This study shows that synaptic strength increases as a function of distance from the soma, indicating that there is a form of 'distance-dependent scaling' of synaptic strength in hippocampal neurons. This might compensate for reduced synaptic efficacy as a function of electrotonic distance from the spike-initiation zone.

This study indicates that, in neocortical neurons, synaptic strength does not increase as a function of distance from the soma. This is in contrast to experiments in hippocampal neurons (see reference 106).
