Objective: Chemotherapy is associated with increased incidence of hypertension and heart failure.... more Objective: Chemotherapy is associated with increased incidence of hypertension and heart failure. We assessed the contribution of pre-existent cardiovascular risk to severity of cardiotoxicity in breast cancer. Design and method: The study was prospective and included 72 female breast cancer patients on trastuzumab therapy with: 1) left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF)> 50% at inclusion, 2) no history of myocardial infarction 3) no identified cause of LVEF decrease besides chemotherapy. Blood pressure and lipids, waist circumference and body mass index were determined in all patients. Cardiovascular risk was calculated by applying the SCORE risk chart with HDL, for high-risk populations. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria. Cardiotoxicity was diagnosed by decrease of LVEF, according to the Seidman criteria recommended by the 2012 ESMO guidelines. Endothelial vasodilator dysfunction assessed by brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) an... more Endothelial vasodilator dysfunction assessed by brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) and carotid intima-media thickening (IMT) are two indicators of subclinical atherosclerotic disease. The aim of the study was to observe if there is a relationship between FMD and IMT in a group of hypertensive patients. We measured FMD and IMT by ultrasound in 75 subjects aged between 42 and 62 years. We examined their correlation and interaction with traditionally cardiovascular risk factors. Endothelial function was assessed by means of flow mediated dilation (FMD) on brachial artery, using B-mode ultrasonography. The mean value of FMD was 8.00 +/- 2.02%. We observed a moderate but significant correlation between FMD and total cholesterol (r = -0.511, p < 0.01) and between FMD and triglycerides (r = -0.325, p < 0.01). Alterations in the methylation patterns of promoter CpG islands have been associated with the transcriptional inhibition of genes in many human cancers, including PCa. Objective: The aim of our study was to analyse the diagnostic value of aberrant promoter hypermethylation of gene glutathione S-transferase P1(GSTP1) in serum DNA to discriminate between prostate cancer (PCa) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients by minimally invasive methods. The purpose of this study was to develop the tools and the methodology for a systematic analysis ... more The purpose of this study was to develop the tools and the methodology for a systematic analysis of usefulness of adding sonic representation of data, supplementary to visualization. This paper is mainly dedicated various temporal lenses, including the newly developed lenses with variable magnification, proposed as a tool for a better perception of short events combined with a compression of irrelevant intervals. Sonification procedures are also briefly presented. The programs were tested using various cardiac signals: ECG and heart rate HR both in humans and in rats (experimental data). The results, represented by the sound files, were uploaded in an accessible library, which contains both sonic and visual representation of the signals.

Three types of sonic display were tested, based on combinations of saccadic sounds, different intensities and different pitch. The results indicate a clear preference towards a display marking each of the four zones by a specific pitch.

Material and methods: Buccal swab or blood samples (100 from Crete and 300 from Northern Greece) were extracted and typed by using the Promega PowerPlex 16 ® kit. Results: Frequencies at each locus were calculated using an Excel worksheet. At the TH01 locus, the most frequent allele in Crete was 9.3 (0.265), while the most frequent allele in Northern Greece was 6 (0.252). At the PENTA D locus, the most frequent allele in Crete was 13 (0.194), while the most frequent allele in Northern Greece was 11 (0.348). Similarly, at the FGA locus, allele 22 (0.184) was the most frequent in Crete and allele 21 (0.190) the most frequent in Northern Greece. A statistically significant difference was found in the frequency of allele 16 (D16S539) between the two different populations (p = 0.043). Estimations of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for each population separately were conducted and no deviations were detected (p > 0.05). Discussion: The 15 loci examined offer a highly discriminating system for use in paternity and forensic casework. No significant differences between the two different Greek populations were observed in the frequency of the different alleles, with the exception of allele 16 (D16S539).

Stress, anxiety, and post-surgical chest pain are common problems among patients with thoracic su... more Stress, anxiety, and post-surgical chest pain are common problems among patients with thoracic surgical pathology. The way in which psychological distress is managed—the coping style—can influence the postsurgical evolution and quality of life of patients. In our study, we monitored the influence of coping style on patients’ anxiety and the intensity of post-operative chest pain. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 90 subjects with thoracic surgical pathology. One month after their surgeries, patients completed the following scales and questionnaires, translated, adapted, and validated for the Romanian population: COPE scale inventory, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 Questionnaire, McGill Pain Questionnaire, and Numeric Pain Rating Scale. Background and aim: Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), as utilized by European citizen... more Background and aim: Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), as utilized by European citizens, represents a variety of different medical systems and therapies based on the knowledge, skills and practices derived from theories, philosophies and experiences used to maintain and improve health, as well as to prevent, diagnose, relieve or treat physical and mental illnesses. The purpose of the present paper was to apply a modified version of the Wahner-Roedler questionnaire and to evaluate differences in CAM use by family medicine physicians in Romania and Hungary. Material and method: The study included 117 Romanian and 107 Hungarian physicians, in order to compare the CAM therapies used. The data was collected from seven CAM practices in Romania and from eleven CAM practices in Hungary. All physicians completed the revised Wahner-Roedler questionnaire once, in their personal country’s language. We used the above-mentioned questionnaire having the permission of the authors of Wahner-Roedler DL et al study. Because praying for health is considered to be a very used CAM therapy in Romania and Hungary, we introduced it in the second section of the questionnaire. Results: The percentage of physicians who talk with their patients regarding possible benefits of using CAM therapies was significantly increased in Hungary as compared to Romania (14% vs 1.7%, p=0.002). The modified Wahner-Roedler Questionnaire indicated that Chiropractic, Osteopathy, Homeopathy, Phytotherapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Yoga are the most important methods with limited familiarity for Romanian comparative to Hungarian physicians. The percentage of Hungarian physicians that understand proposed medicinal use and feel comfortable counseling patients regarding Bowen therapy is significantly increased comparative to Romanian physicians (25.2% vs 9.4%, p=0.002). The analysis revealed that Chiropractic is less familiar for Romanian than Hungarian physicians, and for those who understand it, is less comfortable (p=0.024). 24.8% of Romanian physicians understand proposed medicinal use of Aromatherapy, but feel uncomfortable counseling patients as compared to 13.1% of Hungarian physicians (p=0.027). A higher percentage of Romanian physicians have limited familiarity in using Homeopathy, as compared to Hungarian physicians (45.3% vs 23.4%, p<0.001). 40.2% of Hungarian physicians understand proposed medicinal use of Osteopathy and feel comfortable counseling patients versus 24.8% Romanian physicians (p=0.014). Conclusions: The tendency to refer a patient to a CAM practitioner for treatment documented significant differences, being extremely likely in Hungarian physicians as compared to Romanian physicians.

