"This article explores the little studied and partially unpublished literary corpus of Kalli... more "This article explores the little studied and partially unpublished literary corpus of Kallistos Angelikoudes, one of the most fascinating late Byzantine hesychast authors. It addresses some of the problems associated with the manuscript tradition of his writings and offers a new approach to the systematization of his oeuvre. Despite the uncertainty regarding the identification of the two groups of texts that make up the “books” of Angelikoudes’ literary corpus, that is, the Hesychastic Education and the Hesychastic Consolation, this article advances an argument with regard to the possible composition of these works. The article introduces into scholarly circulation the Greek text of the handwritten Life of Antho... more The article introduces into scholarly circulation the Greek text of the handwritten Life of Anthony of the Caves, which has recently come to the attention of researchers and is preserved in the archives of Athos hardly available until recently. For the first time, a critical edition of the Greek text of the Life is being published, the translation of which was carried out recently and published in the 2018 Kapterevskie Chteniya paper collection. We consider six known copies of a newly discovered monument of Greek Athos literature – the approximately thousand-page “Athoniad” by Jacob Neasketiotes, through which the Life has come down to us. The appendix to the article contains the first critical edition of the Greek text of the Life. The article also discusses the obvious sources of the Greek text, from the Tale of Bygone Years and the Kiev Caves Patericon to the Greek hagiographic collections of the 18th and the 19th centuries. The article deals with one of the oldest manuscripts containing a significant part of the theolog... more The article deals with one of the oldest manuscripts containing a significant part of the theological chapters of Kallistos Angelikoudes, one of the most important hesychast authors of the late Byzantine period. Codex Vatopedinus gr. 610 was written in the late 14th c. It contains a great amount of quotations excerpted from Patristic literature. In the second part of the codex, one can find the chapters of Kallistos Angelikoudes; these 92 chapters were retrieved from a greater collection containing now about 200 chapters. The article discusses the content of the Vatopedi manuscript, pointing out to the use of many Patristic fragments included there in different works by Kallistos Angelikoudes. This may shed light on the origin and purpose of the manuscript. A further study of the history of the text of these chapters allows us to assess the place of the Vatopedi codex in the manuscript tradition of Kallistos Angelikoudes’ literary legacy. The article examines the exegesis of Michael Psellos on the most mysterious of the "difficult pla... more The article examines the exegesis of Michael Psellos on the most mysterious of the "difficult places" of the Ladder by John of Sinai-Step XXVІІ/2.13. This interpretation is one of the so-called Theologica treatises (Theol. I.30). It differs significantly from the rest of the Byzantine explanations of this "difficult place". Michael Psellos decisively rejects the Christological interpretation of the "vision" and the questions of St. John. He also develops the doctrine of the accessibility to a human in present life of the vision of God in "symbols" and "forms" only. Higher contemplations are linked to the degree of detachment of the soul from the body. Unlike Michael Psellos, other interpreters, firstly, pay more attention to the context in which the chapter of the Ladder in question is located, secondly, they mostly prefer a Christological interpretation of St. John's questions to the unknown interlocutor, thirdly, they ask themselves who this interlocutor was, an angel or Christ Himself. One of the anonymous Byzantine commentaries convincingly defends the point of view according to which John Climacus talked with Christ. This paper analyses all the extensive interpretations of the difficult passage, and on the basis of the handwritten tradition, draws the conclusion that the exegesis of Michael Psellos had much circulation in Byzantium along with other conceptions of the mysterious chapter. In addition, there has been noted the reception of Psellos's interpretation in the first Slavic edition of the Ladder in 1647. Appendices I and II contain the edition of the Greek text of an anonymous Scholium and a fragment from the commentary by Elias of Crete respectively.

The article deals with the little studied and partially unpublished corpus of works composed by K... more The article deals with the little studied and partially unpublished corpus of works composed by Kallistos Angelikoudes, one of the most interesting authors of late Byzantine hesychasm. It addresses some of the problems associated with the manuscript tradition of Kallistos’ writings. Among other things, the article introduces the manuscript Vatop. 610 from Athos, which until now has been virtually unknown to scholars studying the manuscript tradition of Kallistos Angelikoudes. The article also offers a new approach to the systematization of Kallistos' works. In conclusion, it traces the origins of the unique text possibly composed at the end of the fourteenth century and known as the Canon of Compunction. The text is attributed in manuscripts to Makarios Kataphygiotes, believed to be one of Kallistos Angelikoudes’ disciples.

The article deals with the history of the Greek translation of the “Akathistos to our Sweetest Lo... more The article deals with the history of the Greek translation of the “Akathistos to our Sweetest Lord Jesus Christ”. This masterpiece of the late Church Slavonic hymnography has no Greek prototype and is almost unknown in the Greek Orthodox world. Nevertheless, it was translated into Greek at least twice during 18th and 19th and influenced the hymnographical work of Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain and hieromonk Isidoros of Samos. In 1996 the Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Boston prepared a new edition based on the two translations mentioned above as well as the original Church Slavonic text of the Akathistos (the editors consider the latter to be an old translation of the Greek hymn). An appendix to the article includes the fragments of all the versions and of the works of Nikodimos and Isidoros. It also includes the editio princeps of the “Note” to the hymnes written by Isidoros of Samos (in Greek).

The article argues that Paisy Velichkovskiy’s translation, which closely follows the Greek original, served as the source for the Moscow edition of the preface in 1793. The article analyzes the language of Paisy’s translation and its Moscow recension, and compares Paisy’s translating methods with those of his editors. Paisy Velichkovskiy’s translation of the preface to the Philokalia is published on the basis of a manuscript from
Neamţ monastery. This is the first publication of the translation.

The article deals with a little studied and partially published corpus of the Chapters composed b... more The article deals with a little studied and partially published corpus of the Chapters composed by Kallistos Angelikoudes, one of the most interesting and enigmatic authors of late Byzantium. The article attempts, for the first time, to trace the relationship between the three surviving collections of the Chapters and makes preliminary observations about the provenance of these three collections. The article also discusses the distinct features of the language of Kallistos, another topic which, so far, has been insufficiently studied. Finally, the article reviews the main themes of Chapters’ theology, attempting to locate them within the intellectual context of the middle and late fourteenth century, also known as the period of the Palamite controversy. The study pays special attention to Kallistos Angelikoudes’ teaching about God’s energies, as it appears in the Chapters, and its place among Palamite teaching of the time.
