This study portrays the learning of EFL writing in online classrooms by delving into different modes that the teacher used. This study is carried out by employing a qualitative approach. The data were collected by using students' reflective journals and semi-structured interviews. The participants of the study were 35 students of the twelfth grade and one English teacher. As the data from the students' journal and the interview were categorized into broader themes, the teaching and learning activity was compatible with modes of online classrooms in Modes 1 and 2 which were low bandwidth-low immediacy and low bandwidth-high immediacy. This denotes low bandwidth as the preferred mode used by the teacher, presumably due to the technical access and supports. Thus, English teachers can implement interesting media for teaching and learning depending on the availability of the learning sources by sticking to the availability of online learning modes. For the students, students can ask the teacher if they encounter difficulties in online classrooms.

Conclusion This study examines language anxiety, particularly language anxiety in speaking performance. The investigation of language anxiety in speaking performance deals with four research problems whose aims are (1) to portray the extent to which learners in urban and rural secondary schools experience language anxiety in speaking performance, (2) to explore why learners experience language anxiety in speaking performance in English classrooms, (3) to recognize how the learners cope with their anxiety about speaking performance in English classrooms, and (4) to find out whether school origins and learners' language anxiety are related to their speaking performance in English classrooms. The findings of each of these research problems have been presented in Chapter 4. Concerning the first research problem, it has been depicted in chapter 4 that the extent to which learners experience language anxiety is divided into three parts of discussion, comprising overall, urban, and rural learners' anxiety levels. Overall, most of the learners are in the normal level, meaning that they are neither relaxed nor anxious. This level of anxiety is also prevalent in the overall anxiety level seen from three anxiety components. Among the learners in the urban and rural school, their average scores is also in the normal level of anxiety, but some of the components and its sub-areas are in the anxious levels. Among the urban learners, the components from the highest to the lowest are fear of negative evaluation, communication apprehension and test anxiety, and the three highest sub-areas are peer pressure, teaching styles and activities, and receiver anxiety. Meanwhile, the rural learners score the highest averages of communication apprehension component followed by fear of negative evaluation and test anxiety component as the lowest average, and of peer pressure sub-area followed by communication with others and teaching styles and activities sub-area. In regard to the reasons for their language anxiety, it is found that four factors bring about language anxiety in speaking performance among the learners,

With a huge interest in international publication among Indonesians, many go for a publication in academic journals that have a standard style of native English language. Thus, the lexical patterns of a manuscript must meet the criteria to make publication possible, otherwise the manuscript is not likely to be published. To capture this, 60 abstracts (from 30 Indonesian and 30 English-native authors) were chosen and taken from several international journals as the corpus of this study. Based on Halliday’s SFL model, the abstracts were qualitatively analyzed for their Textual meanings. The results indicate that themes of the abstracts are specifically manifested in the native abstracts that are distinguishable from the abstracts written by Indonesians. The findings of this study can yield benefits for teachers, stude...

Educational institutions all over the country in primary, secondary, and tertiary levels urge teachers to teach from home. While online learning is mandatory during this pandemic, its implementation in the fields is more varied and heterogenous among practitioners. In addition to it, from the perspective of students, online learning for more than half of a semester is new and results in challenges for them. Besides, to learn grammar is still deemed difficult by most EFL learners. Not only do students have to adapt to innovative ways of learning grammar, but they are also required to learn a terrifying ordeal of taking the subject. Hence, this study is intended to examine students' attitude towards synchronous and asynchronous learning of grammar. To collect the data of their attitude, a survey design was administered to 7 classes by adapting Tang & Chaw's (2013) questionnaire. The results show that the students' attitude towards asynchronous and synchronous learning can be seen from six aspects comprising learning flexibility, technology use, learning readiness, study management, online interaction, and online practices. To conclude, synchronous and asynchronous learning can be implemented with respect to students' inclination and the nature of courses being learnt.

Previous studies compared the relationship between learners’ language anxiety from distinct residential areas, but the comparing anxietycoping strategies is limited. Thus, this study aims to portray coping strategies experienced by EFL learners in urban and rural areas. Data was collected through an interview and questionnaire. The results showed that distinct anxiety-coping strategies such as preparation, relaxation, positive thinking and so on were employed by learners. However, the resignation strategy was rarely used. Consequently, it is suggested that English teachers allow students a silent period before they start to be confident enough to speak in English as forcing them to speak could cause anxiety leading to students’ disappointment about their own performance.
