Wow. Only seven hours' sleep? I guess I'm caught up at last. Ever since Monday I've been switching my alarm-clock off, crashing out by about ten o'clock and sleeping like a python for nine or ten hours.
Then I've been commuting to work by bicycle. I've trimmed a couple of corners off my route, and now it takes me about fifty minutes to cover some nine miles. Door to door, that's only a bit slower than the S-Bahn: so I get an hour and a half's bicycling time per day, but it only eats about twenty minutes of my day, and I'd much rather be on my bicycle than on the train.
This is what I mean when I say that I don't do exercise. Instead, I have to put myself in a position where exercise happens, and one ideal way to do that is to own a bicycle and live ten miles from my workplace.
Nine miles in fifty minutes... it's a good thing I'm not racing anyone. But the awful effort of the first day has worn off surprisingly quickly as my muscles remember the idea of having to earn their keep. Perhaps in a few more weeks I'll be as fast as the commuter train. In a month or two the winter snows will begin and the woodland trails will be practically unbicycleable, but who knows?—by then I might have regained enough fitness to run to work. It's far too long since I ran that far.
All this exercise is doing me no end of good. Just recently my old friend and colleague commented that I'd slowed down, that I'd lost all my zest. Well, even now, it seems to be returning: maybe, just maybe, I've got my zip back. Daaamn, wouldn't that be nice?
