From Old Latin ferctum, firctum (“a ritual bread made with honey and oil”), from Proto-Italic *ferktom, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerH-g-tos, from the root *bʰer- (“to roast; to bake; to boil; to cook; to burn”); cognate with Ancient Greek φρύγω (phrúgō, “to roast; to bake”), Sanskrit भृज्ज् (bhṛjj, “to roast; to grill; to fry”), भृग् (bhṛg, “crackling of fire”), Old Irish bairgen (“bread”), Oscan fertalis, Umbrian frehtu.
