6:51 am | Gravity of people Yesterday a former manager of mine who I still work with told each member of his team and then me that he’d decided to take the VERP, voluntary early retirement package. Company put this option out a couple months ago and last week was the cutoff for applying for it. So if all goes accordingly his last day will be end of June, though Steve thinks they may ask him to stay through July or even August (to help with our quarterly close reporting and possibly the bulk of our budget process).EDIT: His last day will actually be end of September.( Collapse ) (Comment on this) |

1:26 pm | Garden State Fur the Weekend 2024 Just dropping a quick post about the New Jersey convention I attended this past Saturday. I had heard about it pretty recently and it’s within driving distance so I figured I’d attend, first furry convention since the whole lockdown thing.I attended Leaf Dubois’ panel on his Raccoony webcomic (formerly known as Closet Coon). Was interesting to hear his process, and honestly it’s been a long time since I read that comic… then again the issues are spread over years because they came out so sporadically. A little distracting though listening to him because in room next door was a Kids Meet & Greet event.Speaking of kids, holy shit there were a lot of them. As shy_matsi explained, a lot of furs had kids and now they’re bringing them into fandom events.Speaking of Shy, had a wonderful time chatting with him and tjcoyote at the VR panel. As mentioned above, attended the VR panel. I’ve never been involved in that growing technology but looks pretty nifty.Walked around the Dealer’s Den and Game Room, got some nice pictures of fursuits. Essentially just hung out there awhile before heading back, been so exhausted on weekends trying to catch up on lost sleep from going into the office more so I didn’t feel like I could stay the whole day… as it was I was definitely feeling it on the ride back and felt like I was riding on fumes and caffeine by the end of the trip lol.Fun time of course, will definitely try and attend next year and maybe get a room so I can also incorporate some fursuiting. 4:32 pm | Con-Roster Meme (as of May 7, 2024) There was a gap of updating this list between 2013 and 2016 so... I might be missing some stuff, tried to update it as best as I could remember and am going to try and update this as I attend new conventions/years. Attendance can blur year over year which is why I'm trying to keep at least a somewhat accurate list :PAnimeNext: 2003Anthrocon: 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013Chiller Theater: 2006FA United: 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015FurFright: 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013Furpocalypse: 2014, 2016, 2018Further Confusion: 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2015, 2016Garden State Fur the Weekend: 2024HELIOsphere: 2018Horrorfind: 2003, 2004, 2005I-Con: 2005Lunacon: 2004, 2014Mephit FurMeet: 2003, 2004Midwest FurFest: 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2013NY ComicCon: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019PAX East: 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020Rock and Shock: 2011Special Edition NYC: 2014, 2015What The Fur: 2011Miscellaneous:FEDGE: 2005Furryball: 2009Furry Picnic: 2019FoxMAS: 2008, 2010, 2016MoCCA: 2003(?), 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019Pandaguy Picnic: 2004 (6 Comments |Comment on this) |
10:26 am | People Status As an aside, this original post was made I think sometime in 2016... so some of the stuff below may have timing issues, the important thing is the list at the bottom. I keep revising the post date so it doesn't get lost in the jumble of other posts... as few as those seem to come these days.A post on Twitter caught my attention and I thought I'd mark it down here - and maybe some input in the comments section could help also. It's in regards to people that were known but seemingly dropped off into limbo - either in terms of intentional or unintentional disappearance. Just curious what happened to folks, especially people I interacted with at some point over the years and... I don't know where they've gone to. Friendships can end or drift apart and that's depressing enough, I think it may be more depressing to remember someone and have close to zero idea whatever happened to them. It's weird how online social networks can open up new worlds in terms of meeting people but it can also make you more vulnerable if a lot of your communication proceeded over those sorts of channels - in some cases I don't even know the person's RL name, just whatever alias they used.I know it's nice to have known people and that they've had some sort of impact on your life (whether you really know it or not) but... I don't like not knowing, I'm odd like that :PStarting with a quick