Middle Nelson

出典:『Wiktionary』 (2011/01/03 04:14 UTC 版)

語源

A colloquialism specific to Yorktown, Virginia. The phrase is related to the progeny of Governor Thomas Nelson, Jr.; a signer of the American Declaration of Independence.

During the American Revolution, Governor Nelson spent virtually all of his family fortune supporting the militia forces in Virginia. As a result, future generations of the Nelson family had only the family name to trade upon. A later great-grandson, also named Thomas, who was an inn keeper in Yorktown became notorious for abusing his ancestor's reputation to advance his own standing. Leveraging the prestige of Governor Nelson, he would inject his own (often ill-informed) opinion into every community activity - resulting in invariable delays and, frequently, havoc. As a result, community leaders were often required to make time consuming and costly efforts to avoid keeping Nelson from intervening in their business. Although the additional work did not directly contribute to completing the project, it allowed the activities to proceed unencumbered by Thomas Nelson's interference.
