Abstract: In last years in the fertile coastal area of Motril-Carchuna, problems of harvest losses due to the death of various horticultural plants from diseases of the stem and roots caused by soil-borne fungi have incremented. The preliminary analyses of the root zone of the diseased plants of tomato, cucumber, beans and capsicums revealed the presence of Phytophthora spp.Using water artificially contaminated by inoculation of isolated Pythium spp. and Phytophthora spp. produced a higher death percentage and a lower yield than when the irrigation water was not inoculated. Sodium hypochlorite has shown good results as an irrigation water disinfectant, reducing plant death and increasing yield.
