Technology has brought about new knowledge forms in all aspects of human life. The new forms of k... more Technology has brought about new knowledge forms in all aspects of human life. The new forms of knowledge have transformed not only human lives but also human ways of doing things. Education has also benefited from technological transformation which is witnessed through the delivery of teaching and reception of learning with technology. The use of technology in teaching has been a fundamental theme in the 21st century as the world tends towards the fourth industrial revolution. Using Bourdieu's social theory, this paper seeks to gain an understanding of how the use of technology is impacted by the social context of language lecturers. This study aimed to investigate how language lecturers' social context influences their use of technology in teaching African languages. To pursue the above aim, an in-depth interview was conducted with 8 language lecturers across 3 universities in KwaZulu-Natal using stratified and snowball sampling methods. This study analyses lecturers' social context regarding technology use in teaching. It also examines the value lecturers place on technology for teaching African languages. Finally, it provides recommendations for lecturers and stakeholders to effectively implement technology for teaching African languages within the social context of language lecturers.

Post-apartheid policies aimed to promote African languages in higher education, yet lecturers fac... more Post-apartheid policies aimed to promote African languages in higher education, yet lecturers face lack of institutional support and resource scarcity. This qualitative study explores experiences of African language lecturers at South African universities, using Bourdieusian theory to understand broader discourses around language, identity, and power shaping efforts to revalue these languages. In-depth interviews were conducted to gain insights into lecturers' journeys and lived experiences. The findings revealed that their habitus was oriented towards language teaching by familial, socio-political, and educational contexts. In addition, accumulating cultural capital through credentials facilitated academic lecturers’ progression while leveraging social capital through professional networks provided them crucial access and advocacy. Within competitive academia, lecturers continuously pursued prestigious positions and various forms of capital. Collaborating with language communities enabled developing localized, culturally validating pedagogies to counter institutional barriers. Technology access empowered effective role performance, research publishing, and career advancement. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by African language lecturers and highlights the need for institutional support, resource availability, and community engagement to promote and sustain African language education in higher education institutions.

The effectiveness of vaccination programs against infectious illnesses is threatened by the evolu... more The effectiveness of vaccination programs against infectious illnesses is threatened by the evolution of vaccine resistance, which poses a severe danger to international public health initiatives. Conventional methods of addressing vaccine resistance have frequently been constrained by their onedimensional emphasis, which ignores the intricate interactions between biological, epidemiological, and sociocultural elements influencing the development of resistance. In response, this research supports a multi-criteria strategy that incorporates several viewpoints and standards to comprehend and manage vaccination resistance fully. Five strategies-provider-patient communication, health education campaigns, social media campaigns, community outreach initiatives, and influencer partnerships-are incorporated into the framework. Ten criteria are employed to evaluate these strategies: impact, resistance to misinformation, inclusivity, penetration, community engagement, and facilitation of dialogue, credibility, establishment of trust, resource demands, and adaptability. The CRITIC method is utilized to ascertain the relative significance of each criterion, whereas the CoCoSo and TOPSIS methods are employed to prioritize the strategies according to their appropriateness. As indicated by the findings, the criterion of vaccine effectiveness holds the greatest significance, with trust and credibility following suit. It is determined that health education campaigns are the most effective approach to tackle vaccine hesitancy, whereas influencer partnerships are deemed to be the least effective.

The interactions among linguistic obstacles, cultural and religious beliefs, and historical elements that lead to vaccine hesitancy among Nigeria's many ethnic groups are examined in this review article. It analyzes the decision-making processes and information needs of Nigerian parents regarding childhood vaccinations. The article evaluates the effectiveness of existing vaccine promotion interventions and communication strategies, highlighting successes, limitations, and areas for improvement. By consolidating research findings, the review aims to inform the development of culturally appropriate and context-specific approaches to address vaccine hesitancy and enhance vaccine uptake in Nigeria. Recommendations emphasize formative research, community engagement, capacity building for healthcare workers, and the strategic use of diverse communication channels to reach diverse populations with tailored vaccination information and support.

Representation and inclusion have become pressing issues in recent years, as systemic biases resu... more Representation and inclusion have become pressing issues in recent years, as systemic biases resulting in the underrepresentation of certain groups continue to be revealed in scholarly publishing. This paper presents strategies that have been implemented by the African Journal of Inter/Multidisciplinary Studies (AJIMS) to promote equity and diversify its authorship, reviewers, editors, and the research published in the journal. Specifically, the paper discusses how targeted recruitment of reviewers and intentional diversification of the AJIMS editorial board have brought traditionally excluded voices into the journal's editorial decision-making processes. Additionally, the paper highlights how special issues, targeted calls for papers, and an articulated values/practices statement have shaped the focus and values of the research published in AJIMS. While these strategies have the potential to make scholarly publishing more representative of diversity while upholding quality standards, the paper argues that systemic change necessitates commitment at all levels. In conclusion, the paper emphasizes that lasting inclusive practices require the dedication of all stakeholders such as authors, editors, reviewers, publishers, professional societies, and the wider research community engaged with scholarly publishing.

