The Commoners' Charity Landpost
Do you recall Percy Ross, the Thanks a Million guy? From 1983 to 1999, he gave away nearly 30milliontoaveragepeoplewhoweredownontheirluckthroughhissyndicatedcolumn.Asayounggirl,Ianticipatedthediscoveryofwhowouldorwouldnotbegiftedbythegenerousmulti−millionaireasprintedinmylocalnewspapertwiceaweek.Whatweretheirstories?Whodidhedeemworthyofhisassistance?ManytimesoverIconsideredmyowncircumstancesandwonderedwhethermyowndireneedsmethiscriteriaorif,whenIwasachild,mycharmingletterjustmightinvokehimtosend30 million to average people who were down on their luck through his syndicated column. As a young girl, I anticipated the discovery of who would or would not be gifted by the generous multi-millionaire as printed in my local newspaper twice a week. What were their stories? Who did he deem worthy of his assistance? Many times over I considered my own circumstances and wondered whether my own dire needs met his criteria or if, when I was a child, my charming letter just might invoke him to send 30milliontoaveragepeoplewhoweredownontheirluckthroughhissyndicatedcolumn.Asayounggirl,Ianticipatedthediscoveryofwhowouldorwouldnotbegiftedbythegenerousmulti−millionaireasprintedinmylocalnewspapertwiceaweek.Whatweretheirstories?Whodidhedeemworthyofhisassistance?ManytimesoverIconsideredmyowncircumstancesandwonderedwhethermyowndireneedsmethiscriteriaorif,whenIwasachild,mycharmingletterjustmightinvokehimtosend1,000 so I could buy something splendid for my mom for her birthday. I never wrote, but I always wanted to. My opportunity ceased on November 11, 2001 when the philanthropist candidly known as "The Jewish Santa Claus" passed away.
For those with an excess cash flow, there are plenty of charitable organizations you can contribute towards but chances are, most of us aren't millionaires and feel our meager donations won't do too much. How often, past or present, have you felt YOU should be a charitable cause? Now you can be (or you can just help someone else out.)
So what's a buck to you? A buck is nothing to most. Can you spare a buck a month? Peanuts! The principle behind this is that with a small contribution, we can all make a big difference in the life of a fellow "little man," i.e., each other. Surely you must know someone who could use a little "assistance." Nominate them. It could make their life a whole lot easier.
The guidelines to this community are as follows:
*Members may nominate themselves, friends or someone of interest in their local media who is in need.
*Members are encouraged to read posts on a regular basis and nominate those they feel are most deserving of our monthly group donation.
*You may donate to any cause you see fit throughout the month but the goal of the community is that once a month, we all donate to the person we as a collective see as the most deserving.
*Between the 7th and 10th of each month, the number of nominations received will be tallied and the member with the most is to receive at least $1 FROM ALL MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY by the 15th of the month through paypal.
The goal of the community is hopefully to amass enough members that $1* from each will make a big difference in one person's life each month. In some situations, the moderator may ask for proof of circumstances, if applicable, to those seeking need.**
Thank you for your interest in this community.
