The increasing crime rate and apparent reduction in combatting crime by law enforcement agencies ... more The increasing crime rate and apparent reduction in combatting crime by law enforcement agencies in Nigeria, particularly the Nigerian Police, deserve attention from a psychological point of view. This study examined the extent to which locus of control and emotional intelligence (EI) predict readiness to combat crime among police officers in Osun State Police Command, Nigeria. The study used primary data embedded in a descriptive survey design. A multistage sampling technique was adopted to obtain data from the sample population. Three police area commands in Osun State, namely Osogbo, Ile-Ife and Ilesa, were selected for the study. The sample comprised 258 police officers selected using a stratified random technique with different units of command as the basis of stratification. Three instruments, the Work Locus of Control Scale, Brief Emotional Intelligence Scale and Readiness to Combat Crime Scale were used. Data were analysed using descriptive (percentage count) and inferential statistics (linear regression and t-test). The results showed that locus of control did not significantly predict readiness to combat crime among police officers in Osun State Command [F(1,214) ¼ 0.371; p > 0.05], whereas EI [F(1,225) ¼ 131.045; p < 0.05] did. The study concluded that EI successfully predicted readiness to combat crime among police officers in Osun State Command, whereas locus of control had no influence.

It also investigated the extent to which role ambiguity predicted job burnout and determined whether there is a joint prediction of pay satisfaction and role ambiguity on job burnout. These were with a view to understanding the factors that predict job burnout among Osun State civil servants. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. Primary data were collected through the administration of questionnaire on a sample of the study population. The study adopted multi-stage sampling technique. Purposive sampling technique was used to select eight ministries and stratified sampling technique was used to select 354 respondents comprising 214 males and 140 females with mean age of 43.39 years and standard deviation of 9.09. Three standardized psychological instruments namely: Pay Satisfaction Questionnaire (PSQ), Role Ambiguity Scale and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) were used to collect the data for the study. The data generated was subjected to linear and multiple regression analyses. The results revealed that civil servants exhibited a moderate level of job burnout (44.70%). The results also showed that pay satisfaction significantly predicted job burnout among civil servants (β= 0.21, t = 3.53,P< .05). The results further revealed that role ambiguity significantly predicted job burnout among the respondents (β= 0.71, t = 8.37,P<.05). Finally, the results indicated that pay satisfaction and role ambiguity jointly predicted job burnout among civil servants (β= 28.13, t = 9.39,P< .05). The study concluded that job burnout was moderate among Osun State civil servants, while pay satisfaction and role ambiguity independently and jointly predicted job burnout among respondents.

The study, therefore, examined the extent to which leadership styles and personality traits independently and jointly predict job embeddedness of employees. This was with a view to determining factors that could predict job embeddedness among employees of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company. Primary data were used in this study. Data were collected from employees in four purposively selected regional offices. A multi-stage sampling technique was used in the study. Four regional offices of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company in Oyo, Ogun, Osun and Kwara States were purposively selected for the study. A proportionate stratified sampling technique was used to select respondents, which consisted of 261 participants (167 males and 94 females), using the classification of regional offices as the basis for stratification. The age of the participants ranged between 30 to 50 years, with the mean age of 43.27 years and standard deviation of 7.71. Three standardized psychological scales comprised of Leadership Style Scale (LSS), Big Five Personality Inventory (B-5PI) and Job Embeddedness Scale (JES) were used for data collection. Data collected were subjected to simple linear and multiple regression analyses. Results showed that both leadership styles and personality factor significantly and independently predicted job embeddedness among employees of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (R 2 = 0.24.9; p<.05) and (R 2 = 0.24.8; p<.05) respectively. The result also revealed that leadership style and personality factors significantly and jointly predicted job embeddedness among employee of Ibadan Electricity distribution Company, Nigeria (R 2 = 0.31; p<.05). The study concluded that both leadership styles and personality traits independently and jointly predicted job embeddedness among employees of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, Nigeria.

In actual fact, development depends on the mentor and mentoring practices. Many a time, successful individuals have had occasion to ride on the shoulder of highly influential personality to soar high on the ladder of success. Kaye and Jordan-Evans (2005) posit that often times, successful people say one of the most important keys to their success is having a mentor. In actual fact, it is hard to make it without a mentor and it takes too much time without a mentor. It is on this basis that it becomes expedient to bring to the fore the issues such as; what mentoring entails? It’s process, benefits and problems of mentoring. All these areas were explored with a view to providing answer/s to the question (Does Mentoring work?) raised as the topic for this paper.

The study employed descriptive survey design and a Multi-stage sampling technique was adopted. Purposive sampling technique was used to select six Federal Government establishments in Abuja and Lagos State. Using stratified random sampling, a total of 604 respondents comprising (58.9%) males and (41.1%) females were selected from these establishments. Data were collected through the administration of standardized psychological tests: General Perception of Downsizing (GPD), Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS), and Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ). Data collected were analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed a significant positive relationship between employee's perception of downsizing and their work commitment (r = 0.17; p< 0.05). That is, employee's perception of downsizing exercise influenced their commitment to work. The results also showed that employees' perception of downsizing was significantly related to psychosocial factors, i.e. Self-Concept (r = 0.25; p<0.01); and Length of Service (r = 0.11; p<0.01). Furthermore, the results showed that Self-Concept and Length of service significantly and independently mediated the relationship between employee's perception of downsizing and their commitment to work, (β = 0.36; t = 9.24; p<0.01); and (β = 0.14; t = 3.56; p<0.01) respectively. The study concluded that employees' perception of downsizing related to their commitment to work. This relationship was, however, mediated by employees' self-concept and length of service.