Protests in Nigeria have gained global attention in recent times and have attracted different exp... more Protests in Nigeria have gained global attention in recent times and have attracted different explanations about their root causes. Violence may sometimes erupt because of protests; however, this does not usually happen until additional factors contribute to the protests. This study presents a Social Network Theory perspective on the agitation for #EndSARS among the Nigerian masses, especially the youths. #EndSARS is a movement against extrajudicial police brutality and a call to put an end to bad governance in Nigeria. This study was inspired by the following: (i) the rising popularity of social media in the present day; (ii) the worldwide increase in social media activism; and (iii) the diffusion of information by social media users. This study therefore employed the Social Network Theory in identifying the influence of social media on the diffusion of information about the #EndSARS movement and the sustenance of this movement over a long period, despite forces that have tried to silence the movement. This study argued that the sustenance of protests such as #EndSARS over a long period was dependent on factors such as: (i) that some individuals were more resistant to being influenced than others; (ii) that some individuals tended to be more responsive than others; and (iii) that some individuals seemed to be more affected than others (and were therefore more likely to pass information on to others). The findings revealed that protesters used emotional dynamics, collective identities, symbolic artefacts, and mutual values to sustain protests if their demands were not met on time.

This study examines vaccine hesitancy as an emerging public health concern that undermines the ef... more This study examines vaccine hesitancy as an emerging public health concern that undermines the efficacy of vaccination initiatives. Healthcare providers play a crucial role in addressing vaccine hesitancy; however, many lack effective communication strategies. This study developed evidence-based communication guidelines to assist healthcare providers in discussing vaccines with hesitant patients. Drawing on Bourdieu's theoretical framework, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten vaccine-hesitant parents and ten paediatricians in Nigeria. Through reflexive thematic analysis of the interview transcripts, this study uncovers power dynamics, legitimacy struggles, and cultural capital's significance in vaccine conversations. The findings reveal that hesitant parents question the legitimacy of vaccine recommendations, feeling marginalised yet constrained by societal norms of responsible parenthood. Similarly, healthcare providers' reliance on biomedical expertise often proves insufficient without rapport building, cultural competency, and addressing patients' unique knowledge assets. The findings of this study contribute to communication theory, medical education, and clinical practice by advocating for power-conscious, dialogue-based strategies to promote vaccination amidst uncertainty and scepticism.

Over the last few years, the publishing industry has experienced significant changes and developm... more Over the last few years, the publishing industry has experienced significant changes and developments, most of which have had a positive influence on scholarly publishing. For instance, the gradual popularity of open access publishing has contributed to the wider access and readership of published materials. Also, the recent development in the abilities of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to assist in the publication process is laudable for its potential. The gradual shift from print to online publication is also a commendable development in global publishing. Not without their own challenges, these developments, among others, have mostly impacted global publishing in a positive way. In the current study, the researchers' argument stems from the notion that although these developments are invaluable, there are accompanying impediments that publishing professionals as well as publishing outlets must consider. In response to these developments, role-players in the publishing industry must constantly reassess their publishing processes in order to carefully manage and negotiate what is termed by this study as a 'double-edged sword' (capable of having positive and negative consequences). This study reviews existing studies, draws views from publishing experts, and seeks opinions from scholars to establish methods of negotiating some of the key developments in global publishing.

This study examined the role of supervisors in supporting postgraduate students from the students... more This study examined the role of supervisors in supporting postgraduate students from the students' perspective. Through interviews with postgraduate students at two universities, the research aimed to understand how students perceive and experience guidance from their supervisors. The factors examined included meeting frequency, feedback, and guidance received by students from supervisors. The analysis identified strengths in supervisory support in these areas, as well as areas needing improvement. Results indicated quality feedback and regular communication had the greatest positive impact. However, many students desired more hands-on help with methodology and writing. The study recommends supervisor training programs focused on writing guidance and supervision skills. By implementing such programs, universities can enable supervisors to provide optimal student support, thereby improving experiences and outcomes. This research provides key insights into strengthening student-supervisor relationships.

