Document similarity is basic for Information Retrieval. Cross Lingual (CL) similarity is importan... more Document similarity is basic for Information Retrieval. Cross Lingual (CL) similarity is important for many data processing tasks such as CL palgiarism detection and retrieval and document quality assessment. We study CL similarity based on the Explicit Semantic Association (ESA) adapted to a cross lingual setting with focus on Arabic. We compare the degree to which CL similarity testing performs where one of the language is Arabic with its monolingual counterpart for various text chunk sizes. We describe the used infrastructure and report on some of the testing results, study the possible sources of encountered weaknesses and point to the possible directions for improvement.

Digital content has been increasing rapidly. This content can be generated, accessed and used by ... more Digital content has been increasing rapidly. This content can be generated, accessed and used by anyone and thus the need for quality assessment of web content before usage becomes an important issue. Devising methods to assess quality of Arabic digital content is the focus of this paper. Our work was partially based on Wikipedia articles annotated into featured and good according to quality guidelines of the Wikipedia. Our analysis was directed at finding features that can serve as best quality indicators. Using the defined features we trained a high accuracy quality assessment model using machine-learning algorithms. Our work went beyond the Wikipedia documents to build a general model that can assess the quality of Arabic documents that lack Wikipedia metadata with acceptable accuracy. The model was trained and built using features from documents we collected from Arabic online news sites and blogs, and annotated in collaboration with university students.

The challenge in supramolecular catalysis is to harness productive interactions between functiona... more The challenge in supramolecular catalysis is to harness productive interactions between functional groups within the supramolecular structure to produce a system with selectivity and catalytic properties not encountered at the level of the building blocks. We create supramolecular systems based on a rotaxane framework, where the wheel of the rotaxane is decorated with catalytically active peptide dendritic branches. The regulated motion of the wheel and axle structure, which has blocking groups on its ends to keep the wheel froIIl dethreading, leads to an effective convergent positioning of the catalytic groups around a rigid substrate binding pocket. The synthesized dendritic peptide is formed by the catalytic amino acid triad composed of serine, histidine and aspartate, with a building block as the branching unit. The synthesis and the assembly of the system are presented in this thesis, as weIl as the preliminary kinetic results on the dendritic peptide.

Rabbits were immunized with common antigen (CA) derived from Salmonella typhimurium . Animals wit... more Rabbits were immunized with common antigen (CA) derived from Salmonella typhimurium . Animals with CA hemagglutinin titers of 1-320 to 1-81,920 were injected with 10 7 viable Proteus mirabilis via the retrograde and hematogenous routes. Nonimmune control groups were challenged similarly. From the retrogradely challenged groups sacrificed at 4 weeks, pyelonephritis was found in 89% of the control animals but not in those immunized. Bacteriuria was present in 89% of the controls but in only 61% of the immunized group. Hematogenously challenged, immune animals sacrificed at 6 weeks did not show histological evidence of renal pathology, and only 6% had bacteriuria. Eighty-six per cent of the nonimmune controls showed both pyelonephritis and bacteriuria. The protective effect is specific because of the following. (i) Active and passive CA immunization did not prevent pyelonephritis due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa which does not produce this antigen. (ii) Passive immunization with a CA anti...

It is in this optic that the Algerian government creates Funds earmarked for a renewable energy supplied from 0.5% of petroleum rental. While solar energy remains the main focus of efforts to boost production from renewable energy, Algeria is looking at wind power by several projects, which will be integrated in the Algerian network. The main objective of this research work is to investigate the power quality issue to the transient stability problem caused by the wind power connection and consequently the enhancement of the rate of the wind power penetration limit without overloaded line and with an acceptable voltage level ensured by integration of flexible Ac transmission system (FACTS) device such as Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM). Furthermore, in order to choose the adequate type of wind turbine, a comparative study between several types is established. It must be noted that all simulations are carried out on PSAT/Simulink. Finally, some meaningful conclusions and comments are given in this paper.