Materials and Methods: This developed ex vivo procedure comprises the following phases: (i) scanning the area of interest for surgery; (ii) obtaining a 3D virtual model of this area using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT); (iii) obtaining a 3D-printed model (based on the virtual one), on which (iv) the dental practitioner simulates/rehearses ex vivo (most of) the surgery protocol; (v) assess with a new CBCT the 3D model after simulation. It also adds important knowledge of growth and development to human biology. The aim of our study was to investigate the applicability of Demirjian method for estimation of dental age in Romanian children and if the tables developed for French Canadian population are not applicable, to develop new equation and tables for our boys and girls. Our survey was conducted on a final sample of 441 radiographs of patients aged between 5.5 and 14.5 years (218 girls and 223 boys). Patients with MPC had significantly higher CTC levels [m: 18.5 (1-126)] compared with the other two groups (P < 0.001). A significant positive correlation was demonstrated (P < 0.001) between CTC levels and all tumour burden markers: PSA (Rho = 0.55), T (Tau = 0.47), N (m N1: 18.5, m N0: 0.0) and M ( Tau = 0.54) except Gleason score(Tau = 0.16). The overall survival to 6, 12 and 18 months was 80 %, 69 % and 62 % respectively. The progression-free survival to 6, 12 and 18 months was 76 %, 46 % and 33 % respectively. A cut-off level ≥ 4 CTC (S: 90 %; E: 87.6 %) was chosen to distinguish patients with an unfavorable prognosis. These patients had a significantly shorter median overall and progression-free survival (P < 0.001). As the CTC levels were increasing, the overall survival and progression-free survival decreased. The risk of mortality and progression for the patients with ≥ 4 CTC was 4.1 (IC 95 %: 1.1-14.6; P = 0.029) and 8.5 (IC 95 %: 2.6-26.9; P < 0.001) times higher. Using a multivariate piecewise Cox regression mode, the level of ≥ 4 CTC was an independent predictor of PSA relapse (HR: 5,9; IC 95 %: 1,(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)4; p <0,005). Conclusions: The immunomagnetic analysis allows us to quantify the CTC in peripheral blood and could provide a possibility for correctly staging and to estimate the prognostic value of the metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer with the purpose of the early onset of new therapies.

It also adds important knowledge of growth and development to human biology. The aim of our study was to investigate the applicability of Demirjian method for estimation of dental age in Romanian children and if the tables developed for French Canadian population are not applicable, to develop new equation and tables for our boys and girls. Our survey was conducted on a final sample of 441 radiographs of patients aged between 5.5 and 14.5 years (218 girls and 223 boys). The sample was divided in groups, considering an age interval of one year. All dental pantomograms were scored by two examiners and intra and inter examiner calibration was made. Patients with MPC had significantly higher CTC levels [m: 18.5 (1-126)] compared with the other two groups (P < 0.001). A significant positive correlation was demonstrated (P < 0.001) between CTC levels and all tumour burden markers: PSA (Rho = 0.55), T (Tau = 0.47), N (m N1: 18.5, m N0: 0.0) and M ( Tau = 0.54) except Gleason score(Tau = 0.16). The overall survival to 6, 12 and 18 months was 80 %, 69 % and 62 % respectively. The progression-free survival to 6, 12 and 18 months was 76 %, 46 % and 33 % respectively. A cut-off level ≥ 4 CTC (S: 90 %; E: 87.6 %) was chosen to distinguish patients with an unfavorable prognosis. These patients had a significantly shorter median overall and progression-free survival (P < 0.001). As the CTC levels were increasing, the overall survival and progression-free survival decreased. The risk of mortality and progression for the patients with ≥ 4 CTC was 4.1 (IC 95 %: 1.1-14.6; P = 0.029) and 8.5 (IC 95 %: 2.6-26.9; P < 0.001) times higher. Using a multivariate piecewise Cox regression mode, the level of ≥ 4 CTC was an independent predictor of PSA relapse (HR: 5,9; IC 95 %: 1,(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)4; p <0,005). Conclusions: The immunomagnetic analysis allows us to quantify the CTC in peripheral blood and could provide a possibility for correctly staging and to estimate the prognostic value of the metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer with the purpose of the early onset of new therapies.

The relationship between the serum levels of Vitamin D and the severity of RA is a subject of great interest for the future therapeutic strategies. Although the evidence on the relationship between hypovitaminosis D and early RA is contradictory, preliminary data suggest that the serum levels of vitamin D are inversely associated with the disease activity. Aim: the main objectives of this study include: (1) to analyze the serum levels of vitamin D in patients with RA in comparison to healthy controls; (2) to investigatea possible correlation with disease activity.