This study investigates the motivations and thought processes behind grammar avoidance in senior ... more This study investigates the motivations and thought processes behind grammar avoidance in senior high school second language (L2) English learners during grammar learning. Twelve suburban public school intermediate proficiency L2 English learners were selected. Data was collected through qualitative semistructured interviews and thematically analyzed. Using Bourdieu's sociological theory, the following themes emerged from the data analysis: (i) Strategic Simplification: Navigating Linguistic Capital and Habitus for Effective Communication, (ii) Strategic Avoidance: Navigating Complex Sociolinguistic Forces to Optimize Communication, (iii) Managing Perceived Communication Risk, and (iv) Strategic Avoidance as Temporary Adaptation: Ambivalent Linguistic Simplification. Cognitively, limited working memory hindered processing and producing complex syntax, while avoidance helped manage high cognitive load. Insufficient explicit grammatical knowledge also prevented consolidating new structures. Avoidance allowed time to acquire the declarative knowledge needed. The findings suggest grammar avoidance balances complexity and accuracy, motivated by affective and cognitive constraints. Implications include building confidence, knowledge, and skills to enable early practice with complex constructions rather than prolonged avoidance. The study recommends that further research is required to determining optimal thresholds for avoidance and levels of optimal challenge for introducing complex grammar.

Through this relationship, the supervisor facilitates the student's scholarly development. This study investigates supervisors' roles in supporting postgraduate students from the students' perspective. This study through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 12 doctoral and masters students at two universities seeks to investigate how postgraduate students perceive and undergo guidance from their supervisors. The factors analyzed include the role of networking and motivational supports provided by supervisors during postgraduate students' research journey. This study explores the ways supervisors provide career mentoring and networking to prepare students for postgraduate careers, and how they inspire and emotionally assist students through inherent research challenges. The findings identify strengths in supervisory support and areas needing enhancement. The findings indicate that many students desire more hands-on help with methodology and writing and career mentoring emerges as an area where postgraduate support falls short of expectations. The study recommends that supervisor trainings be provided for supervisors and intending ones, and such trainings should be focused on writing guidance, networking, advising and motivation. By implementing such programs, universities can empower supervisors to optimally assist students, thereby enhancing experiences and outcomes.

This study explored community attitudes toward home-based male caregivers for daycare children in... more This study explored community attitudes toward home-based male caregivers for daycare children in Ogbomoso, Nigeria. The aim was to understand perspectives on using male versus female caregivers. Respondents included equal numbers of married men and women aged 30-50 years old. The study asked about their willingness to use male caregivers, reasons behind their decision, expected impacts on children, and need for societal change. The study took place in Ogbomoso South and North Local Government of Nigeria, where 32 parents and prospective parents were surveyed about their attitudes toward home-based male caregivers for daycare children. A qualitative approach was used, with accidental sampling. Inductive thematic analysis elicited key themes shaping attitudes and norms. A prevalent theme was associating caregiving with inherent female capabilities and maternal duties - many felt women naturally provide superior nurturing and care while men lack these innate aptitudes. Alongside this was strong distrust of males with children, stemming from abuse and misconduct fears. However, some felt gender irrelevant, professing egalitarian ideals. But pursuing equality conflicted with lingering scepticism about men's care motivations. It's apparent that parents lack a framework for choosing caregivers yet choose for their children. Such a framework could help bridge the gender inequality gap in caregiving.

Technology has significantly influenced the educational field, including language teaching. Howev... more Technology has significantly influenced the educational field, including language teaching. However, some language instructors hold negative attitudes toward technology, particularly computer-assisted language teaching (CALT), which may affect the advancement of language teaching. This study examines the attitudes of language instructors toward CALT in some South African public universities and identifies sustainable lessons that could promote the use of CALT. The study employed a quantitative research approach using content analysis and surveys to comprehensively investigate language instructors’ attitudes toward CALT. Surveys provided the required information about the attitudes of language instructors toward CALT, and content analysis and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data and identify sustainable lessons from the attitudes of the language instructors toward CALT. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the survey results. The analysis revealed that some language instructors have negative attitudes toward CALT, suggesting that institutions require a fundamental approach to advance the use of CALT. Sustainable lessons learned from the attitudes of language instructors toward CALT are identified, and recommendations are made about how to implement effective CALT on a personal and institutional basis. This study highlights the importance of a positive attitude toward CALT and developing a fundamental approach to using CALT in language teaching. The sustainable lessons learned from this study could inform and advance language teaching practices that employ CALT, inform future research, and promote effective language teaching practices that use CALT.

The study is grounded in the Yoruba worldview, which frames retribution as essential for restoring cosmic and social equilibrium when moral norms are violated. The data analysis used textual analysis of Aníkúlápó’s narrative depictions of crime and punishment as insights into traditional Yoruba principles of retributive justice. The findings reveal that the movie accurately portrays customary public punishment processes in precolonial Yoruba society aimed at communal justice and harmony. Beliefs in supernatural forces dispensing divine retribution are also authentically represented. While punishments seek to deter crime and rehabilitate offenders, scholarly critiques note occasional unfairness and excess. Overall, the analysis of the movie illuminates the pivotal role of retribution in Yoruba's cultural identity and moral philosophy. The key themes in the study relate to retribution's links to cosmic balance, supernatural dimensions, and functions as deterrence and rehabilitation. By situating the analysis of Aníkúlápó within scholarship on African jurisprudence, the study elucidates Yoruba perspectives on fate, choice, proportionality, and pragmatism when responding to moral complexities and wrongdoing. This study contributes original humanistic insight into indigenous African philosophies of social harmony beyond punitive justice. This study recommends comparing diverse narratives and contemporary attitudes to enrich the understanding retribution's nuanced cultural significance.

