপকূলবর্তী এলাকা ও দ্বীপপুঞ্জের মধ্যেকার ঐতিহ... more বাংলা এবং দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়ার মূল ভূ-খণ্ড, সমুদ্র উপকূলবর্তী এলাকা ও দ্বীপপুঞ্জের মধ্যেকার ঐতিহাসিক সংযোগ এবং অঞ্চল দুটির বাণিজ্যিক ও সাংস্কৃতিক সম্পর্ক সুপ্রাচীন। কয়েক প্রজন্মের ইতিহাসবিদ ও প্রত্নতত্ত্ববিদগণ বিষয়টির উপর আলোকপাত করে চলেছেন। অঞ্চল দু'টির ভৌগোলিক নৈকট্য এই সংযোগ-সম্পর্কের অন্যতম প্রধান কারণ। এ-নৈকট্যের সুযোগে বাংলা স্থলপথ এবং জলপথ ব্যবহারের মাধ্যমে খুব সহজেই দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়ার সঙ্গে বাণিজ্যিক এবং সাংস্কৃতিক লেনদেনের এক ধারাবাহিক সম্পর্ক স্থাপনে সক্ষম হয়েছে। এমনকি দক্ষিণ এশিয়া এবং দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়ার মূল ভূ-খণ্ড ও সমুদ্র উপকূলবর্তী এলাকা ও দ্বীপপুঞ্জের মধ্যে বিদ্যমান প্রাচীন যোগাযোগ সম্পর্কের একটি অন্যতম প্রধান দ্বার হিসেবেও যে বাংলা ভূ-খণ্ড/অঞ্চল কার্যকর ভূমিকা পালন করে চলেছে তার যথেষ্ট সাক্ষ্য-প্রমাণ পাওয়া যায়। বর্তমান প্রবন্ধে এ-সংক্রান্ত আলোচনার পাশাপাশি দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়ার 'ভারতীয়করণ' অথবা দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়াকে 'বৃহত্তর ভারত’ হিসেবে আখ্যা প্রদানের আধিপত্যবাদী প্রপঞ্চগুলি বি-নির্মাণ (deconstruction) এবং এ-সংক্রান্ত অ্যাকাডেমিক আলোচনায় বাংলার সংযোগ/সম্পর্ক বিষয়ে মন্তব্য করা হবে..

It is evident that both the territorial terms were used indiscriminately in different sources and sometimes both are mentioned together. The geographical meaning of these two terms could not have remained unchanged through the ages. Scholars claimed that 'Vanga' was the leading territorial term with dynamic character of its own that have played an important role in shaping 'Bengal' as a historical geographical unit at her early days. Viewed from this perspective, it might be an interesting study to revisit 'Vanga' and 'Vangala' to conduct an analysis of existing and newly discovered sources, their historical implications for proper understanding of their location and roles in the making of the territorial/ regional Bengal as an entity in the ancient period.

This research examines the historical journey toward nationhood taken by the people in the easter... more This research examines the historical journey toward nationhood taken by the people in the easternmost part of the Indian Subcontinent. This journey began in ancient Vanga and established independent Bangladesh in 1971. Popular narratives surrounding the emergence of Bangladesh overlook this long journey and fail to adopt a broader perspective on the formation of the nation-state that ultimately became Bangladesh. The path to Bangladesh traversed various historical milestones, navigating numerous challenges. While dynasties and empires played significant roles in shaping the politics and governance of the region, the ordinary people had the most profound impact on the formation, growth, and development of the nation over time. However, with the establishment of this nation-state, certain groups lost parts of their historical, cultural, and political experiences that they had shared with others in the geographical region of Bengal for thousands of years. This research highlights this phenomenon as well.

Bengal is one of the most distinctive regions in the world, with unique geophysical features that significantly affect the vibrant and diverse economic patterns of its inhabitants. The region's hydrography and environment have shaped the activities of its people, influencing both their economic and cultural practices. In ancient times, Bengal was covered by dense jungles and forests. Through the dedicated efforts of early settlers, the land was gradually transformed into cultivated areas, marking the beginning of economic life in the region. The contemporary economy of Bengal is a result of thousands of years of economic activities carried out by its people. Thus, this research provides an overview of the formative phase of Bengal's economic and commercial life, alongside an exploration of present-day Bangladesh.

