| | I'm a huge fan of Eames/Fischer, but it is unfortunately a rather small ship. So I finally got around to writing up a manifesto (image heavy!) to explain what I love about the pair and hopefully provide some inspiration to potential fans. So if you've ever looked at a fic or a graphic and thought, "Huh, why Eames/Fischer?" (or are thinking that now) I hope you'll take a look!Tags:eames, graphics, movie discussion, robert fischer jr.Mood:chipperchipper (If this isn't allowed, mods, please delete and apologies.)Because I am a music/film geek and will be a composition student as of next year, I spend some of my spare time analysing film scores and trying to figure out what goes where, and how the composer's done certain scenes. When it came to Inception, however, the plot and the music are a lot more intertwined and complex than in some films (such as Burton's Alice or Prisoner of Azkaban, where what the music's doing and why is very obvious). I've come to the fandom because while I can pester my music friends for their thoughts on the intricacies of the actual music, the finer points of characterisation/plot are not their area of expertise. I'm mulling over a few things, but my biggest question at the moment is whether the emotional centre of the film is Cobb and Mal as a combined unit, or whether it's Cobb's internal struggle, which would encompass the former. Further ramblings of mine can be found HERE at my journal. Any comments/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. <3Tags:dom cobb, mal, movie discussion, music, original soundtrack Inception's amazing costumes and their talented designer Jeffrey Kurland, received only one nomination for "Best costumes"; this was from the Costume Designer Guild, in their contemporary film category. At the award ceremony on the 22nd of February, Kurland lost to Amy Westcott of Black Swan.I said in my meta on the costumes that I wasn't surprised that Kurland had been overlooked by the various award bodies, despite truly being worthy of recognition. His work was masterful but subtle, with details that were easy to miss when watching the film in a theatre. Nevertheless, I'd held out hope that the Costume Designer Guild would honour him with this award. In my opinion, one shared by several others I've discussed this with, he deserved it over Westcott. Kurland had this to say in the winter issue of The Costume Designer:Key inspiration? The script and its author/director Christopher Nolan. He is a consummate filmmaker. The script was a mind-expanding experience with characters changing on different planes of existence. The challenges were endless. The story and its inhabitants were always paramount. Favorite costume? Impossible to choose. I would rather speak of the joy and privilege of working with colleagues like cinematographer Wally Pfister and production designer Guy Dyas. It was an amalgam of art, reality and pure imagination. Comments? My particular work process was respected, embraced and folded into the making of the film. The experience was extraordinary, one that I will cherish forever.Lindy Hemming continues her work as costume designer on the Batman trilogy in Nolan's next film The Dark Knight Rises. Kurland is responsible for the costumes in the upcoming Captain America movie. Considering the way Nolan likes to work with the same pool of talent, hopefully we'll see them collaborate again.Tags:articles, christopher nolan, movie discussionMood:disappointeddisappointed In appreciation of the amazing costumes of Inception and because they've only been nominated for one award (the Costume Designer Guild's contemporary film category), I have put together some dial-up killing meta that examines the work Jeffrey Kurland and co. put into the main characters' looks and what the costumes reveal about the characters. It is here at my personal journal.Tags:movie discussion At the Art Directors Guild Awards on Saturday, Guy Hendrix Dyas won in the fantasy category for his work on Inception. Also nominated were Alice in Wonderland, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I, and Tron: Legacy. The King's Speech, which is nominated along side Inception for the Academy Award for Best Art Direction, also won, but in the guild's period category. Black Swan won the contemporary category. -sourceTags:movie discussion I know that in the film, the team travels with the PASIV on the plane because it's Saito's. The team implied, however, that they are not used to having private planes. In the script, Arthur outlines what they would need to do if it were even possible to fly privately:On a 747 the pilots are up above, first class is in the nose sonobody walks through the cabin. We'd have to buyout the wholecabin, and the first class flightattendant- I would think it's safe to assume that being accommodated by Saito's money & resources is a rarity. That being said, how do they travel with the PASIV normally? They wouldn't be able to get through airport security and they certainly couldn't smuggle the device on the plane. Would they force clients to somehow get to them? Would they spend a ton of time driving, taking trains/buses, etc.?Thoughts?Tags:movie discussion Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but if it was I couldn't find the post. What do you think Yusuf's backstory is? Heck, what's his nationality? 1. Dileep Rao: is an American of Indian descent. Trained as a stage actor and always seems to play smart, understatedly badass supporting characters in movies. He doesn't tell people his age.2. Yusuf: * Accent! He definitely has a non-American accent in the movie, different from Dileep's natural accent. I'm not very good with accents. British? Indian? Actually, he doesn't sound Indian to me, but most of the Indians I know have lived in the U.S. for years and their accents when they speak English are more based on their local languages than on Indian English. * Then there's his name, which could be his real one or an alias. Yusuf is an Arabic name. If it is an alias, it would be a bad one for Kenya, which is majority Christian and not Arabic-speaking. It would be a perfectly inconspicuous name in West or North Africa or the Middle East. If it's his born name, his parents might be Muslims of Indian or Pakistani descent, but that doesn't tell us where he's from. In my personal experience, people who emigrate from India usually still give their children Indian first names, like Dileep has (vs. say Chinese immigrants to the U.S. who almost always have an English first name as well as maybe a Chinese one; but that may just be because Americans suck at pronouncing Chinese). So he could have grown up anywhere, really.* Cultural clues! Stop me if I'm full of crap here, but Yusuf doesn't read Indian to me in his body language or way of speaking. To make a huge generalization, Indian workplace culture is much more non-confrontational, hierarchical, personal (you ALWAYS say hello and ask how people are), and soft-spoken than Europe or the U.S., and Yusuf really doesn't show any of this in his interaction with the team. On the other hand, if he's spent a few years as an expat, he's probably naturally blended in to the norms where he is. I know very little about Kenya, so maybe someone who is from there or has spent time there can say whether they think he's from there or has been there for a long time?I'm also curious about everyone's personal theories and fanon around Yusuf's character. How did he get into mixing illegal dream drugs? Does he have formal education in pharmacology? Why is he living in Mombasa? Are he and Eames personal friends, or just colleagues? How old is he?Tags:movie discussion, yusuf Previous 10 EntriesTop of Page | |