This study investigates the cultural and linguistic aspects of politeness found in selected Yorub... more This study investigates the cultural and linguistic aspects of politeness found in selected Yoruba greetings within a short story that is taught to high school learners. To examine the politeness strategies used in Yoruba greetings, a simple textual analysis was employed. The concept of politeness considers greetings as significant in all human conversational interactions since they contribute to establishing and maintaining rapport between speakers. This study identifies several functions of greetings, including discourse initiation and termination, gap filling, solidarity, security and acceptance, courtesy and respect, and comradeship. Additionally, the study explores the social distance between interlocutors, the power dynamics between the speaker and the listener, and the formal relationships between them, which influence the specific types of politeness strategies employed. This research provides valuable insights into the behavioural characteristics and cultural values of Yoruba language speakers and individuals from other linguistic backgrounds worldwide.

This study sets out to explore the current Nigerian Higher Education Institution (HEI) curriculum... more This study sets out to explore the current Nigerian Higher Education Institution (HEI) curriculum and its relation to the notion of black consciousness. This study argues that for the curriculum of HEIs in Africa to be relevant to the notion of black consciousness, it should mirror the philosophies of Africa as a continent. The curriculum should mirror the lives of students of Africa and their learning needs at a particular place at a given time, not catering for the lives of students and the learning needs of students of other locations. To achieve this, a deliberate effort should be made to repudiate foreign philosophies and external behavioral patterns as they relate to curriculum development and the endorsement of traditionally accepted ways of thinking and acting in the process and execution of curriculum development activities. Nigeria HEI curriculum seems to mirror so much of the foreign philosophies rather than Nigerian native philosophies. However, the true relevance of this curriculum to the notion of black consciousness is still unclear. This study therefore explores the Nigerian HEI curriculum to date to consider the content thereof and to ascertain its relevance to the notion of black consciousness. This study adopts a historical and explorative design in describing the development of the Nigerian HEI curriculum. The finding of this study reveals that many influencing factors mitigate against the true relevance of the Nigerian HEI Curriculum to the notion of Black Consciousness. These mitigating factors includes culture, external influence (western influence), internal influence, political influence, and religious influence. The various curriculum players and philosopher are expected to adopt research and innovation policies in dealing with the various negative influences on the Nigerian HEI curriculum that makes it difficult to reflect the notion of black consciousness.

The protests drawn thousands of youths to the streets in a wave of rolling fury that built into one of the largest demonstrations for years in the country. Unlike previous protests in the country, the 2020 year's protests played out across social networks in a buildup of videos, images, and stories on Twitter Facebook, and other platforms displaying pictures and footage from the streets. This study employed the Social Network Theory in identifying the influence of social media as a strategy for protest movements and for the diffusion of information about #EndSARS and the sustenance of this movement over a long period, despite forces that have tried to silence it. Factors such as growing population, age, gender, education, economy etc., continue to play a major role in inhibiting people's digital access. As a result of the instant exchange of information, people now have access to knowledge, information, data, and other useful things to them than the world has ever recorded in history. People then see the need to be digital inclusive and to be part of the fascinating historical development of ICTs. To enhance people digital inclusiveness, the role of public libraries cannot be overemphasized. This study explores the role of public libraries in making ICTs more accessible to the populations of South Africa, and how these libraries increase ICTs relevance to people's lives, needs, aspirations, and ultimately, in bridging the digital divide. This study adopts the digital divide approach in discussing the state and role of public libraries in South Africa in bridging the digital gap among its citizens. The authors integrate data from studies on digital inclusion and from Public Library Access studies to gives clearer picture on the issue of digital inclusion and the role of public libraries in South Africa. This study found that digital inclusion goes beyond internet literacy and computer access, but it signifies technical proficiency and people's ability to access appropriate digital services and contents as and when needed. This study also found that the public libraries play an indispensable role in providing and sustaining digital inclusion for people across South Africa, however not without some challenges.

