The strengthening of existing structure is required in cases where the buildings are constructed according to the old regulations, and they do not fulfill any more the requirements of the recent regulations. Most of the buildings in India are normally constructed to resist static loads without considering seismic action. However, this leads to deficiencies in the design of the structures. In our case, one newly built 15 storey RCC framed building which have experienced a strong earthquake and during that time the seismic vibration of the building was much high which settled a fear among the tenants about the safety of the structure. After the earthquake the structure was carefully observed but no cracks or any sorts of damages to the frame members were found except the wall on which hair cracks were developed. But for the safety against the future earthquakes and most importantly safety of the structure, the building is to be retrofitted with Fluid Viscous Dampers. Here we will analyze the changes in the storey displacement, storey drift, modal period and frequencies, storey stiffness, critical column and beam forces before and after retrofitting the structure with the dampers using ETABS. This will help to provide extra safety precaution to the beam - column joints of the structures also.

They act as a single unit in which steel is effective on tension side and concrete is effective on compression side. In this paper, the proposed G+21 storey high-rise building frame is made of structural steel columns and steel beams with concrete slab composite floors. Stepped Architecture is one of the ideal concepts of construction to stabilize any framed structure. The bottom portion should be much wider than the top portion of the structure in this concept. This concept is very suitable for high-rise buildings in earthquake prone areas. We will discuss about composite construction and stepped architecture concepts in detail and will show how we can apply both of these concepts in high-rise building to work efficiently. Purpose of this paper is to design and analyze a two dimensional building frame under high seismic zone without providing any extra seismic resisting system.

The construction technology has advanced since the beginning from primitive construction technology to the present concept of modern house buildings along with the advent of latest computer software. The present construction methodology for buildings calls for the best aesthetic look, high quality and fast construction, cost effective and innovativeness. The manufacturing of structural members is done on customer requirements. Pre-engineered buildings can be adapted to suit a wide variety of structural applications and the greatest economy will be realized when utilizing standard details. An efficiently designed preengineered building can be lighter than the conventional steel buildings by up to 30%. Lighter weight equates to less steel and a potential price savings in structural framework. Steel hot rolled sections have been in use in construction since long in India. With advancement of technology to build moment resisting frames to resist frame actions, a review of the existing available sections is required to assess their applicability. PEB construction is 30 to 40% faster than masonry construction. PEB buildings provide good insulation effect and would be highly suitable for a tropical country like India. PEB is ideal for construction in remote and hilly areas as well as for metro cities. This paper covers in detail about the concept of Pre-Engineered Building, its construction system, benefits, applications and pictorial representation of various categories of buildings with the properties in single span and single ridge sloped PEB frame fabricated with wide flanged roll section with the wind design philosophy and investigates the available sections in light of the different code requirements for desired performance under strong wind conditions. The whole analysis and design procedure is done using computer software like Staad Pro v8i.

Effective promotion of green concrete incorporating FA is required in order to minimize the environment threat due to FA waste disposal and reduce cement consumption Due to day to day increasing population and scarcity of resources, countries like India faces numerous difficulties. In order to overcome this hurdle many ideas are implemented in different fields respectively. Since, India is a developing nation and huge amount of concrete is manufactured in order to fulfill the need. To overcome the need and avoid pollution caused due to manufacturing of raw material Green Concrete is used. It is a type of concrete similar to conventional concrete and its production and usage as compared to other concrete requires less amount of energy and resources which results in less harm to environment. Green Concrete is generally made from recycled waste materials like fly ash etc. With the use of Green Concrete many benefits are obtained. Green Concrete as made from recycled or reused products has chances of failure if not prepared properly. Production of Green Concrete is quite economically high. By overcoming the above demerits, it can be used potentially as environmentally friendly.

