However, the versatile nature of the oral environment entails additional properties in the suture materials to assure uneventful healing. A surgeon needs to understand these delicate intricacies in the immediate postoperative phase and needs some kind of algorithm in the selection of sutures that suits the different surgical scenarios. Therefore, a study was designed to observe the effect of four different types of mouthwash, viz. Avohex, Aloedent, Parodontax and Betadine, on the mechanical properties of Vicryl (polyglactin 910), PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), Prolene (polypropylene) and Mersilk. Methods: A total of 288 suture samples were divided in four equal groups (72 = each group) and used for the experiments. Tensile load, tensile strength as well as percentage elongation of the suture materials were evaluated in the various stated media at 3rd, 7th, 10th and 14th days, which were compared...

Healthcare students and workers are expected to develop significant levels of stress as compared to the general population. The significance of this study is to assess the depression, anxiety and stress faced by the healthcare students that may lead to unfavourable effects on learning and their overall psychological health. Methods: This assessment was done by means of an anonymous, online, closed-ended questionnaire. DASS-21 scale was the primary instrument used for this purpose. The responses were recorded on a 4-point Likert scale. Results: The study had more male students, majority were between 21 and 23 years of age, asymptomatic and almost equal proportion of students from the fraternity of dentistry, medicine, pharmacy and nursing. Dental and pharmacy students were associated with lower stress than medical students whereas nursing students experienced higher anxiety as compared to medical students. Close contact with confirmed COVID-19 cases experienced higher stress and anxiety. Daily patient exposure was associated with significantly higher stress anxiety and depression. Conclusion: Based on the observations of the present study, a support program for psychological training for these health care students should be introduced.

The caregivers play a vital role in administering daily oral care to residents in rehabilitation centers: The aim of the present questionnaire-based study was to evaluate the caregivers’ knowledge, attitude and practices towards oral healthcare at centers for the intellectually disabled in the Southern region of Saudi Arabia (SA). The present study was designed as a cross-sectional one-point time survey. The samples were selected by using a non-probability convenience sampling method. The self-administered closed-ended questionnaire comprised of 22 items divided into four sections, which was designed to elicit the demographic information, awareness of oral care, attitude towards oral health and practice of the oral healthcare regime among the participants. Of the164 participants, 53.0% and 47.0% were male and female, respectively. Most of t...

Appropriate selection of suture materials is a crucial step in oral, maxillofacial and periodontal surgery for uneventful healing. We have scarcity of comprehensive studies comparing mechanical properties of commonly used suture material in oral surgery. The present in vitro study sought to evaluate the effect of saliva on the strength, elongation and stiffness of the commonly used suture material over a period of two weeks. Methods. Three suture materials, silk (SL), polyglactin 910 (PG) and polypropylene (PP), were used in 4?0 gauge. A total of 120 suture samples (40 from each material) were used for the investigation. Artificial saliva was mixed with human serum in 1:1 ratio and maintained at pH of 7.4 to 8.1 to simulate oral environment. All samples were tested at pre-immersion (baseline), as well as on the 3rd, 7th and 14th day in the post-immersion period. A universal testing machine was used to test the selected mechanical properties. The collected data were s...

Patients with OKC are often asymptomatic but may present with pain, swelling, or discharge. Despite the aggressive nature, previous literature as early as 1970s reported the fact that parakeratinized OKC can be treated by means of marsupialization alone. Patients concerns: The patient had reported with a complaint of pain and swelling in relation with a tooth in mandibular right quadrant. Diagnosis: This case report discusses features of a rare, extensive, panmandibular OKC that is only second of its kind mentioned in the literature. Intervention: As a usual treatment protocol, marsupialization was attempted first. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed reduced expression of Ki-67 and B cell lymphoma 2 (bcl-2) markers after marsupialization from 2 separate sites. However, due to incomplete resolution in the lower righ...

It offers a new option to supplement existing treatment regimens for reconstruction/regeneration of the oral and craniofacial complex, which includes the teeth, periodontium, bones, soft tissues (oral mucosa, conjunctiva, skin), salivary glands, and the temporomandibular joint (bone and cartilage), as well as blood vessels, muscles, tendons, and nerves. Tissue engineering is based on harvesting the stem cells which are having potential to form an organ. Harvested cells are then transferred into scaffolds that are manufactured in a laboratory to resemble the structure of the desired tissue to be replaced. This article reviews the principles of tissue engineering and its various applications in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Generally, these tumours in jaw bones are found as solitary lesions. Occurrence of these tumours as Multiple Ossifying Fibromas (MOF) in jaw bones is very rare. The studies reported till now have found an association between MOF and Hyperparathyroid Jaw Tumour Syndrome (HPT-JT). HPT-JT is always associated with the genetic mutation in tumour suppressor gene HRPT2 which encodes protein parafibromin. The simultaneous presentation of ossifying fibroma and other features of HPT-JT may or may not be present. Thus, the expression of parafibromin needs to be evaluated in MOF to rule out it's association with HPT-JT. The present case of 24 years old female patient, showed bilateral maxillary Psammomatoid Juvenile Ossifying Fibroma (PsJOF). The patient was further investigated for association with HPT-JT. Other finding such as blood serum calcium and parathyroid assay were normal. A negative expression of parafibromin in the tumour tissue suggested an association with HPT-JT. Thus, evaluation of parafibromin can help in accurate diagnosis and treatment of MOF of jaws.
