Dominance and Submission in American Culture

Orleans, Massachusetts, United States

I first became interested in the dominance/submission dynamic as a college student in Gender Studies. Society and relationships consist of complimentary opposites, a working system that establishes defined roles within a given circumstance. Our tendency toward dominance or submission is the way in which we express ourselves on a daily basis, whether it is in the bedroom, the work world, politics, or personal relationships. Often times our roles change and differ depending on the situation. This community is to discuss your ideas and thoughts relating to dominance and submission in American culture, the good, the bad, and the ugly. How do sex and gender play a part? How does the structure of America perpetuate inequality? And are there any pros to dominant and submissive roles?

Rules:
This is a community for intelligent conversation and unique insight. I encourage all of you to share your thoughts, ideas, experiences, and observations. I am not opposed to sexual language and concepts, however, this is not a place to "hook up" or express offensive perversion. Please keep all posts relevant to the subject matter. Also, I encourage debate, but will not tolerate discrimination and/or blatant cruelty in this community. Thanks!
