Parallel to the changes in the conservation attitudes at both local and global levels, in many cities in the world in general and in the Mediterranean region in particular, policies which incorporate the physical, social and economic assets, to revitalize the HUCs have been developed and implemented. Most frequently, international documents and conventions set the basis for these local policies. However, literature survey reveals that resulting outcomes of the implementation of these policies have not always been successful due to the lack of linkage between policies, techniques, people, culture, the environment and the economy. Accordingly, the main aim of this paper is to bring some proposals for the conservation and revit...

So... more Urban public spaces are the spatial nexus of social interactions, activities, and expressions. Society manifests itself within these spaces through different lenses such as cultures and norms. The framework and restrictions related to gender-based behavior play a central role in the discourse about inclusivity and equity in urban public spaces when viewed through these lenses. There is, however, a gap in the literature that addresses how culture and gender influence public space behaviors and intentions within a traditional and modern cultural framework. The current study tests whether culture correlates with public space behavior on a neighborhood scale. A comparative study was conducted between two distinct neighborhoods in the city of Kerman, Iran. The two cases were selected due to their significant differences in how women use and interact with urban space. The effects of gender differences and perceived constraints on how residents manifest their behavior in public spaces were...

Therefore historic buildings become not only obsolete in their functional life but also a forgotten place. However historical buildings as reminders of the past must be conserve from visual and perceptual growth. The walled city of Famagusta with strong historical aspect has also faced with this prob lem. The main aim of this research is to develop a sustainable environment through adaptive reuse method as one of the intervention methods to revitalize buildings and effect of this method on the identity of the historical buildings is highlighted. To approach the aims the authors tried to examine four historical churches in the walled city of Famagusta as the case studies and analyzed each of them through different ways of adaptive re-use which are compatible and most appropriate re-use and also offers a guideline according to the present culture and society of Famagusta.

In fact, there is a good deal of literature which is related to specific and finite cultural strategies. Although scholars, in some cases, may suggest other perspectives, their value narrows to a comprehensive evaluation regarding the possible interpretation of cultural agglomeration in respect of urban regeneration. Accordingly, this study, by using an interdisciplinary systemic approach based on the clustering of cultural carriers, developed the cultural strategies under a six concepts scheme. The study then, through developing a method based on modes and development approach of cultural agglomeration, recategorized the six mentioned strategies into three major categories of cultural strategies, to find out their contribution in the process of urban regeneration. Overall, the study revealed the extent of cultural agglomeration as a method of developing cultural strategies in urban regeneration.

It represents first scenario-based simulations of the future growth of Famagusta as “do-nothing” and “sustainable”. Under the do-nothing scenario, Markov Chain probability analysis with CA models is used with temporal land-use/cover datasets based on the images from 2002 and 2011. It shows that, Famagusta City is moving away from sustainable development. Future expansion of both medium-density and low-density urban zones are always located around existing built-up urban area along transportation lines. A similar model is employed by applying sustainable urban development policies by the policy driven scenario. As a main goal, sustainable urban development includes three main criteria, compactness, environmental protection...

Therefore, paying attention to their regeneration can create a sustainable city. The purpose of this study was to determine the resilience of neighborhoods in Tehran and evaluate effective criteria for the resilience increase. In this study, to evaluate the resilience of Tehran, initially, 18 criteria were considered. Then, using the Delphi technique, 14 criteria among them were selected for final analysis. Using the AHP multi-criteria decision-making method, the importance of each criterion was determined. Using GIS capabilities, the parameters map was prepared, and by combining the prepared maps with AHP weights, a resilience map was created. Finally, 20 neighborhoods with the lowest resilience were identified as priorities for stabilization and regeneration measures, and the criteria status used in them was examined. Results showed that deteriorated urban areas (19.53%) and con...

Through its long, rich, unique and turbulent history, it enjoys the opportunity to house many remarkable remains of historical, architectural and cultural heritage. The main aim of this paper is to make a thorough investigation on the cultural heritage values of the Northern part of Cyprus, which has been under the rule of Turkish community since 1974, when the Island was divided into two parts – Turks living in the North and Greeks living in the South. With this aim in mind, the paper firstly will evaluate cultural heritage in terms of its definition, various types, value and meaning in general. Since the main concern is on the tangible cultural heritage, the discussion will be deeper on this type of cultural heritage. Secondly, the paper will turn to...

