Functioning of the parts manufactured in above mentioned industries is linked with the quality of the machined slots. This paper is aimed at investigating the quality of end milled slots taking into account different input process parameters whereas Titanium Nitride coated tools are employed for end milling operation. Quality of end milled slots is measured in terms of surface roughness and diameter error. Taguchi orthogonal array is used as the experimental design which resulted in better quality of end milled slots.

Hole making operations constitute a majority of the operations in dies and molds industry. EDM utilizes an electrode for its principle requirements for the erosion of work piece materials. This research paper is aimed to find the effects of different types of electrode materials namely Copper, Graphite and Tungsten Carbide on the quality of blind holes generated during the operation. The quality of blind holes is evaluated in term of surface roughness, diameter error and axial error. Graphite as an electrode is found to be the most suitable for most of performance characteristics.

Research paper thumbnail of Performance optimization of electrical discharge machining (die sinker) for al-6061 via taguchi approach

The effect of eight parameters namely discharge current, pulse on-time, pulse off-time, auxiliary current, working time, jump time distance, servo speed and work piece hardness are investigated. Taguchi's orthogonal array L18 is employed herein for experimentation. ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) with F-ratio criterion at 95% confidence level is used for identification of significant parameters whereas SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) is used for determination of optimum levels. Optimization obtained for Al-6061 with parametric combination investigated herein is validated by the confirmation run.

Research paper thumbnail of Parametric optimization for surface roughness, kerf and MRR in wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) using Taguchi design of experiment

This paper reports the effect and optimization of eight control factors on material removal rate ... more This paper reports the effect and optimization of eight control factors on material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness and kerf in wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) process for tool steel D2. The experimentation is performed under different cutting conditions of wire feed velocity, dielectric pressure, pulse on-time, pulse off-time, open voltage, wire tension and servo voltage by varying the material thickness. Taguchi's L18 orthogonal array is employed for experimental design. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and signal-to noise (S/N) ratio are used as statistical analyses to identify the significant control factors and to achieve optimum levels respectively. Additionally, linear regression and additive models are developed for surface roughness, kerf and material removal rate (MRR). Results of the confirmatory experiments are found to be in good agreement with those predicted. It has been found that pulse on-time is the most significant factor affecting the surface roughness, kerf and material removal rate.
