Obolo native speakers are found in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States of Nigeria. Being a descriptive study, the presented data are drawn from the intuitive knowledge of the author and corroborated by other native speakers of Obolo. Nominal modifiers in Obolo with certain restrictions can occur only at pre-head or post-head and some at both positions in relation to the nominal it qualifies. The paper identifies adjectives, determiners, quantifiers, associative constructions, demonstratives, intensifiers, emphasizers and the relative clause as sub-classes of Obolo nominal modifiers. The data analysis reveals that Obolo modifiers are predominantly post-modifiers.

The paper is mainly descriptive. The data for this research were collected elicited from a purposive sampling of ten competent native speakers of z n through personal observation of their use of the Tarakiri dialect and interview. This study shows the inflectional forms of the z n language through the morphological processes of affixation and cliticization. Number, gender and case are described in nominal inflection. This paper contributes to knowledge through a documentation of the forms and functions of z n nouns.

The main aim of this paper is to highlight the economic features of language even in creativity. The significance of the study lies in the appreciation of the aesthetics of language. Premised in functionalism with a bias on Zipf's 'Principle of Least Effort' in the linguistic economy, the study amplifies the features of language condensed in the economy of words creatively articulated in taglines. Twenty commercial taglines are selected for this study. The examination of the taglines affirms the feature of language which shows that a speaker selects language items optimally in discourse for a desired communicative effect.

In fact, it is the most affected because it is a global language. The globalised nature of the English language has given rise to several varieties of English now called Englishes of the world. The aim of this paper is to study the lexico-syntactic structures in NE, KenE and BRE as well as identify the differences and similarities of these three varieties of English. The paper makes use of the Contrastive Analysis Theory (CAT) in its theoretical framework while the descriptive method was adopted as its methodology. The paper used Bursegeya's (2009) Kenyan English and Jowitt's (1999) Nigerian English Usage as its sources of data. The paper concluded that NE and KenE have some similarities and differences in their lexis and grammar. The paper observed that there were no major shifts in their syntactic structures with BRE. These differences and similarities are attributed to fact that the speakers of these two varieties (NE and KenE) have different language experience with BRE.

The paper is based on Vygotsky's socio-cultural theory of zone of proximal development which proves that there is a possibility for improvement between a learner's actual performance and potential performance through external assistance. The paper shows the result of a classroom-centred research. Thirteen low-achieving students are provided with remedial language instruction an hour after school for six weeks. An obligatory analysis of the students' composition test is carried out to find out the students' response to the remedial language instruction provided. Projecting the result of the analysis from the standpoint of the socio-cultural theory, it is revealed that given a favourable learning environment in remedial setting, low-achieving students in collaboration with their language teachers can increase their proficiency in the use of the English language.

This study aims to show that children with communication disorders can be provided remedial language instruction through the response to intervention framework. This study is hinged on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. The population for this study consists of pupils in primary three. The study sample is drawn from six primary schools in three local government areas of Rivers State in Nigeria. Data for this study were collected through a language test. Pupils were asked to write a composition test on ‘Myself’. The essence was to identify pupils with dysgraphia which could mean at-risk pupils in
mainstream schools. The data collected from the pupils was subjected to qualitative and quantitative analysis. The discussion of findings shows that there are some pupils who are already at risk and would need the response to intervention framework if they are not to turn out as low achieving students in the nearest future. The study recommends remedial
language instruction for timely intervention through a termly dynamic assessment of pupils in primary schools in Rivers State.

There is a constant flow of discourse when man is ac ve and inac ve (McCarthy et al 2002:55). Some mes, this flow of discourse is channeled through music which may be for relaxa on and/or entertainment. This flow however is different from speech and wri ng because it is accompanied by organized pleasant sounds. These sounds are organized in rhymes and rhythm. Yet, in this form, language is the raw material of music as it is used by ar stes for expression. As a tool of expression, music is used in religious rites, relaxa on and entertainment. The social reali es of a culture have bearings on the language of musicians as they use language to communicate to the society. In this regard, this paper will analyze the language style of some selected Nigerian musicians. A descrip ve framework is adopted for this study. Data for this study are got through a careful selec on of lyrics that depict code switching, code mixing, slang, pidgin, hyponyms and euphemisms.

Obolo speakers are found in Akwa Ibom State and Rivers State of Nigeria. In Obolo derivational morphology, noun compounds are highly generative. This is possible through the use of semantic domains for the creation of new words. This study describes Obolo nouns through Lieber's Lexical Semantic Framework. The one-thousand-sevenhundred SIL Comparative African Wordlist is used as the instrument for data collection. The semantic domains which reflect the features of the lexemes that constitute noun compounds in Obolo make these nouns to have predictable and compositional meaning. Semantic domains like personalizers, number, progenitives and associatives make for semantic transparency. The semantic transparency also allows the possibility of the creation of word terminology in science, technology and language pedagogy.

The frequent poor performance of students in English Language means that language teachers need to reconsider the appropriateness of the teaching methods. In view of the fact that there are students with learning disabilities in mainstream schools, this paper highlights some motivational strategies that can enhance the communicative competence of students with learning disabilities. The paper explains in details these motivational strategies and the benefits. Finally, the paper concludes by calling on language teachers to adopt an eclectic method in language teaching through the use of the pedagogical strategies examined. It is hoped that these motivational strategies would be adopted for corrective and remedial instruction in language teaching.

However, errors must be properly treated. The treatment of error is possible through corrective feedback. In view of the fact that present day language teaching is geared towards communicative competence, this paper aims to show how students respond to corrective feedback. A writing task is administered to a class of forty seven students. A pretest is given after an instructional lesson. Two weeks later, a post test is given based on the language items provided in corrective feedback. The post test shows the response of the students to corrective feedback. Consequently, the paper discusses factors that might have caused poor response of the students after corrective feedback. Students' record shows classroom practices or interaction between teachers and students as it relates to the implementation of the national policy on education. Students and teachers in public secondary school constitute the population of this study. Data for the study was got through content analysis of 30 English language notes from 30 students in five secondary schools in Rivers State. Structured interview was also used to elicit data from 15 English language teachers and 72 students in public secondary schools to corroborate the students' record. Simple frequency and percentage are used for data analysis. Based on the findings, the paper reveals amongst others that students' lacks as a result of the quality of language instruction is majorly responsible for students' proneness to examination malpractices and mass failure in English language in NECO and WAEC. The paper recommends the provision of an optimal learning environment for language learning as well as the use of a good supervisory technique to ensure instructional quality in language arts in public schools in Rivers State.
