使用する際の注意点
With regard to the LGBTQ sense:
- Some early (1970s and 1980s) uses gloss tranny as transvestite. Some scholars from that era (like Kate Bornstein) say the term broadly encompassed transvestites and/or drag queens and trans people (and that people moved between these categories). Some users of the term (by the 1990s) distinguished trannies (who "are born biologically male and either dress up as women on occasion or live as women [and] may or may not have taken hormones to alter the appearance of their bodies") from transsexuals (who have sex reassignment surgery), much the same way some people distinguish(ed) transgender people from transsexuals.
- In Australia, the term (sometimes spelled trannie) was used by transsexuals as well as transvestites/drag queens and transgender people, and was in use in academic discussions of such people by the 1990s, having a more neutral tone in Australia then than it has (for example) in the US today.
- By at least the 1990s, some trans people who had lived through the 1970s and 80s were stating that the term had been, and continued to be, sometimes used "to abuse not only actual trans people, but a list of 'weird' people seen as non-gender-conforming". From early on (at least the 1970s), and still to the present day, many uses of the term have been in the context of sex work and/or pornography. Over time, there has been increasing agreement that the term is offensive, though it also continues to be used in self-referential / reclaimed ways by some trans people.
