Hugo Award Nominee Recommendations

A place to recommend works and people for Hugo Awards

This is a totally unofficial Hugo Awards nominee recommendation community. It exists to encourage members of Worldcon to nominate the works they like for Hugo Awards.

So what are the Hugo Awards? They're the annual science fiction and fantasy awards given at the World Science Fiction Convention. They're nominated and selected by popular vote of the convention members. Award categories include literature, art, television, movies and fanwriting.

Nominations generally are open from late winter to early spring, and any member of the most recently passed World Science Fiction Convention or registered member of the upcoming World Science Fiction convention may send in a nominating ballot (make sure you check the 2012 (Chicon 7) awards registration and nomination deadlines). You might read or watch something well before the nomination period, think it's great, and want to note it somewhere.

That's what this community is for: a place to note and share your nominee candidates when you're thinking about it, not just after the year is over.

If you want to talk about the Hugo Awards in general, why don't you join worldcons? It's the place for discussion of all things Worldcon-related.

Recommendation rules:

• Please only make one recommendation per post.
• Check to see if someone has already recommended; if so recommend by commenting on that post.
• Please put the category and year of eligibility in the subject line (i.e. if a book was published in 2009, put 2010 in the subject line).
• Please "tag" the post with the category you are recommending in.
• Name the item in the body of the post.
• Self-recommending is acceptable, but must be disclosed. If you are recommending your own work or a work you took part in, you must clearly state this in the recommendation.
• Please provide links (if possible) to information about your recommended item.
• When nominating a person for an award (such as "Best Professional Artist") please provide links to information about the work they've done in the year of eligibility.
• You may include a short (1 paragraph) review or statement on the item

The rest of the rules:

• Read the "administratrivia" posts before you start making recommendations. You'll find additional things there to make your life and that of the maintainers easier.
• Don't friends-lock recommendation posts. It's contrary to the purpose of the list.
• This is a Hugo Awards recommendations list. It's not a "You're a moron! Only an idiot would think that should be nominated, much less win, a Hugo Award!" list. If you don't like a recommended item, don't comment.
• There is no quality-control on this list, other than the format guidelines. Just because something has been recommended doesn't mean it's actually good. It's up to you to read or watch the recommendations and decide for yourself whether they deserve nomination or your vote.
• None of this matters if you don't nominate and vote. If you care, join future World Science Fiction Conventions early and make sure you're eligible to nominate and vote.

Category list (excerpted from the WSFS constitution):
Section 3.3: Categories.
3.3.1: Best Novel. A science fiction or fantasy story of forty thousand (40,000) words or more.
3.3.2: Best Novella. A science fiction or fantasy story of between seventeen thousand five hundred (17,500) and forty thousand (40,000) words.
3.3.3: Best Novelette. A science fiction or fantasy story of between seven thousand five hundred (7,500) and seventeen thousand five hundred (17,500) words.
3.3.4: Best Short Story. A science fiction or fantasy story of less than seven thousand five hundred (7,500) words.
3.3.5: Best Related Work. Any work related to the field of science fiction, fantasy, or fandom, appearing for the first time during the previous calendar year or which has been substantially modified during the previous calendar year, and which is either non-fiction or, if fictional, is noteworthy primarily for aspects other than the fictional text, and which is not eligible in any other category.
3.3.6. Best Graphic Story. Any science fiction or fantasy story told in graphic form appearing for the first time in the previous calendar year. Provided that this category shall be automatically repealed unless ratified by the 2012 Business Meeting.
3.3.7: Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form. Any theatrical feature or other production, with a complete running time of more than 90 minutes, in any medium of dramatized science fiction, fantasy or related subjects that has been publicly presented for the first time in its present dramatic form during the previous calendar year.
3.3.8: Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. Any television program or other production, with a complete running time of 90 minutes or less, in any medium of dramatized science fiction, fantasy or related subjects that has been publicly presented for the first time in its present dramatic form during the previous calendar year.
3.3.9: Best Editor Short Form. The editor of at least four (4) anthologies, collections or magazine issues (or their equivalent in other media) primarily devoted to science fiction and / or fantasy, at least one of which was published in the previous calendar year
3.3.10: Best Editor Long Form. The editor of at least four (4) novel-length works primarily devoted to science fiction and / or fantasy published in the previous calendar year that do not qualify as works under 3.3.8.
3.3.11: Best Professional Artist. An illustrator whose work has appeared in a professional publication in the field of science fiction or fantasy during the previous calendar year.
3.3.12: Best Semiprozine. Any generally available non-professional publication devoted to science fiction or fantasy which by the close of the previous calendar year has published four (4) or more issues (or the equivalent in other media), at least one (1) of which appeared in the previous calendar year, and which in the previous calendar year met at least two (2) of the following criteria:
(1) had an average press run of at least one thousand (1000) copies per issue,
(2) paid its contributors and/or staff in other than copies of the publication,
(3) provided at least half the income of any one person,
(4) had at least fifteen percent (15%) of its total space occupied by advertising,
(5) announced itself to be a semiprozine.
3.3.13: Best Fanzine. Any generally available non-professional publication devoted to science fiction, fantasy, or related subjects which by the close of the previous calendar year has published four (4) or more issues (or the equivalent in other media), at least one (1) of which appeared in the previous calendar year, and which does not qualify as a semiprozine.
3.3.14: Best Fan Writer. Any person whose writing has appeared in semiprozines or fanzines or in generally available electronic media during the previous calendar year.
3.3.15: Best Fan Artist. An artist or cartoonist whose work has appeared through publication in semiprozines or fanzines or through other public display during the previous calendar year. Any person whose name appears on the final Hugo Awards ballot for a given year under the Professional Artist category shall not be eligible in the Fan Artist category for that year.
3.3.16: Additional Category. Not more than one special category may be created by the current Worldcon Committee with nomination and voting to be the same as for the permanent categories. The Worldcon Committee is not required to create any such category; such action by a Worldcon Committee should be under exceptional circumstances only; and the special category created by one Worldcon Committee shall not be binding on following Committees. Awards created under this paragraph shall be considered to be Hugo Awards.