The aim of this study, therefore, is to design a conceptually sound model of the factors that affect the attitudes of language academics towards Computer Assisted Language Learning Tool for African Indigenous Languages (CALLTAIL) and to examine the relationship between CALL and language attrition, especially for marginalised African languages. Health care providers play a fundamental role in the society as the foremost members of the healt... more Health care providers play a fundamental role in the society as the foremost members of the health care service team for the victims of sexual violence and abuse and their attitudes towards victims of sexual violence and abuse can play an essential role in the standard of health care services provided for sexual violence and abuse victims. Thus, this study investigates the attitude of care providers towards sexual and abuse victims in a university health center in Nigeria, Obafemi Awolowo University in South west Nigeria. A random sampling of 40 students of Obafemi Awolowo University and 15 health care providers from Obafemi Awolowo University health center was conducted. A survey and focused group discussion were used as the research instrument of this study. The result of the study shows that the females are mostly the victims of sexual violence and abuse and this is because of the attitude of culture towards female gender. The finding also reveals that sexual violence is a function of power relation between the abused and the abuser and this study concludes that sexual violence is an abuse of power. The study also showed that health care providers have insufficient knowledge in dealing with sexual violence and abuse victims. This study therefore recommends that health care providers should be more professional in dealing with victims of sexual violence and abuse. Health facilities should also provide posttraumatic intervention within the health facilities to complement the work of health care providers and to soothing the pains of the victims.

This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by African language lecturers and highlights the need for institutional support, resource availability, and community engagement to promote and sustain African language education in higher education institutions.

The effectiveness of vaccination programs against infectious illnesses is threatened by the evolu... more The effectiveness of vaccination programs against infectious illnesses is threatened by the evolution of vaccine resistance, which poses a severe danger to international public health initiatives. Conventional methods of addressing vaccine resistance have frequently been constrained by their onedimensional emphasis, which ignores the intricate interactions between biological, epidemiological, and sociocultural elements influencing the development of resistance. In response, this research supports a multi-criteria strategy that incorporates several viewpoints and standards to comprehend and manage vaccination resistance fully. Five strategies-provider-patient communication, health education campaigns, social media campaigns, community outreach initiatives, and influencer partnerships-are incorporated into the framework. Ten criteria are employed to evaluate these strategies: impact, resistance to misinformation, inclusivity, penetration, community engagement, and facilitation of dialogue, credibility, establishment of trust, resource demands, and adaptability. The CRITIC method is utilized to ascertain the relative significance of each criterion, whereas the CoCoSo and TOPSIS methods are employed to prioritize the strategies according to their appropriateness. As indicated by the findings, the criterion of vaccine effectiveness holds the greatest significance, with trust and credibility following suit. It is determined that health education campaigns are the most effective approach to tackle vaccine hesitancy, whereas influencer partnerships are deemed to be the least effective.

The interactions among linguistic obstacles, cultural and religious beliefs, and historical elements that lead to vaccine hesitancy among Nigeria's many ethnic groups are examined in this review article. It analyzes the decision-making processes and information needs of Nigerian parents regarding childhood vaccinations. The article evaluates the effectiveness of existing vaccine promotion interventions and communication strategies, highlighting successes, limitations, and areas for improvement. By consolidating research findings, the review aims to inform the development of culturally appropriate and context-specific approaches to address vaccine hesitancy and enhance vaccine uptake in Nigeria. Recommendations emphasize formative research, community engagement, capacity building for healthcare workers, and the strategic use of diverse communication channels to reach diverse populations with tailored vaccination information and support.

Representation and inclusion have become pressing issues in recent years, as systemic biases resu... more Representation and inclusion have become pressing issues in recent years, as systemic biases resulting in the underrepresentation of certain groups continue to be revealed in scholarly publishing. This paper presents strategies that have been implemented by the African Journal of Inter/Multidisciplinary Studies (AJIMS) to promote equity and diversify its authorship, reviewers, editors, and the research published in the journal. Specifically, the paper discusses how targeted recruitment of reviewers and intentional diversification of the AJIMS editorial board have brought traditionally excluded voices into the journal's editorial decision-making processes. Additionally, the paper highlights how special issues, targeted calls for papers, and an articulated values/practices statement have shaped the focus and values of the research published in AJIMS. While these strategies have the potential to make scholarly publishing more representative of diversity while upholding quality standards, the paper argues that systemic change necessitates commitment at all levels. In conclusion, the paper emphasizes that lasting inclusive practices require the dedication of all stakeholders such as authors, editors, reviewers, publishers, professional societies, and the wider research community engaged with scholarly publishing.

