cytogenetics and provides examples of their applications, especially those
that are important in diagnostic and preventive medicine. The authors have each
worked in human cytogenetics for more than 40 years and have witnessed firsthand
the enormous strides made in the field during this time . The many advances
made since the third edition of this book reflect the rapidly growing application
of molecular biological techniques and concepts by human cytogeneticists.
Insertion of transposable elements, genomic imprinting, and expansion of trinucleotide
repeats are only a few of the important cytogenetic mechanisms that
have been discovered and shown to playa role in producing disease phenotypes.
Molecular cytogenetic methods have taken center stage in cancer studies with
the demonstration that cancers arise by chromosomal mechanisms such as gene
amplification, oncogene activation by chromosome rearrangement, ectopic
recombination leading to loss of heterozygosity, and multiple mechanisms
leading to genome destabilization.
We present a comprehensive and relatively brief overview of the principles of
cytogenetics, including the important new disease mechanisms previously men tioned.
Examples are chosen that illustrate these principles and their application,
thus preparing the reader to understand the new developments that constantly
appear in the laboratory, the clinic , and the current literature of this very active
field. At many points in the book, important unsolved problems in cytogenetics
are mentioned with suggestions of how a solution might be sought, which acts
as a stimulus to the reader to come up with his or her own suggestions . The
book should be particularly useful for physicians who want to keep up with new
developments in this field and students interested in a career in medical genetics
or genetic counseling. It could easily serve as a text for a one-semester college
or graduate-level course in human cytogenetics, or, with some supplementation,
a course in general cytogenetics.
In this edition , the text has been extensively reorganized and almost completely
rewritten to incorporate essential insights from cell and molecular genetics,
along with other advances in cytogenetics, and to present them in a
systematic way. Examples have been chosen that not only emphasize the underlying
principles but also illustrate the growing clinical importance of molecular
cytogenetics. Most of the tables and the majority of the figures are new, and virtually
all are based on studies of human chromosomes. We are grateful to the
colleagues and copyright holders who have generously permitted the use of their
published and unpublished figures and tables .

Both are linked to the perpetuation of the species and therefore have a closely linked biological function of crucial evolutionary importance. The newly developed ability to study the neural correlates of subjective mental states with brain imaging techniques has allowed neurobiologists to learn something about the neural bases of both romantic and maternal love. Both types of attachment activate regions specific to each, as well as overlapping regions in the brain's reward system that coincide with areas rich in oxytocin and vasopressin receptors. Both deactivate a common set of regions associated with negative emotions , social judgment and 'mentalizing' that is, the assessment of other people's intentions and emotions. Human attachment seems therefore to employ a push–pull mechanism that overcomes social distance by deactivating networks used for critical social assessment and negative emotions, while it bonds individuals through the involvement of the reward circuitry, explaining the power of love to motivate and exhilarate. Yet the biological study of love, and especially romantic love, must go beyond and look for biological insights that can be derived from studying the world literature of love, and thus bring the output of the humanities into its orbit.

‘Neuroreductionism’ is the tendency to reduce complex mental phenomena to brain states, confusing correlation for physical causation. In this paper, we illustrate the dangers of this popular neuro-fallacy, by looking at an example drawn from the media: a story about ‘hypoactive sexual desire disorder’ in women. We discuss the role of folk dualism in perpetuating such a confusion, and draw some conclusions about the role of ‘brain scans’ in our understanding of romantic love.

I lost my wife, Gail, to suicide several years ago. She was 33 when she took a deliberate overdose of pills. The emotional journey of the ensuing weeks, months, and years has been the most difficult of my life. But I survived and have learned from my experience. Most of all, I have rebuilt my life and found happiness again. Impossible as it may seem right now, you will survive this, too.
This book is not intended to be a complete guide for the suicide survivor—it only scratches the surface. There’s much more you can learn about coping with your unique grief than what is offered here. There are many wonderful books on the subject—some of which are listed inside— that I recommend heartily. However, I’ve written this book as a kind of “bite-sized” overview. It’s deliberately short and to the point to make the information inside more accessible. You may even find it useful to carry it around with you for awhile and refer to it during difficult moments.
This is also not a book about suicide prevention; there are many other publications that address that challenge.
This book is for you.