list, anybody know what happened to these folks?Missing* alias_pup (Only met the guy once, can't remember if he was a friend of Grizz or just joined out of the blue but he helped out at the MS Walk with taking photos. Seemed like an interesting guy but he quickly dropped off the grid, I think he moved out of the area a long while back (California?). LJ account hasn't been updated in years.) (status as of 4/27/16)* bennetfox (Don't even remember last time I saw him, at a con years ago?) (status as of 4/27/16)* internetjello (This one is a longshot, I only knew them briefly through my version_zero community and their _eek_thecat_ community; deleted their account a long while back. I liked their contributions on both sites, was sad to see them vanish) (status as of 4/27/16)* killen / shepherdbear (Knew him from... I think people I had met in Connecticut. I think the last interaction I had with him was about 2005, though there could have been some after under his other lj account which apparently was deleted while his original was just forgotten. It looks like he moved overseas sometime 2005 or 2006 but that's about as current an information that I have on him) (status as of 12/19/16)* lecarick (Did not know him that well, knew he had some heavy substance issues... really just curious what happened to this guy) (status as of 10/14/16)* Plas Tiger / Green Fuzz Tiger (lost touch with him during the pandemic, recently found out he went off the grid in late 2023. contact info is either obsolete or has been deactivated.) (status as of 05/06/24)* suicidehelmet / Death Panda(?) (I think that was a furry name he used at like the only time I met him, which I think was MFF maybe? Remember so little about this guy, mostly just had interactions on livejournal back in the day :/ ) (status as of 12/29/16)* Totems (Comic artist on FurAffinity, really enjoyed his stuff. There’s been no activity on his account in years) (status as of 5/11/2021)Found* boixboi / Benjie |

12:32 am | Year in Review 2023 Another year passes, and it feels kinda/sorta like the lockdown limbo years continue so I'll have less of the structure that I've had with many of these year in review posts. As mentioned last year our dog was really showing her age, and my prediction came true even sooner than I expected. Her health took a turn for the worse early in January and the decision was made to put her to sleep - in hindsight because she didn't seem to be in pain, only occasional fits, we probably should have put her down a few days earlier because she didn't seem to really know what was going on in those last days. She has been added to our pet cemetery in my parent's back yard (I still feel badly that a few of our pets never made it there, my cat who had gotten out and wandered off to die alone, as cats sometimes do when they feel their time has come. I still kick myself that that happened... this is almost two decades ago in case anyone is wondering).( Collapse ) (Comment on this) |

12:53 pm | Talking Finances / Retirement Planning Edit: this post may be revised from time to time, but was originally posted December 2023.Thought I’d take a few minutes to post about finances, in particular retirement planning, since that’s weirdly felt like a priority of mine these days (I’m thinking in part because of worry what the future holds as well as boredom as a number of my hobbies and outlets seem… less accessible these days). I’d recently turned 46 so with less than twenty years, give or take, until my retirement it seems like a topic worth covering even if it being on livejournal means might never actually be read by others…The majority of my retirement funds have been contributed to a couple traditional 401k accounts I’ve had ( Collapse ) (Comment on this) |

12:15 am | 2022 Year in Review Well, another year passes. Can’t say much of significance has happened, still feeling like another lockdown year.Work has been full steam ahead, always busy. And unfortunately at the end of the year Jessica has decided to move on to a new company. Great opportunity for her, a different type of work and a hefty increase in salary, but disappointing that after working with her and training her for almost two years it’s all for naught. I spoke with her manager Steve and of course they’re going to fill her position but there is also talk of adding more headcount to our group (possibly another headcount for Steve’s team and really hopefully another headcount to help me and my manager Dave). In addition found out that John, who manages my manager Dave as well as Steve and Ovi, has been let go and his last day will be February 3rd (so they can get his help with the year end reporting).Life Not a whole lot going on this year. My sister and her family moved to Pennsylvania for Chris’ job. So I’ve taken some trips out there to see my nephew, my parents have traveled out there more often. This