Protests in Nigeria have gained global attention in recent times and have attracted different exp... more Protests in Nigeria have gained global attention in recent times and have attracted different explanations about their root causes. Violence may sometimes erupt because of protests; however, this does not usually happen until additional factors contribute to the protests. This study presents a Social Network Theory perspective on the agitation for #EndSARS among the Nigerian masses, especially the youths. #EndSARS is a movement against extrajudicial police brutality and a call to put an end to bad governance in Nigeria. This study was inspired by the following: (i) the rising popularity of social media in the present day; (ii) the worldwide increase in social media activism; and (iii) the diffusion of information by social media users. This study therefore employed the Social Network Theory in identifying the influence of social media on the diffusion of information about the #EndSARS movement and the sustenance of this movement over a long period, despite forces that have tried to silence the movement. This study argued that the sustenance of protests such as #EndSARS over a long period was dependent on factors such as: (i) that some individuals were more resistant to being influenced than others; (ii) that some individuals tended to be more responsive than others; and (iii) that some individuals seemed to be more affected than others (and were therefore more likely to pass information on to others). The findings revealed that protesters used emotional dynamics, collective identities, symbolic artefacts, and mutual values to sustain protests if their demands were not met on time.

This study examines vaccine hesitancy as an emerging public health concern that undermines the ef... more This study examines vaccine hesitancy as an emerging public health concern that undermines the efficacy of vaccination initiatives. Healthcare providers play a crucial role in addressing vaccine hesitancy; however, many lack effective communication strategies. This study developed evidence-based communication guidelines to assist healthcare providers in discussing vaccines with hesitant patients. Drawing on Bourdieu's theoretical framework, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten vaccine-hesitant parents and ten paediatricians in Nigeria. Through reflexive thematic analysis of the interview transcripts, this study uncovers power dynamics, legitimacy struggles, and cultural capital's significance in vaccine conversations. The findings reveal that hesitant parents question the legitimacy of vaccine recommendations, feeling marginalised yet constrained by societal norms of responsible parenthood. Similarly, healthcare providers' reliance on biomedical expertise often proves insufficient without rapport building, cultural competency, and addressing patients' unique knowledge assets. The findings of this study contribute to communication theory, medical education, and clinical practice by advocating for power-conscious, dialogue-based strategies to promote vaccination amidst uncertainty and scepticism.

Over the last few years, the publishing industry has experienced significant changes and developm... more Over the last few years, the publishing industry has experienced significant changes and developments, most of which have had a positive influence on scholarly publishing. For instance, the gradual popularity of open access publishing has contributed to the wider access and readership of published materials. Also, the recent development in the abilities of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to assist in the publication process is laudable for its potential. The gradual shift from print to online publication is also a commendable development in global publishing. Not without their own challenges, these developments, among others, have mostly impacted global publishing in a positive way. In the current study, the researchers' argument stems from the notion that although these developments are invaluable, there are accompanying impediments that publishing professionals as well as publishing outlets must consider. In response to these developments, role-players in the publishing industry must constantly reassess their publishing processes in order to carefully manage and negotiate what is termed by this study as a 'double-edged sword' (capable of having positive and negative consequences). This study reviews existing studies, draws views from publishing experts, and seeks opinions from scholars to establish methods of negotiating some of the key developments in global publishing.

This study examined the role of supervisors in supporting postgraduate students from the students... more This study examined the role of supervisors in supporting postgraduate students from the students' perspective. Through interviews with postgraduate students at two universities, the research aimed to understand how students perceive and experience guidance from their supervisors. The factors examined included meeting frequency, feedback, and guidance received by students from supervisors. The analysis identified strengths in supervisory support in these areas, as well as areas needing improvement. Results indicated quality feedback and regular communication had the greatest positive impact. However, many students desired more hands-on help with methodology and writing. The study recommends supervisor training programs focused on writing guidance and supervision skills. By implementing such programs, universities can enable supervisors to provide optimal student support, thereby improving experiences and outcomes. This research provides key insights into strengthening student-supervisor relationships.

This study investigates the motivations and thought processes behind grammar avoidance in senior ... more This study investigates the motivations and thought processes behind grammar avoidance in senior high school second language (L2) English learners during grammar learning. Twelve suburban public school intermediate proficiency L2 English learners were selected. Data was collected through qualitative semistructured interviews and thematically analyzed. Using Bourdieu's sociological theory, the following themes emerged from the data analysis: (i) Strategic Simplification: Navigating Linguistic Capital and Habitus for Effective Communication, (ii) Strategic Avoidance: Navigating Complex Sociolinguistic Forces to Optimize Communication, (iii) Managing Perceived Communication Risk, and (iv) Strategic Avoidance as Temporary Adaptation: Ambivalent Linguistic Simplification. Cognitively, limited working memory hindered processing and producing complex syntax, while avoidance helped manage high cognitive load. Insufficient explicit grammatical knowledge also prevented consolidating new structures. Avoidance allowed time to acquire the declarative knowledge needed. The findings suggest grammar avoidance balances complexity and accuracy, motivated by affective and cognitive constraints. Implications include building confidence, knowledge, and skills to enable early practice with complex constructions rather than prolonged avoidance. The study recommends that further research is required to determining optimal thresholds for avoidance and levels of optimal challenge for introducing complex grammar.

