The complexity sciences have contributed a wide range of concepts and tools to investigate and recast time in social systems. However, the dominant focus on quantitative models and quantification of data in the complexity sciences also prohibits a deeper understanding of time. As such, there is a need to fuse alternative notions of time with how it is commonly understood and measured in the complexity sciences. To this end, we juxtapose diverse notions of time from the social sciences and comment upon how this contrasts with notions in the complexity sciences. We will demonstrate how (qualitative) temporal casing can more appropriately capture social and causal complexity through within-case time variation. We use examples from research into megaprojects to demonstrate how temporal casing plays out in empirical analysis.

Research paper thumbnail of The “qualitative” in qualitative comparative analysis (QCA): research moves, case-intimacy and face-to-face interviews

In this study, we focus on the former and, by means of the "interpretive spiral", we critically look at the research process of QCA. We show how QCA as a research approach is composed of (1) an "analytical move", where cases, conditions and outcome(s) are conceptualised in terms of sets, and (2) a "membership move", where set membership values are qualitatively assigned by the researcher (i.e. calibration). Moreover, we show that QCA scholars have not sufficiently acknowledged the data generation process as a constituent research phase (or "move") for the performance of QCA. This is particularly relevant when qualitative data-e.g. interviews, focus groups, documents-are used for subsequent analysis and calibration (i.e. analytical and membership moves). We call the qualitative data collection process "relational move" because, for data gathering, researchers establish the social relation "interview" with the study participants. By using examples from our own research, we show how a dialogical interviewing style can help researchers gain the in-depth knowledge necessary to meaningfully represent qualitative data into set membership values for QCA, hence improving our ability to account for the "qualitative" in QCA.

Guiding questions for the creation of such a data policy in the context of the Smart City Bamberg are discussed. Furthermore, the report shows how the smart cities of Barcelona, Hamburg, Helsinki, Stuttgart, Vienna and Zurich proceed. The presented analysis is based on public documents and interviews.

In Southern European countries, which are characterized by the highest rate of home occupancy in Europe, urban sprawl can be considered as a type of spatial organization that facilitates home-ownership. In this context, local governments' decisions emerge as a discriminant factor for sprawled housing provision, as local authorities purposely manage and allocate municipal land in order to provide affordable, suburban housing. Hence, housing preferences have a marginal effect in producing sprawled residential areas, as people tend to conform - or at best choose among - the housing stock that municipalities offer. This claim is supported by the use of European and local data on urban development patterns in two Southern European cities, Barcelona and Milan, during a 30 years timespan. Furthermore, interviews have been carried out to a variety of actors in order to explain the processes of sprawled housing provision in both areas.

In contrast, this article suggests that local administrative units are crucial agents in defining and shaping the processes of urban development at a larger scale. In this article It is argued that, when a given local government is allowed to subsist mainly on local taxation, a fiscal crisis of local government units is a determinant factor of urban growth, as each administration tries to fuel up urban expansion, in the hopes of boosting the local tax base. By employing a multi-method approach, we have ascertained that other characteristics traditionally associated with urban sprawling were not present in the area of Milan, so it has been identified as a least likely case to experience urban dispersion. In this context, we concentrate mainly on the Groane Regional Park. The aim of article is to re--‐focus on the local administrations as powerful agents that shape metropolitan scale urban development.

The aim is to unravel the political choices and the routine urban planning practices triggering land consumption for residential use, emphasizing both the similarities and differences between Barcelona and Milan as two Southern European case-studies. In doing so, multi-level governance is the frame within which public and private actors are identified, and their roles and modes of interactions in shaping the boundaries of borderless cities are defined. This paper tries to address the mechanism through which suburban boundaries are shaped by the land use policy decisions taken by actors in a multi-level governance context at the urban, provincial, metropolitan and regional levels.