Earthquakes take a huge toll on life and property. Since the effect of seismic forces on structures is quite significant, it is important that the design of the structures must be done in the best possible way to take into account these effects and thereby aiming for an adequate structural response. In this discussion we will address in a concise way, two methods in the design of steel structures, which are linear analysis and second order effects (P-Δ). It is known that a nonlinear analysis is more accurate than a linear analysis, but on the other hand is an inefficient analysis in terms of time consuming with calculations and computer memory. So static P-delta analysis is considered here and compared with the linear response spectrum analysis of Strong Column Weak Beam (SCWB) and Weak Column Strong Beam (WCSB) steel frames.

Nowadays with the advancement of steel industry if we can make these type of buildings using square hollow sections/rectangular hollow sections, steel plated/ wooden floors and puffed panel walling systems then it will be more strong and low weighted also. These types of buildings are green, sustainable and eco-friendly. In this paper one model building has been analysed for seismic zone IV or wind speed 47 m/sec as per Indian Standard. Purpose of the building is residential or normal office type. It is found that wind forces developed in the structural members are greater than the seismic forces generated in the same. Because of low mass seismic forces are not generated despite of heavy ground acceleration. Proper steel bracing systems are provided vertically and horizontally for stability of the structure. The production of new structural hollow members, chequered plates, puffed/sandwiched panels have created a new era in building industry making it more sustainable in all respects.

The properties of the construction materials have also been stated in brief along with advantages and disadvantages of glass fiber concrete. In India, all old glass materials are considered as waste materials. It is disposed to the disposal ground just like other materials. The old glass materials can be recycled in factories. These recycled glass materials become an important ingredient for making GFRC. The primary aim of using glass fiber is to examine the strength of concrete made with glass fiber in comparison to plain concrete. The secondary aim is to examine the economy of GFRC for which an economic analysis could be made. Proper literature review has been done. The characteristics of glass fiber have considerable influence on the design, efficiency, output and particularly the reliability and durability of the glass fiber-based concrete. The glass fiber characteristics play a vital role in controlling the atmospheric pollution of concrete industries. All the materials with the specifications which I used for my experiments have been elaborately discussed. The apparatus and the instruments which were used for performing my experiment have also been mentioned. All the test results for all kind of specimens (cubes and beams) have been stated. The efficacy of the test results has also been discussed. Particulars in regards to design mix, especially its calculation have been furnished. Glass fiber reinforced concrete is considered to be a very useful item needed for the present concrete industries. The comparative cost of GFRC and conventional concrete has been stated here. It was found that the percentage of saving per cubic meter of fly ash-based glass fiber reinforced concrete is to the tune of 3% compared to conventional concrete. Glass fiber reinforced fly ash mixed green and sustainable concrete is a high strength high performance concrete as per our compression and flexural experiment results. The service life of GFRC is higher than that of traditional concrete and thus GFRC is widely used in architecture, building and other concerned engineering applications.

Eccentric bracing connections in steel structures help in stability of the structural systems against horizontal forces especially in seismic condition and also economize the connection. The EBF is usually assumed to be pin-ended, but the beam–column joints may be designed for pin-ended or for full connectivity. The EBF has several desirable features as a system for resisting seismic forces. The system can be designed for appropriate stiffness and drift control, comparable to that obtained using concentric bracing. The link beam is designed to yield in shear or flexure prior to initiation of buckling or yielding of the bracing member in compression or tension. In this chapter, the behavior of a 2-D steel frame is observed under seismic loading condition. The ductility and brittleness of the frames are compared with respect to time period of vibration and ratio of static base shear vs. dynamic base shear. The superiority of the EBF system is clearly visible than MRF and CBF system comparing the time period of vibration and base shear participation. The EBF system acts as metallic damper in the building fames.

Piezoelectric sensors and actuators are used in control. The electromechanical piezoelectric constitutive laws are adopted along with classical laminated plate theory. A solution for the stability of the column is derived using the geometric imperfection approach. A constant gain feedback control algorithm is derived using modified stiffness and increased Euler's critical buckling load during piezoelectric actuation. Control of a geometrically imperfect piezolaminated column subject to static, periodic and arbitrary loading in the axial direction is demonstrated in both frequency domain and time domain. A novel limiting actuation concept is developed based on the bending strains.

