Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The study adopted the Grounded theory as the theoretical framework to guide the study. The sample for the study were twenty-two (22) sellers of the home-made medicinal beverages, due to the itinerant nature of the business, the purposive-snowball sampling techniques was adopted. Data collected were used to analyse some recent trends in drug dependence situation in Nigeria. Among other things, findings suggested that the consumption of the Home-made beverages was reported to be dependent on the clients’ demand rather than on any standardized diagnosis of clients’ ailment. It also demonstrated the potential
dangers in the sale of the medicinal beverages, leading to potential safety concerns, uncontrolled (unregulated) practices amongst others. The efforts of established government regulatory bodies such as NDLEA (National Drug Law Enforcement Agency)
and NAFDAC (National Food Law Administration and Control) seem to focus more on orthodox medicines, to the neglect of the activities of the sellers of Home-made medicinal beverages, this constitutes a significant threat to the health of the citizenry. It was concluded that future researches should focus on better understanding the regulation of these products and exploring potential strategies for improving safety.

The effect of physical attractiveness and gender on job placement was investigated in this study.... more The effect of physical attractiveness and gender on job placement was investigated in this study. Sixty-four (64) participants were randomly selected from four commercial banks (Zenith Bank, United Bank of Africa, Bank PHB. and Ecobank) in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State. The age range of the participants was between 25 – 55 years. The study was an -experimental study that used a confederate’s picture, and thereafter a job placement scale was administered to the participants. The design used was a 2 x 2 factorial design; the independent variables of the study are physical attractiveness (attractive vs non-attractive) and gender (male vs female). The statistical analysis used was a 2 – Way Analysis of Variance for unequal sample size. The first hypothesis, which predicted a statistically significant effect of physical attractiveness on job placement was significant, thus the researchers accepted the hypothesis. The second hypothesis which stated a statistically significant effect of gender was also significant, thus the researchers also accepted the hypothesis. The third hypothesis states which “there will be a statistically significant influence of physical attractiveness and sex of applicant on job placement” was not confirmed. The results were put in the context of previous studies. The researchers recommended amongst others that; managers in banking institutions and specifically human resource managers in organizations should use physical attractiveness and the gender of employees when placing employees positively, it was also suggested that some other job related variables such as tenure and experience should be considered and be given priority in future research on job placement. Keywords: personnel, gender, selection, recruitment, attractiveness

One hundred and seventy –five (175) participants were randomly selected from a population of remedial students in the University of Uyo. In this study dwelling place had two levels (rural vs urban) while self – efficacy also had two levels (high vs low). The design used was a 2 x 2 factorial design, while a 2- Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for unequal sample size using the harmonic mean was used to analyse the data obtained in this study. Results showed that there was no statistically significant difference between rural and urban participants. However, there was a statistically significant difference between the participants who had high and low self- efficacy F(1,171)= 9.02, p< 0.05. Results were discussed in context relating to theories and previous findings on career decision making. The findings of the present study, point to the need to educate the masses on the steps to m...

This study investigated the influence of psychoactive substance (alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine)... more This study investigated the influence of psychoactive substance (alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine) intake and gender on crime. Three hundred and eighty participants (380) were randomly selected from inmates as models of prisons in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The participants comprised 314 males (82.63%) and 66 females (17.37%) with the mean age of 28.3 years. The design of the study was a survey. In this study four hypotheses were predicted. The first hypothesis indicates that there was a statistically significant influence of alcohol intake on crime committed among prisoners, X 2 (df=4, N = 380) = 29.51, p<0.01. The result of the second hypothesis indicates that there was also a significant influence of marijuana intake on crimes committed among prisoners, X 2 (4, N = 380) = 38.1, p<0.01. Hypothesis three indicates that Cocaine intake does not significantly influence crime committed among prisoners, X 2 (4, N = 380) = 12.32, ns. While the result of hypothesis four indicates there was no significant difference in crimes committed among male and female prisoners, X 2 (2, N = 380) = 0.12, ns. The findings of the present study were discussed in the context of previous studies. The policy implications of the findings in this study were also discussed.