year I guess is a bit of a milestone, turned 45.Been doing a bit more saving and investing. I’ve started buying more high dividend stocks, a half formed idea of nurturing a side income of dividends - a long way to go for that but I think it’s worth pursuing. This year is first year in a long time where despite adding the maximum to my retirement accounts they’re worth less than where I ended the previous year - very depressing/frustrating.Before he moved I got my nephew to absolutely love playing Death’s Door and Untitled Goose Game on my PS4, and possibly also Cult of the Lamb.Saw another foot doctor, they’re recommending a different type of surgery, looks like that sesamoid surgery was a complete waste :/ But the pain is still here so thinking of trying it, more appointments needed before they can decide for sure what to do.Dog is doing very poorly health wise, she’s been going through a lot of seizures lately and hasn’t been eating well, and had a few breathing fits. We maybe putting her to sleep sometime soon, she’s just not getting any better and quality of life has dropped.Oh, because I mentioned it last year I’ll follow up here. There was a High School reunion this year, they combined it with the year before and after so I could have gone… I didn’t. The price to attend was a bit outrageous for what they offered, and considering how the previous one was a bit disappointing… tge people I knew who I’d like to see weren’t going to attend. So too much cost and pretty much knowing the majority of people I’d go to see weren’t going, oh and something else came up that day, I just decided to skip it. The people worth remembering from my HS days I either already see or have on Facebook, and those people I’m not going to connect further with than that since they either have wives & kids or are otherwise involved in other life things, plus there are plenty of people I don’t have interest in seeing too so there’s that as well. Maybe I’ll attend my 30th anniversary in a few years…Entertainment. Not as much in reading and watching these days. Don’t have access to the Queens library like I used to, it is something I miss. I really enjoyed watching Bullet Train earlier this year. I haven’t read any new books but I’ve bought a few series I plan on reading soon - I’ll likely start with The Three Body Problem which I’ve seen has been getting a lot of hype recently. Games I’ve been playing a bit more of the PS4. Absolutely loved playing Cult of the Lamb and Death’s Door, been trying to get into Elden Ring. My friend Dave has been organizing a number of gamefests at his place or one of his friends’ places, always fun to participate in that competition. For Christmas my friend Dave got me and Derek Switches, he said he felt bad not getting us gifts for years and since he’d received some money from his mom’s inheritance he thought he’d make up for it. 4:11 pm | Nothing much Just spent some time going through some old posts, seeing how many accounts who once commented but either no longer exist or haven’t been updated in like a decade (it’s kinda weird how many had their cut off be 2010). A little curious what happened to people I only vaguely remember.Anyway, hope anyone reading this had a great Thanksgiving and hope you have a great Christmas later this month. I’ll be posting my year in review recap at the end of the month again… not that much has happened this year. Oh one thing happened, reached my 45th birthday a few days ago. Very subdued feeling, just got dinner with family. Kinda wish had the time and ambition to do something bigger like I did for my 40th. Next year will be my 20th anniversary in furry… not sure if I’ll go to Anthrocon for that like I did in 2013… guess we’ll see when it gets closer. Right now just glancing out the window and seeing really the first snow of the season, I know it snowed a couple months ago but that melted within a day while today feels like snow that’ll stick around a little longer. 10:47 pm | Book and Bar A week ago on a whim I was driving through Kingston and shockingly I saw that Ye Old Book Shoppe had reopened (it had been about fifteen years since I saw it open, always thought it strange that it still stuck around but was closed during that time). Store mostly looked the same, saw the woman who was likely the owner talking to a customer. Half the store was closed off but I looked through some of the sci-fi / fantasy section and even though nothing grabbed my attention to be polite I picked out a book. Decided to buy the first Conan book (on a complete tangent I remembered someone I knew in College who said he didn’t read much fiction but absolutely loved the Conan books. I vaguely remember he was in an accident the night before graduation and heard was burned badly, though years later I remember seeing him on Facebook and he looked fine… and looked like he had married the girl