Through this relationship, the supervisor facilitates the student's scholarly development. This study investigates supervisors' roles in supporting postgraduate students from the students' perspective. This study through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 12 doctoral and masters students at two universities seeks to investigate how postgraduate students perceive and undergo guidance from their supervisors. The factors analyzed include the role of networking and motivational supports provided by supervisors during postgraduate students' research journey. This study explores the ways supervisors provide career mentoring and networking to prepare students for postgraduate careers, and how they inspire and emotionally assist students through inherent research challenges. The findings identify strengths in supervisory support and areas needing enhancement. The findings indicate that many students desire more hands-on help with methodology and writing and career mentoring emerges as an area where postgraduate support falls short of expectations. The study recommends that supervisor trainings be provided for supervisors and intending ones, and such trainings should be focused on writing guidance, networking, advising and motivation. By implementing such programs, universities can empower supervisors to optimally assist students, thereby enhancing experiences and outcomes.

The aim was to understand perspectives on using male versus female caregivers. Respondents included equal numbers of married men and women aged 30-50 years old. The study asked about their willingness to use male caregivers, reasons behind their decision, expected impacts on children, and need for societal change. The study took place in Ogbomoso South and North Local Government of Nigeria, where 32 parents and prospective parents were surveyed about their attitudes toward home-based male caregivers for daycare children. A qualitative approach was used, with accidental sampling. Inductive thematic analysis elicited key themes shaping attitudes and norms. A prevalent theme was associating caregiving with inherent female capabilities and maternal duties - many felt women naturally provide superior nurturing and care while men lack these innate aptitudes. Alongside this was strong distrust of males with children, stemming from abuse and misconduct fears. However, some felt gender irrelevant, professing egalitarian ideals. But pursuing equality conflicted with lingering scepticism about men's care motivations. It's apparent that parents lack a framework for choosing caregivers yet choose for their children. Such a framework could help bridge the gender inequality gap in caregiving.

However, some language instructors hold negative attitudes toward technology, particularly computer-assisted language teaching (CALT), which may affect the advancement of language teaching. This study examines the attitudes of language instructors toward CALT in some South African public universities and identifies sustainable lessons that could promote the use of CALT. The study employed a quantitative research approach using content analysis and surveys to comprehensively investigate language instructors’ attitudes toward CALT. Surveys provided the required information about the attitudes of language instructors toward CALT, and content analysis and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data and identify sustainable lessons from the attitudes of the language instructors toward CALT. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the survey results. The analysis revealed that some language instructors have negative attitudes toward CALT, suggesting that institutions require a fundamental approach to advance the use of CALT. Sustainable lessons learned from the attitudes of language instructors toward CALT are identified, and recommendations are made about how to implement effective CALT on a personal and institutional basis. This study highlights the importance of a positive attitude toward CALT and developing a fundamental approach to using CALT in language teaching. The sustainable lessons learned from this study could inform and advance language teaching practices that employ CALT, inform future research, and promote effective language teaching practices that use CALT.

The study is grounded in the Yoruba worldview, which frames retribution as essential for restoring cosmic and social equilibrium when moral norms are violated. The data analysis used textual analysis of Aníkúlápó’s narrative depictions of crime and punishment as insights into traditional Yoruba principles of retributive justice. The findings reveal that the movie accurately portrays customary public punishment processes in precolonial Yoruba society aimed at communal justice and harmony. Beliefs in supernatural forces dispensing divine retribution are also authentically represented. While punishments seek to deter crime and rehabilitate offenders, scholarly critiques note occasional unfairness and excess. Overall, the analysis of the movie illuminates the pivotal role of retribution in Yoruba's cultural identity and moral philosophy. The key themes in the study relate to retribution's links to cosmic balance, supernatural dimensions, and functions as deterrence and rehabilitation. By situating the analysis of Aníkúlápó within scholarship on African jurisprudence, the study elucidates Yoruba perspectives on fate, choice, proportionality, and pragmatism when responding to moral complexities and wrongdoing. This study contributes original humanistic insight into indigenous African philosophies of social harmony beyond punitive justice. This study recommends comparing diverse narratives and contemporary attitudes to enrich the understanding retribution's nuanced cultural significance.

To examine the politeness strategies used in Yoruba greetings, a simple textual analysis was employed. The concept of politeness considers greetings as significant in all human conversational interactions since they contribute to establishing and maintaining rapport between speakers. This study identifies several functions of greetings, including discourse initiation and termination, gap filling, solidarity, security and acceptance, courtesy and respect, and comradeship. Additionally, the study explores the social distance between interlocutors, the power dynamics between the speaker and the listener, and the formal relationships between them, which influence the specific types of politeness strategies employed. This research provides valuable insights into the behavioural characteristics and cultural values of Yoruba language speakers and individuals from other linguistic backgrounds worldwide.