This paper examines the geographical factors in early Bengal's 'syncretistic tradition,' a largel... more This paper examines the geographical factors in early Bengal's 'syncretistic tradition,' a largely unexplored area. Scholars agree that pre-Vedic and non-Brahmanic influences were integral to deltaic Bengal's culture. The late arrival of Brahmanical orthodoxy, influenced by geographical distance from traditional entry routes, allowed Bengal's unique pre-Vedic culture to flourish. Unlike central Gangetic India, where change was resisted, Bengal's inhabitants selectively accepted external elements, fostering compromise and synthesis.

The initial phase of 'Brahmanical accommodation of local culture' took place between the 4th century BC and the 4th century AD, with Brahmanical influence diminishing as it moved east. By the time it reached Bengal, the region's existing cultural fabric had already intertwined with incoming influences, creating a distinct socio-religious identity.

The syncretistic tradition in early Bengal blended Brahmanism, Buddhism, and Islam with local pre-Vedic characteristics, resulting in unique religious cultures. This influences the ongoing connection with non-Brahmanic goddesses, with roots traceable to the early 2nd millennium AD. Thus, the 'Brahmanical assimilative process' played a crucial role in shaping Bengal's regional culture, warranting further investigation into how it contributed to developing a distinct socio-religious life in this deltaic region.

Th... more 'Bengal' is more of a historical entity than a clearly defined territorial or regional entity. This paper is an attempt to indicate a separate 'unit' within Bengal in geographical terms and identify the factors that create the difference. By using ancient available sources, the paper illustrates how this geographical 'Bengal' gradually developed into historical-geographical sub-units or sub-regions where separate territorial consciousness started creating separate politics and polity in the ancient period. The paper revisited some of these territorial sub-units to shed light on an indication that Southeast Bengal gradually transformed into an individual 'entity' in terms of distinct political and cultural ethos, geographical connectivity, and trade and commercial linkages with the lands beyond her territory.

Indian intelligentsia developed all these counter-hegemonic academic notions against the colonial construction that India, in her early days, was an ‘uncivilized land of savagery’, and the British came to this land with a mission of civilizing India. However, the approaches of the ‘nationalist’ scholars ultimately boasted of the ‘cultural imperialism’ of India over Southeast Asia. And the megalomaniac notion of Pax Britannica became a counter-hegemonic Pax Indica. Thus, the paper sheds light on the academic ‘scramble’ over the issue of designating Southeast Asia as an ‘extended sphere of influence’ or ‘cultural colony’ of either India or China and offers a reinterpretation of early connectivity issues and cultural interactions between these regions by using a geographic lens with special reference to the geographical-cultural territory of Bengal.

In South Asian history, this period has been considered the time when significant socio-cultural transformations took place and regions in the subcontinent were molded into distinct contours. These changes and dynamics lead to socio-cultural formations at a later age. Bengal was one of these geographical regions where distinct geographical features made it a 'cultural territory' in the given chronological bracket. Therefore, the paper aims to bring together the variety of data available in the sources and highlight the contributions of geography in aspects of socio-cultural trends in early Bengal.

Why do societies, cultures, or religions depict their past in certain ways while overlooking diversities and pluralities?

This research will investigate the processes of cultural change and transformation in the history of Bengal up to AD-1300, with special attention to the challenges encountered during this process and an examination of the existing historiography commonly studied in Bangladesh.

It is evident that both the territorial terms were used indiscriminately in different sources and sometimes both are mentioned together. The geographical meaning of these two terms could not have remained unchanged through the ages. Scholars claimed that 'Vanga' was the leading territorial term with dynamic character of its own that have played an important role in shaping 'Bengal' as a historical geographical unit at her early days. Viewed from this perspective, it might be an interesting study to revisit 'Vanga' and 'Vangala' to conduct an analysis of existing and newly discovered sources, their historical implications for proper understanding of their location and roles in the making of the territorial/ regional Bengal as an entity in the ancient period.

This research examines the historical journey toward nationhood taken by the people in the easter... more This research examines the historical journey toward nationhood taken by the people in the easternmost part of the Indian Subcontinent. This journey began in ancient Vanga and established independent Bangladesh in 1971. Popular narratives surrounding the emergence of Bangladesh overlook this long journey and fail to adopt a broader perspective on the formation of the nation-state that ultimately became Bangladesh. The path to Bangladesh traversed various historical milestones, navigating numerous challenges. While dynasties and empires played significant roles in shaping the politics and governance of the region, the ordinary people had the most profound impact on the formation, growth, and development of the nation over time. However, with the establishment of this nation-state, certain groups lost parts of their historical, cultural, and political experiences that they had shared with others in the geographical region of Bengal for thousands of years. This research highlights this phenomenon as well.