he dated while at school). So finally my turn to pay and I asked what had happened to the store. So the previous owner was her aunt and she’d been very sick the past decade or so and passed away recently. The new owner was in process of organizing and repricing the books. I was a bit miffed that she looked up online the price of books and came up with a price on the spot (more than what the book was previously marked at. Decided I’ll give the place a bit of time to get its act together but I think she may find used book stores haven’t survived much these days because pricing is a difficult thing with them. Some books can be worth something but unfortunately a lot… it’s hard to find people to pay more than what a book originally sold for.Now fast forward back to this weekend, today felt like a drive so went out to New Paltz. I had hoped to revisit a brewery I last visited a couple years ago on advice from a friend. Called the Gilded Otter, had a cut otter design on their glasses. Unfortunately they’ve been apparently acquired by different owners, another brewery called The Clemson Brothers, so the place although hasn’t changed much now has different bears and different glasses. Wish I had been able to go back sooner before the change. (Comment on this) |

3:28 pm | Austin Public I was curious about some restaurants I used to frequent and found that this bar/restaurant near my old apartment has closed down permanently at the start of this year. It’s not too surprising, the rules during the lockdown had made things tough and this place was closed for months during the worst of it. I last ate there this past summer I think, it was open on restricted hours. Was disappointed by the menu changes so I didn’t find time to go back… and now I guess I never will.It was an interesting location for that restaurant, during my second apartment in Forest Hills I remember going there for my birthday, with a bunch of people who haven’t seen in years, when it was a Johnny Rockets. I used to stop there sometimes just to get their amazing sundae. At some point it became The Flying Pig, never ate there during that period. And I distinctly remember one time JBadger came over and we went out to eat and on his phone he saw that place was recommended so suggested we eat there only to find out the name had changed to Austin Public. We ate there anyway and enjoyed the experience, was one of the places I’d come to frequent often while living in my last apartment in Queens. I miss doing brunch there.Just add it to the long list of restaurants I really enjoy in NYC and Queens, and because my old Facebook page was taken down many of these places I’ve only got pictures of on my Untappd account:Shalimar DinerBanterEXO-CafeRattle and HumPlaza DeliBon-ChonOpen Door… haven’t thought of many of these places in awhile so definitely forgetting a bunch.Edit as of December 2023:Apparently Shorty’s has closed (another nice bar / sandwich shop near my old job)Irish American has been renamed CarraghersAnd the Rite Aid in Grand Central is in the process of closing down permanently (their stock is almost completely gone, everything on sale) (Comment on this) |

11:01 am | Moving out So after this past year+ of NYC nonsense and just stressing out at job partly because of other people leaving and it’s taken away so much of my free time to catch up with the additional responsibilities, just decided time to move out of Queens. This apartment has been my home since 2009 https://freakylynx.livejournal.com/2009/08/19/ outside my childhood home I’ve never lived anywhere nearly that long. It’s depressing to let go of something you’ve known for so long, though I’ve been becoming acquainted with that feeling in recent years (been a couple years since I’ve bought anything new for my comic collection... which is large enough at this point to become a serious space/transportation issue (I should have stopped sooner, I don’t know how I’m going to store all these things), I quit my gym membership which I had since like 2011 or so earlier this year (membership had been frozen during majority of lockdown but when they started opening up again I had to concede i wouldn’t be using it much and it was too much a drain on my wallet)).So for time being my plan is to stay in a cheaper location outside the city until I figure things out, saving money will be good enough until then ;) At least I’ll have better access to friends and my car outside the city, the people and activities that had made living in the city worthwhile have largely moved out or moved on at this point. It’s just not worth paying premium rent prices when I spend most of my time in like a five block radius of my apartment these days. And the final push was finding out that even when I return to the office I’ll probably be working only two days a week on-site... I can deal with a longer commute for two days a week.
