Welcome to filk_prompts, an LJ fan fiction writing community!

This community was created out of the thought of combining three of my greatest loves - fan fiction, filk and story ideas.

Fan fiction refers to stories written by fans based upon, set in the world of and/or using the characters of an existing book, movie, comic or any other work.

Filk is the mustic of science fiction and fantasy fans - new words written to familiar tunes, or completely original songs on a variety of SF, fantasy, humor and fandom subjects.

And I do trust you know what story ideas are.

The premise of the community is simple: Every week, on Friday mornings in fact, your friendly neighborhood mod Joan M. would post a line from a filk song (or foundfilk - mainstream music that can pass off as filk, such as David Bowie's "Space Oddity") to the community. The members are then challenged to write fics based on that line - any fandom, any subject, any length, any rating (provided apt warning is given for touchy subjects) and post them to the community journal. The other members of the community are then requested to comment on those fics to the best of their ability.

And here comes a twist. The next week, along with the new prompt line, yours truly would be posting the full lyrics to the song last week's line was taken from, and see what you can make of that!

This is a writing community, but within limits, discussion of fan fiction, filk and what lies between them is also welcome.

  1. Flaming is strictly forbidden, as are personal attacks on other members and vulgar bashing of stories (though constructive criticism is encouraged).

  2. Netspeak, bad spelling and eye-burning grammar are STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. This is a writers' community. Deal.

  3. Lurkers are quite welcome.

  4. Mod is God.