Bengal is one of the most distinctive regions in the world, with unique geophysical features that significantly affect the vibrant and diverse economic patterns of its inhabitants. The region's hydrography and environment have shaped the activities of its people, influencing both their economic and cultural practices. In ancient times, Bengal was covered by dense jungles and forests. Through the dedicated efforts of early settlers, the land was gradually transformed into cultivated areas, marking the beginning of economic life in the region. The contemporary economy of Bengal is a result of thousands of years of economic activities carried out by its people. Thus, this research provides an overview of the formative phase of Bengal's economic and commercial life, alongside an exploration of present-day Bangladesh.

This paper examines the geographical factors in early Bengal's 'syncretistic tradition,' a largel... more This paper examines the geographical factors in early Bengal's 'syncretistic tradition,' a largely unexplored area. Scholars agree that pre-Vedic and non-Brahmanic influences were integral to deltaic Bengal's culture. The late arrival of Brahmanical orthodoxy, influenced by geographical distance from traditional entry routes, allowed Bengal's unique pre-Vedic culture to flourish. Unlike central Gangetic India, where change was resisted, Bengal's inhabitants selectively accepted external elements, fostering compromise and synthesis.

The initial phase of 'Brahmanical accommodation of local culture' took place between the 4th century BC and the 4th century AD, with Brahmanical influence diminishing as it moved east. By the time it reached Bengal, the region's existing cultural fabric had already intertwined with incoming influences, creating a distinct socio-religious identity.

The syncretistic tradition in early Bengal blended Brahmanism, Buddhism, and Islam with local pre-Vedic characteristics, resulting in unique religious cultures. This influences the ongoing connection with non-Brahmanic goddesses, with roots traceable to the early 2nd millennium AD. Thus, the 'Brahmanical assimilative process' played a crucial role in shaping Bengal's regional culture, warranting further investigation into how it contributed to developing a distinct socio-religious life in this deltaic region.

Th... more 'Bengal' is more of a historical entity than a clearly defined territorial or regional entity. This paper is an attempt to indicate a separate 'unit' within Bengal in geographical terms and identify the factors that create the difference. By using ancient available sources, the paper illustrates how this geographical 'Bengal' gradually developed into historical-geographical sub-units or sub-regions where separate territorial consciousness started creating separate politics and polity in the ancient period. The paper revisited some of these territorial sub-units to shed light on an indication that Southeast Bengal gradually transformed into an individual 'entity' in terms of distinct political and cultural ethos, geographical connectivity, and trade and commercial linkages with the lands beyond her territory.

The paper focuses on one of the ‘popular’ academic discourses of ‘Indianisation,’ ‘Hinduisation’,... more The paper focuses on one of the ‘popular’ academic discourses of ‘Indianisation,’ ‘Hinduisation’, or ‘Sanskritisation’ of Southeast Asia. Indian intelligentsia developed all these counter-hegemonic academic notions against the colonial construction that India, in her early days, was an ‘uncivilized land of savagery’, and the British came to this land with a mission of civilizing India. However, the approaches of the ‘nationalist’ scholars ultimately boasted of the ‘cultural imperialism’ of India over Southeast Asia. And the megalomaniac notion of Pax Britannica became a counter-hegemonic Pax Indica. Thus, the paper sheds light on the academic ‘scramble’ over the issue of designating Southeast Asia as an ‘extended sphere of influence’ or ‘cultural colony’ of either India or China and offers a reinterpretation of early connectivity issues and cultural interactions between these regions by using a geographic lens with special reference to the geographical-cultural territory of Bengal.

In South Asian history, this period has been considered the time when significant socio-cultural transformations took place and regions in the subcontinent were molded into distinct contours. These changes and dynamics lead to socio-cultural formations at a later age. Bengal was one of these geographical regions where distinct geographical features made it a 'cultural territory' in the given chronological bracket. Therefore, the paper aims to bring together the variety of data available in the sources and highlight the contributions of geography in aspects of socio-cultural trends in early Bengal.