This study argues that for the curriculum of HEIs in Africa to be relevant to the notion of black consciousness, it should mirror the philosophies of Africa as a continent. The curriculum should mirror the lives of students of Africa and their learning needs at a particular place at a given time, not catering for the lives of students and the learning needs of students of other locations. To achieve this, a deliberate effort should be made to repudiate foreign philosophies and external behavioral patterns as they relate to curriculum development and the endorsement of traditionally accepted ways of thinking and acting in the process and execution of curriculum development activities. Nigeria HEI curriculum seems to mirror so much of the foreign philosophies rather than Nigerian native philosophies. However, the true relevance of this curriculum to the notion of black consciousness is still unclear. This study therefore explores the Nigerian HEI curriculum to date to consider the content thereof and to ascertain its relevance to the notion of black consciousness. This study adopts a historical and explorative design in describing the development of the Nigerian HEI curriculum. The finding of this study reveals that many influencing factors mitigate against the true relevance of the Nigerian HEI Curriculum to the notion of Black Consciousness. These mitigating factors includes culture, external influence (western influence), internal influence, political influence, and religious influence. The various curriculum players and philosopher are expected to adopt research and innovation policies in dealing with the various negative influences on the Nigerian HEI curriculum that makes it difficult to reflect the notion of black consciousness.

Unlike previous protests in the country, the 2020 year's protests played out across social networks in a buildup of videos, images, and stories on Twitter Facebook, and other platforms displaying pictures and footage from the streets. Factors such as growing population, age, gender, education, economy etc., continue to play a major role in inhibiting people's digital access. As a result of the instant exchange of information, people now have access to knowledge, information, data, and other useful things to them than the world has ever recorded in history. People then see the need to be digital inclusive and to be part of the fascinating historical development of ICTs. To enhance people digital inclusiveness, the role of public libraries cannot be overemphasized. This study explores the role of public libraries in making ICTs more accessible to the populations of South Africa, and how these libraries increase ICTs relevance to people's lives, needs, aspirations, and ultimately, in bridging the digital divide. This study adopts the digital divide approach in discussing the state and role of public libraries in South Africa in bridging the digital gap among its citizens. The authors integrate data from studies on digital inclusion and from Public Library Access studies to gives clearer picture on the issue of digital inclusion and the role of public libraries in South Africa. This study found that digital inclusion goes beyond internet literacy and computer access, but it signifies technical proficiency and people's ability to access appropriate digital services and contents as and when needed. This study also found that the public libraries play an indispensable role in providing and sustaining digital inclusion for people across South Africa, however not without some challenges.

Health care providers play a fundamental role in the society as the foremost members of the healt... more Health care providers play a fundamental role in the society as the foremost members of the health care service team for the victims of sexual violence and abuse and their attitudes towards victims of sexual violence and abuse can play an essential role in the standard of health care services provided for sexual violence and abuse victims. Thus, this study investigates the attitude of care providers towards sexual and abuse victims in a university health center in Nigeria, Obafemi Awolowo University in South west Nigeria. A random sampling of 40 students of Obafemi Awolowo University and 15 health care providers from Obafemi Awolowo University health center was conducted. A survey and focused group discussion were used as the research instrument of this study. The result of the study shows that the females are mostly the victims of sexual violence and abuse and this is because of the attitude of culture towards female gender. The finding also reveals that sexual violence is a function of power relation between the abused and the abuser and this study concludes that sexual violence is an abuse of power. The study also showed that health care providers have insufficient knowledge in dealing with sexual violence and abuse victims. This study therefore recommends that health care providers should be more professional in dealing with victims of sexual violence and abuse. Health facilities should also provide posttraumatic intervention within the health facilities to complement the work of health care providers and to soothing the pains of the victims.

The study contends that language lecturers’ choices in teaching with technology were affected by the social phenomena of the field in which they operate. By adopting Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, capital, and field, the study offers a multi pronged approach to understanding the complex nature of the relationship between practices of individuals and social structures. A thematic textual analysis was used to investigate the attitudes of lecturers who taught African languages in selected public universities in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The analysis reveals a mutually reinforcing relationship between individuals who operate in the teaching field and their behavioural attitudes towards using technology in teaching African languages. The study contributes to understanding how individuals and groups navigate different social and cultural contexts and how they could use their resources to the advantage of their fields. In addition, the study showed how agents actively try to shape their current teaching practices and adopt new approaches while subtly resisting external pressures that conflict with the practical realities of their field and their audience (students). The results of the interviews indicate that individuals' behaviours were influenced by the forces of the field where they operated, external factors and their habitus. This study recommends that policymakers collaborate with stakeholders like communities, governments, institutions, and lecturers to ensure technology development for teaching African languages yields desirable results. It also suggests African countries create an enabling environment for African languages to thrive, and future research adopts an integrated approach examining various factors influencing technology use in language teaching.
