Tell us about your passion for news in 250 words.
By nature I am particularly curious and inquisitive. At sixteen, despite my parents’ reluctance, I travelled for the first time out of Europe to volunteer for a month for a local community project in Africa in order to experience daily life of farmers from the Senegalese countryside. This trip completely changed my vision of the world and sparked my interest for international news and for news in general. This interest quickly became a real passion.
Ten years later there is not a day that goes by that I do not keep up with what is going on around the world. I have learned three foreign languages and I have travelled to four different continents with the view to understanding our world in a better way and to getting properly informed through direct contacts with people from different countries, cultures, religions and lifestyles.
Next to that I have always been a writer and storyteller. Throughout the years I have developed excellent writing and speaking skills. Therefore I quickly orientated my career towards the fields of communication and diplomacy.
Today I wish to pursue a career in the media industry. My main motivation is based on a desire to inform and to safeguard free and open public expression of ideas and information, which is the value I prize the most in our society.
Please tell us how you keep up to date with the news in 250 words
I visit about four news sites a day. I have a preference for news sites over daily newspapers since the formers have the advantage of being live updated. I do not have specific loyalty to particular new sites. A lot of people stimulate my thinking. These are the sites I visit the most. They are of different nationalities, languages (in English, French; Dutch and Portuguese) and political tendencies. This way I avoid bias and make sure I receive different angles of views. I read both local and national sites so that I stay current on issues close to my city as well on what is happening across the country and around the world. I also enjoy reading blogs of regular citizens to capture their opinion.
When I lack time, I use a news reader app which I customised with events on topics important to me. I set aside 30 minutes to view headlines and pursue reading any high priority or worthy topics.
On a weekly basis I read news magazines, mostly in English, such as the Time, which offer interesting opinion essays and articles that go into issues in depth.
When a topic grabs my interest I follow debates on TV, on radio or on news sites which offer forums or blogs that I can join to discuss with other users.
If I am not familiar to a particular topic, I read books, special editions, or articles on the subject.
