This paper offers a narrative synthesis of emerging evidence on technology-based education to understand the current experiences of learners, teachers and families. Studies find that few students in low-and middle-income countries have access to technology-supported learning with the most marginalised children appearing to have the least educational opportunities. As such, the education response to COVID-19 could widen existing inequalities.

As a response to interruption of education due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this study is a collaborative reaction that narrates the overall view, reflections from the K-12 and higher educational landscape, lessons learned and suggestions from a total of 31 countries across the world with a representation of 62,7% of the whole world population. In addition to the value of each case by country, the synthesis of this research suggests that the current practices can be defined as emergency remote education and this practice is different from planned practices such as distance education, online learning or other derivations. We are indebted to the extraordinary and talented Lana Radomsky, Student Assistant in Open Education at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, for her hard work, diligence, and attention to detail in helping bring this project to fruition. We are also grateful to the Rebus Community for enthusiastically providing a home for this volume. Finally and most especially, we are grateful to all forty-three contributors for their support of this project and for granting us the privilege of republishing and amplifying their work. Their voices are courageous and a powerful testament to the importance of centering the margins. May this work continue.