Seismic wave propagation through ground strata due to change in position of tectonic plates large... more Seismic wave propagation through ground strata due to change in position of tectonic plates largely influences the structural characteristics of sky-scraper by occurring huge vibration. Conventional methods i.e. - enhancing stiffness, strength, ductility and structural stability are used for a long time. Other typical methods i.e. - use of base isolation. Use of various damping devices and increase soil structure interaction are also performed in a large scale. For the analysis and design purpose a comparative study of all these methods is essentially enunciated in this article for the better understanding of structural concepts. For sky-scraper the fundamental time period (t) is essentially very high due to its larger mass (m) and flexibility with smaller stiffness (k). In this article base isolation is neglected due to this inherent structural property of a sky-scraper. Amongst various type of seismic dampers silicon viscous damper is implemented in the concrete column of the tall building as a shock absorber which dissipates the seismic energy proportional to the velocity of propagated wave. Shear walls are also provided to the sky-scraper in different arrangement to get an evidence of the tall building to withstand against seismic hazard. Seismic data are taken from the San Fernando earthquake in February 9, 1971 at Ventura Boulevard, 1st floor, loss Angeles, and California. This synopsis will clarify the conception of structural stability and use of various methods for prohibiting the structural damage of sky-scraper due to the loading of ground acceleration and earthquake vibration.

One of the important aspect of design of tall buildings / frames is to ensure its lateral stability taking care of maximum drift stipulation. This paper includes guidelines stipulated in various codes [such as UBC–Vol. 3 (1997), IS: 800(2007), IS: 1893 (2002 Part-1), etc.] to restrict the P-Delta effect. According to the recent trends for economic limit state design, it is necessary to carry out the nonlinear dynamic analysis in seismic condition for highly ductile material. This also helps to avail advantage of high strength within elastic range. As steel is more ductile than reinforced concrete, geometric non-linearity including stress softening P-Delta effect is an important factor in the design of tall slender steel structures. This also ensures suitability of steel intensive construction including steel-concrete composite construction over the conventional RCC framed construction. Also it requires high end softwares such as STAAD Pro, SAP, ETABS etc. for computation purpose. In the present case STAAD software has been used.

It is a homogeneous material also. The member section and the structural system can be made very efficient for economical design. As the steel is recyclable and reused, it is a green material. The embodied energy for the efficiently designed steel structure is less than the RC structure. For sustainable green building steel is the best material nowadays. Moreover, pre-engineered and prefabricated faster construction methodologies help the development work to complete within the stipulated time. In this paper, the usefulness of Eccentric Bracing Frame (EBF) in steel structure over Moment Resisting Frame (MRF) and Concentric Bracing Frame (CBF) is shown.

Stability of the steel structures against horizontal forces especially in seismic condition is efficiently possible by Eccentric bracing systems with economic connection details. The EBF is pin-ended, but the beam-column joints are designed for pin ended or for full connectivity. The EBF has several desirable features for seismic resistance. In comparison with CBF system, EBF system can be designed for appropriate stiffness and drift control. The link beam is supposed to yield in shear or flexure before initiation of yielding or buckling of the bracing member in tension or compression. The behavior of a 2-D steel frame is observed under seismic loading condition in the present paper. Ductility and brittleness of the frames are compared with respect to time period of vibration and dynamic base shear. It is observed that the EBF system is better than MRF system comparing the time period of vibration and base shear participation.

An energy based electromechanical piezoelectric constitutive law derived by Tiersten is adopted. For large deformation analysis of beams a counterpart of Von Karman's plate equation is considered. The displacement fields in finite element method are based on the first order shear deformation theory. To analyze the nonlinear equilibrium equations an incremental iterative technique based on the Newton-Raphson method is employed. In the present algorithm the equilibrium is examined considering the electromechanical coupling effects. Nonlinear effects due to transverse and axial loading on a cantilever and a pinned-pinned PVDF bimorph beam have been investigated.
