The objective of this study was to investigate the morphology and morphometry of the coccyx on pelvic magnetic resonance imaging in asymptomatic individuals among Turkish adults. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted retrospectively on the pelvic magnetic resonance images of 456 adult patients without a history of trauma in the coccyx region. The coccygeal vertebrae count, number of bone segments, and intercoccygeal and sacrococcygeal joint fusions were determined from the sagittal plane images. In addition, the length and angles (the sacrococcygeal angle, intercoccygeal joint angle, and sacrococcygeal joint angle) were measured. Statistical Analysis Used: Data were analyzed using the T-test or Mann-Whitney U-test, the ANOVA, or Kruskal-Wallis tests, and the chi-square test was used for the categorical variables. Results: The coccyx is formed by four, five, or three vertebrae in a decreasing ratio. The coccyx is composed of one to five bone segments; one bone segment was found in 2.8% of the cases. Intercoccygeal joint fusions been observed predominantly in the last intercoccygeal joint, with or without sacrococcygeal joint fusion. The coccyx was found to be longer in adult males than in adult females. The sacrococcygeal angle might be anteverted or retroverted. Conclusion: The findings are contrary to the conventional knowledge in that the vertebrae shaping the coccyx were completely fused and consisting of a single bone in very few cases. Better understanding of the anatomical variation of the coccyx may be useful for clinicians evaluating patients presenting with conditions in the coccygeal region.

Objective: In the present study, central region morphometry of a child brain in mid-sagittal MR images was analyzed in age and gender groups. Materials and Methods: Different points determined previously, commissura posterior (PC) and the distances between cerebral cortex point (VCS) vertical to commissura anterior-commissura posterior line, sulcus centralis (CS), sulcus marginalis (MS), and the angle (α) between CS-PC-MS were determined and measured together with difference of gender in three different age groups (aged 6-9, 10-13, and 14-17). Results: Central region measures of the brains of boys aged 6-17 are higher than girls except for MS-PC distance. While VCS-PC, CS-PC, and MS-PC measures display a significant difference in the girls aged 14-17 when compared to the other age groups of 6-9 and 10-13 (P < 0.05), angle α is not significantly different in age and gender groups (P > 0.05). However, while VCS-PC, CS-PC and MS-PC distances show a significant increase in girls beginning from the age of 14, this increase is limited in boys. Conclusion: Morphometric differences observed in different age groups in boys and girls shall contribute our evaluation of the alterations in brain development in both of genders and shall be useful in preparation of surgical operation plans to be applied to the central region.

Therefore, they are commonly used in the field of forensic sciences, physical anthropology and anatomy. In addition, femur morphometry is helpful in finding sex or side (left or right) differences. The femur also shows characteristics of certain populations. Femur length is important for calculation of individual stature. In this study, the artificial neural network method was used to estimate femur length. In total, 230 femora exemplar were used. The three input parameters of the method were the distance between trochanter major top point and trochanter minor bottom point, the diameter of caput femoris and the diameter of collum femoris. By using these parameters, the artificial neural network estimation on femur length was performed. The results show that the method is capable of performing this estimation. In addition, sex discrimination was performed and achieved with 82% accuracy. As well as the identification of sex or side differences, morphometry of the proximal femur is necessary and important for surgical procedures.

For the entire knee joint to perform its task painlessly and functionally, the positions and strength of the muscles, the strength of the ligaments, and their reaction to movement must be compatible. The Insall–Salvati (Ins-Sal) index is useful for showing changes in patellar height produced by repositioning the tibial plateau, in other words, showing changes in patellar tendon length. Patella height is an important value to be taken into account in knee prosthesis surgery, tibial osteotomy, and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The morphometric relationship between the reference measurements of the distal femur and proximal tibia and the position of the patella will be useful in determining the natural anatomy. In this study, we aimed to determine th...

Especially the feedback of students insights and suggestions is a good guidance for management of medical training. In this context, in the present study, it has been aimed to determine the thoughts and recommendations of 5th-grade Medical Faculty Students about Clinical Anatomy Course (CAC) by using a questionnaire which is consist of 12 questions. Method: A hundred and forty-four student (81 female and 63 male) volunteered to participate the study and took the questionary. Results: While 86.8 % of the students mentioned that it would be more necessary to take Clinical Anatomy Course during Orthopedics Course, 87.5 % of the student showed their preference for Neurosurgery Course. 75.7 % of the students suggested that it would also be beneficial to add CAC into the Eye Diseases and Otorhinolaryngology Practise in addition to those practices mentioned above. While the allotted time for CAC in the Clinical Practice was found sufficient to only 39.6 % of the student, 31.9 % asked for an increase in duration of CAC. According to 71.5 % of the students, the information should be solidified after the theoretical lectures by practices in which bones, manikins, and cadavers are used effectively. Giving attendance is not favored by 50 % of the students, and almost same amount of the participants (51.4 %) thinks the exam at the end of the class or the course is unnecessary. Conclusions: It has been understood from the positive feedback of the students that CAC which is currently taken during Orthopedics and Neurosurgery Courses facilitates the understanding Clinical Practise topics and it increases the overall success of the students in Clinic. While preparing the medical training curriculum, adding the CAC into the clinical training curriculums when needed may help to increase the overall quality of the medical education.

Pterion is classified in 4 types as follows: sphenoparietal, frontotemporal, epipteric and stellate. The pterion represents: anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery, middle cerebral artery, Broca's motor speech area, insula and stem of the lateral cerebral sulcus. This pterion junction has been used as a common extra-cranial landmark for surgeons in microsurgical and surgical approaches pertaining to important pathologies of this region. In the present study, our aim was to determine pterion types, to estimate distances between pterion and some special landmarks by which means to contribute to the related literature by comparing the data with other studies focusing on various populations. Pterion types identified by observation and measurements were taken by steel Vernier caliper. This study was conducted with 75 adult skulls (both sides 150 pterion). Skulls were classified with regard to gender as: 47 male and 28 female. Pterion types observed in both genders were classified as: sphenoparietal type 82% (84.04% in male, 78.57% in female), frontotemporal type 4.66% (5.31% in male, 3.57% in female), epipteric type 10.66% (8.51% in male, 14.28% in female) and stellate type 2.66% (2.12% in male, 3.57% in female). These findings will be usefull for clinicians, anthropologists and forensics.

Folia morphologica, 2011

Clinical symptoms caused by the elongated styloid process (SP) or calcified stylohyoid ligament w... more Clinical symptoms caused by the elongated styloid process (SP) or calcified stylohyoid ligament were first described by W. Eagle and they are now known as Eagle syndrome (ES). Normal length of SP was stated by Eagle as 2.5 cm. The objective of this study was to determine and discuss the length of SP and medial angulation degree with computed tomography (CT), which is an affective modality in the identification of ES, and a comparison with related studies. Three-dimensional (3D) images obtained from the axial CT scans of 22 cases (11 males and 11 females) aged between 24 and 80 years, who referred to Cumhuriyet University Hospital, Department of Radiology for multi slice CT with the pre-diagnosis of ES, were used. Lengths of the SP and medial angulations were measured on the obtained images. Inter- and intra-group comparisons were carried out using Wilcoxan and Mann-Whitney U tests. The mean length of the SP was found as 4.1 ± 1.1 cm. When inter- and intra-group lengths of the right ...