Although the issue of juvenile delinquency is an age long problem, it seems that the juvenile delinquency of the past cannot be compared with that of the present era. The antisocial behaviours often associated with the juvenile delinquents' include vandalism, drug abuse, weapon carrying, alcohol abuse, rape, examination malpractices, school violence, bullying, cultism, truancy, school drop-outs, to mention but a few. Obviously, unless something is done to roll back the wave of juvenile delinquency, the prospect of a better, safer and more prosperous society emerging in Nigeria will remain elusive. The family is the foundation of human society.

Generally, whether in the domain of work or society at large, when a significant number possess creative ability it brings about transformational change in the personal professionalism and overall national development. Obviously, creativity research has been with us for some decades, but distinctively, in the western world researchers and practitioners have devoted increased attention towards the understanding of the factors predicting creative performance. An extensive review of creativity research in Nigeria revealed a substantial gap and inconsistencies in methodological approaches among scholars. Moreover, the Nigerian orientation to creativity research is out of tune with current conceptualizations and trends in creativity research. A research agenda assumed to overcome the shortcoming of earlier studies is prop...

This review tested the various forms of abuse against the postulations of the different theories of abuse and declaration of the Child’s Right Bill and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), with the intent to uncover the underlying characteristics of Child abuse. On this basis, child abuse was identified as the sequence of physical, sexual and complex, chronic experiences of maltreatment. The author identified the dimensions of Child abuse to include: physical injury; sexual maltreatment; emotional maltreatment; deprivation of necessities and child trafficking. The analysis of child abuse reveals the emotional intensity of parent - child interaction and the psychological, social and economic well being of both parent and the child. The paper concludes that modern society would have failed if the child’s socialization were not given the serious attention that it deserves by creating an enabling family environment/background. The paper recommends comprehensive measures/strategies to solve this endemic problem that would guarantee the development of a sound mental health of the child to function successfully within the family system and the society at large.

One hundred and twenty participants between 18 to 45 years with a mean age of 31.5 years responded to the HIV/AIDS vulnerability scale and provided information on their alcohol use pattern. Twenty six or (22%) reported their alcohol consumption level as “high” and 94 or (78%) reported “low” alcohol consumption, 83 or (69%) were single and 37 or (31%) were married. An independent t – test was used for the statistical analysis of the data. The first findings revealed that alcohol consumption was strongly associated with vulnerability to HIV/AIDS,[t(118) =3.05, p< 0.05]. The findings also revealed that gender have influence on vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, [t(118) = 2.39, p< 0.05]. However, marital status of the participants did not influence vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. In spite of the limitations of this study, it is significant in shedding some light on the role played by the variab...

The colossal corruptions have resulted in the loss of the capacity to function. The structure of the Nigerian nation, as it is presently structured cannot evolve or at best maintain a sustainable development, unless we evolve a new order. The survival of Nigeria as an entity given the worsening/deplorable socio-political crisis depends, to a large extent, on the capacity of all citizens as stakeholders to evolve the Nigerian value system. The value-system must be agreed, accepted, and binding on all, devoid of any form of prebendalisation in our attempt to combating the depredation of corruption and be free from the usual false piety paid to issue(s) that have threatened our chequered national history. The authors in this paper presented a psychological analysis to explain the incidence and persistenc...

Eighty (80) Senior Secondary II students made up of 40 males and 40 females were randomly selected from the population of a Secondary Commercial School in Uyo. These students solved mathematics problems under four conditions: cooperatively, non cooperatively, competitively and non competitively. The results of the ANOVA showed that there was a statistically significant difference in performance between cooperative and non – cooperative learning strategy groups (F (1, 76) = 71. 92, P < 0. 01) with the cooperative group performing better. There was no statistically significant difference in performance between competitive and non-competitive learning strategy groups, (F (1, 76) = 0.0073, N.S.). There was no significant interaction effect of cooperation and competition. The practical implications of the results and suggestions for further research were pointed out.