The pioneering of these approaches are typo-morphological approach of G. Caniggia and the evolutionary approach of MRG Conzen, which is the focus of this paper. However, it is also worth mentioning JWR Whiteheand who has integrated the analysis of changes to the building fabric with the study of the individuals and organizations involved in the various aspects of property development, users, planners and architect. Whitheand (1981), and also Kropf (2009) who has named four distinct approaches being, spatial analytical, configurational, process typological and historico-geographical, for the purpose of determining more explicitly which aspects are included in the different approaches to urban morphology (Kropf, 2009). Based on the theoretical approaches of the above mentioned scholars, in the scope of this article, architectural and geographical dimension of urban morphology will be discussed on ...

Especially, rising urban sprawl and chaotic urban areas with economic, social and environmental problems, which impinge on the liveability of cities demand critical studies to aid policy formulation and implementation. Although the most exact approach is subject to debate, it is notable that accessibility to urban amenities has a crucial impact on the liveability of cities. Moreover, it is argued that accessibility is a subject of functional place quality which is a dimension of liveability. Therefore, assessing accessibility from a liveability perspective would provide a basis for suggesting planning policies and interventions for improving accessibility of cities. Exploring different methodologies and approaches to accessibility measurements have shown that assessing user perception, a normative approach, is the most appropriate for a new liveability-based methodology. Following from these, liveability, as it relates to place quality, has been defined in conjunction with accessibility and mobility. Afterward, accessibility has been explored through a liveability perspective to determine its indicators and criteria for suggesting a normative methodology to be able to make evaluations of accessibility of cities.

Unfortunately, these days two main factors, “city parameters” and “meteorological parameters” affect the intensity of UHI. Consequently, intensity of urban heat island differ in each city according to the physical, morphological characteristics such as location, size, and density of their built-up areas, land uses, population and air pollution together with climatically characteristics. The traditional part of the city of Shiraz with its unique culture, lifestyle of the people, and the environmental factors (e.g. usage of proper local materials, climate, and etc) is a good example for the whole city that. Thus, the main purpose of the study is to determine the factors that increase the intensity of UHI in Shiraz city to indicate factors, which influence on change in the culture of the people. Both qualitative and quantitative approach methods used in this research and adopted techniques are personal observation and literature review. UHI is one of the main factor in changing human lifestyle, city environment, and urban climate. Keywords: Urban Heat Island, environmental factor, culture

Island cities (densely populated small islands and population centres of larger islands and archipelagos) nevertheless play import cultural, economic, political, and environmental roles on local, regional, and global scales. Many major cities and ports have developed on small islands, and even villages can fulfil important urban functions on lightly populated islands. Island concepts are also deployed to metaphorically describe developments in urban space. The journal Urban Island Studies explores island and urban processes around the world, taking an island approach to urban research and an urban approach to island research.

Studies of oil cities are generally based on their industrial characteristics rather than their symbolic meanings. However, since oil became a distinctive symbol in the Middle East, these cities need to be examined from an altered perspective. Therefore, the present study analyses the urban context of Masjed Soleyman city based on four concepts of “city as overall sign”, “image of city”, “language of city” and “interpretation/communication” as well as the derived indicators from each concept. It is concluded that given the critical importance of oil at both the national and international levels, oil production was arguably maintained or sustained by various treatments of this city's inhabitants. In the process of exploring this ancient city, the study portrays that Masjed Soleyman characteristically symbolises control, social segregation and surveillance.

In addition to being one of the main factors or components in the configuration of spatial structure, a wall can also be assigned various intangible social meanings. Multiplicity of walls in many cases especially in partitioned or divided cities, have been studied by many scholars. Nicosia, the capital of the island of Cyprus can best be interpreted with the use of the words: walls, division, buffer zone, green line, destruction, and re-connection. The main aim of this paper is, first, to discuss and interpret the two walls (hard borders) of Nicosia-the historic walls and the buffer zone. Second, the role of these walls with respect to the issue of forming a border will be investigated throughout the partitioning process of the city. Additionally, the paper will try to identify the changing meaning and interpretation of these walls with respect to the two major ethnic communities, who are divided within the city.
