Cognates include dialectal Finnish valu (“light”), Estonian valu (“light”) (poetic), Erzya валдо (valdo, “light”), Komi-Permyak волявны (voľavny, “shine”) and Hungarian világ (“light”). Compare also Finnish valkea (“white, fire, bright”), Estonian valgus (“light”), from *walke.
